My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 149
Chapter 149 An Inexplicable Fear
“Yu? Yu, what happened?” When Rong Jian saw Mu Yu squatting on the floor, covering her ears while screaming in fear, he panicked and bent down to lift her up. Right when he touched her shoulder, she immediately shoved his hand away and shouted for him to stay away from her.
Her unexpected emotional turmoil confused Rong Jian, who frantically took a few steps back and called out to her. However, she ignored her and cowered on the floor. He decided to call Qin Jinhuan straight away.
After he called Qin Jinhuan, he turned to Mu Yu, who had now stopped screaming and was sitting on a stone railing near a lawn, looking pale and dazed.
“Yu?” Rong Jian attempted to approach her.
“Yes?”
“Are you okay?” He sighed in relief upon hearing her response. Mu Yu lifted her head and fixed her gaze at him for a while before slowly shaking her head.
“Just now…” Rong Jian stopped himself when he realized that it was not the right time to be asking questions. He took a bottle of mineral water and opened it for her. “Yu, have some water.”
Mu Yu took the bottle handed to her and wiped away her sweat. She heaved a few long sighs and thanked him. Sensing that her mood had stabilized, he finally gathered the courage to ask her with concern, “Yu, what happened to you just now?”
Looking apologetic, she flashed a smile at him. “I must have scared you just now.”
“Not really. I was just taken aback. Yu, you…”
“Do you believe me if I told you that I had no idea what happened as well and that I felt the fear out of nowhere?”
“I believe you, Yu. But what were you scared of?” Rong Jian asked her while he took a glance at Kiki’s barefaced photograph, trying to get an answer out of it.
Mu Yu shook her head and her gaze accidentally fell on the photo again, which caused her to tremble and reflexively look away. Once again, she buried her head in her arms and hugged her knees. Rong Jian frantically apologized, “Yu, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked you. I…”
Mu Yu drew out a hand and waved at him. “Keep quiet. I am thinking.”
“Okay.” Rong Jian remained silent as he worriedly watched her. A long pause later, she still had not opened her mouth. He glanced at his watch and sat down beside her to flip through the papers in his hands.
“Chief Rong.”
“Yu.” He immediately put away the papers and focused on her. She looked slightly better than before and was not drenched in cold sweat anymore, which made him sigh secretly in relief.
“Was Kiki an actress before?”
“Huh, an actress?” Rong Jian shook his head in astonishment. “I’ve never heard her mention it. Why did you ask that all of a sudden?”
Mu Yu frowned as she stared at the stack of papers in his hands; the photo of Kiki was nowhere to be seen now. “Chief Rong, when I saw her photo, a horror scene instantly flashed across my mind, and I couldn’t stop myself from screaming. I suspect that she might have acted in some horror films.”
“Acted in horror films? Are you sure?” Rong Jian’s exaggerated expression made her feel embarrassed. “It’s just a guess. Other than that, I could not think of a possibility that made me recall the horror scene when I saw her photo. Chief Rong, do you want to call Kiki to check with her?”
Since Rong Jian felt that this clue had nothing to do with the murder case, he hesitated but did not reject her request. He made a call to Kiki and chatted with her in a roundabout manner before subtly asked her the question. After he received a confirmation from Kiki, he ended the call and shook his head at Mu Yu. “Kiki said that she had never acted in any films; not even in video clips.”
“Oh.” Mu Yu appeared disappointed and muttered to herself with some doubt, “Why would I feel that way after looking at her photo? Was it because she resembled an actress in a horror film?”
Hearing that, Rong Jian gave it some thought before replying to her, “Could you describe the horror scene that appeared in your mind just now? Let’s see if we can identify the film. After all, I have watched a lot of horror films.”
Mu Yu shook her head. “I tried to recall the scene just now, but I could not retrieve any specific details. I was simply paralyzed by fear—the type of fear that gripped your soul.” Although she tried her best to suppress her feelings, her body trembled a little when she talked about the scene.
“Hmm. Tell me what horror films you have watched.”
“There are too many.” Mu Yu looked upset. “When I first got into college, in order to overcome my timid personality, I watched horror films when I had the time. After a year, I almost finished watching all the horror films available online.”
“That’s alright. If so, you shouldn’t keep thinking about it. I was asking for fun. It has nothing to do with our case anyway.” Rong Jian was reluctant to add to her stress.
“Why do you think that it has nothing to do with the case?”
“Um… Based on my hunch? Alright now, Yu. Don’t overthink. Do you want to rest in the car? Huan will pick you up soon.”
Mu Yu sat up in shock. “What? You called him? Who asked you to call him?”
Rong Jian was taken aback by her huge reaction as he scratched his head and apologized, “Well… I saw your condition just now and I was worried that…”
“Huh? Tsk!”
“Yu, I’m sorry.”
“My bad.” Mu Yu realized that she was quite hostile to him and hurriedly softened her stance. She did not forget to remind him that he should consult her before calling Qin Jinhuan in the future.
“Okay.” Although Rong Jian agreed to it, he had other plans in mind. Had he not called Qin Jinhuan, he would have to shoulder the responsibility if anything happened to Mu Yu. He would be skinned alive by Qin Jinhuan.
“Is he coming from his company?” Mu Yu asked while checking her watch.
“It seems so.”
“Well, he should be arriving soon. Chief Rong, aren’t you in a hurry to reach Huacheng? You should leave now. Don’t worry about me.”
“It’s a few minutes’ wait anyway. I’ll leave after Huan arrives.”
“The case is more important. You don’t have to wait for him.”
“That’s fine.” Now that she was back to normal, Rong Jian who had been thinking about Wang Linhua made a call to Liu Xiaofan and gave the latter a few reminders.
Mu Yu sensed that he was not leaving. Knowing that he would only leave after Qin Jinhuan arrived, she did not push him further. Her gaze fell on the stack of paper on the lawn with Kiki’s photo in it. After some hesitation, she attempted to pick up the paper. However, the moment her hands touched them, her head throbbed in pain and her hand felt like it was pricked, which caused her to recoil immediately.
She gently hit her head in frustration and sat down again beside the lawn. Hands beneath her chin, she shut her eyes to recall the memory that flashed through her mind the moment she saw Kiki’s photo.
Alas, the memory was long lost like a kite that snapped off from its string. No matter how hard she tried, she could not pinpoint the important details. What remained were some blurry montages and an inexplicable fear.
Why am I in fear? What’s the trigger in my mind? What’s the connection between Kiki and me?
When Mu Yu was deep in thought, her hands were suddenly gripped by someone, causing her to jump up in shock. “Who is that? F*ck…”
“Yu, how are you feeling?”
“Huan?”
“Yes, it’s me. How are you feeling? Any discomfort? Is it serious? I’ll send you to the hospital.” Qin Jinhuan bombarded her with questions while he scanned her from head to toe.
“I’m fine. I’m really fine. I just felt a little dizzy just now. I’m totally okay now. You don’t have to send me to the hospital.” In order to assure him, Mu Yu explained herself over and over again as she tried to calm herself down. The shock from his sudden grip just now was comparable to the fear that she experienced from looking at Kiki’s photo.
“Are you really fine?”
“Yes, I am really fine. Do I look like a person who doesn’t care about her health?”
Seeing that she had the mood to joke around with him, Qin Jinhuan looked at her again to check that she was doing fine, after which he pulled her into his embrace and rebuked Rong Jian, “Is this how you take care of my wife?”
Rong Jian raised both hands and smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry. It’s my…”
“Huan!” Mu Yu hurriedly tugged at Qin Jinhuan’s shirt. “It has nothing to do with Chief Rong. It was me…”
“How was that unrelated to him?” Qin Jinhuan interrupted in a solemn tone. “He brought you out so he has to take responsibility for you! He has to make sure that not one inch of your skin is harmed. If not, I’ll…”
“Why are you yelling at me?” His loud voice made her feel wronged.
“I wasn’t yelling at you. I was teaching him a lesson.” Qin Jinhuan immediately softened at the sight of her, but when he mentioned Rong Jian, he gave the latter a sharp look. Rong Jian kept rubbing his hands and smiled nervously to express apology.
“Huan, Chief Rong had nothing to do with it! It’s all my fault.”
“You don’t have to cover for him. He won’t take revenge on you.”
“It’s not a matter of revenge. This really had nothing to do with Chief Rong.”
“Alright, alright. I’ll listen to you. Okay, let’s not argue over this. I’m bringing you home.” When Qin Jinhuan looked at Mu Yu, his body softened as if melting into a puddle.
“Yu, have a good rest at home.” Rong Jian hurried over and enthusiastically opened the car door for them before Bian Zijun had the chance to step up.
“Get lost.” Qin Jinhuan’s hostility upset Rong Jian and made Mu Yu unhappy. “Qin Jinhuan! I’ll be angry if you continue to treat Chief Rong in that manner.”
“I was referring to myself when I said get lost…” Qin Jinhuan smiled at her as he escorted her into the car. Mu Yu ignored him and reminded Rong Jian through the car window, “Chief Rong, you should hurry to Huacheng. Remember to update me when you have news.”
“Huh. Alright, I will. Yu, have a good rest. Tomorrow…”
The rest of his sentence was inaudible because Qin Jinhuan had ordered Bian Zijun to drive off as he rolled up the car window. When Mu Yu saw that Rong Jian was still waving at them after some distance, she hurriedly turned to wave back at him through the rear window. She then confronted Qin Jinhuan in frustration, “Why did you treat Chief Rong in that manner? Are you planning to sabotage my career in the Special Investigation Unit?”
“Those are two separate matters.” Qin Jinhuan was nonchalant.
“How could they be separate matters?” After Mu Yu could not see Rong Jian anymore, she finally turned around to stare at Qin Jinhuan angrily. “That was a rare opportunity for a forensic doctor like me to tag along with Chief Rong for an investigation. Now that you messed things up, Chief Rong will not bring me out for investigation anymore!”
“That’s the best.”
“Qin Jinhuan!” Mu Yu sounded agitated and wronged. “If you insist on behaving like this, I will be angry for real!”
“Why would you be angry at me over such a small matter?” Qin Jinhuan grinned as he cupped her face in his hands.
“Don’t be cheeky with me. I’m dealing with a serious matter here! Today’s incident had nothing to do with Chief Rong, and it was your fault for scolding him. You’ll have to apologize to him!”
“Apologize? Sorry, there’s no such word in my dictionary.”
Mu Yu slapped away his hand and glared at him with her dewy eyes. “Well, your dictionary must be counterfeit! Please get yourself a genuine version!”
Now that Mu Yu was all worked up, Qin Jinhuan finally felt assured that she was fine and he stopped bickering with her. He held onto her hand and stared at her with a smile. Mu Yu was frustrated after ten seconds of silence when she suddenly thought of a cliché from web novels. She followed along and ordered him, “Sleep on the sofa tonight!”
Upon hearing that, he released her hand and turned to his side. To her astonishment, he took out his phone and winked at her. “I’ll apologize to Rong Jian. In exchange, you will remove the pillow from the middle of our bed tonight!”
Remove the pillow that serves as a border? Does he plan to…
“Dream on! Don’t make the call.” Mu Yu blushed and lunged forward to grab his phone. She knew very well how shameless he could be when he went rogue. The last thing she wanted was for him to go wild tonight over that promise.
“I am definitely going to make the apology.” Qin Jinhuan smiled and raised the phone higher out of her reach.
At that moment, his phone rang and the screen displayed a call from an unknown number. He stared at it for a while and frowned as he rejected the call. Mu Yu could tell that something was wrong on the spot as she stared at him icily, hinting at him that she had read his mind.
“Are you angry at me for not taking a sales call?” He smiled and placed his fingers under her chin to mess around.
“Was that really a sales call?” She was doubtful.
“Why would I lie to you? Look, I have hung up the call. The person definitely will not call again…” Before he managed to finish his sentence, his phone rang again from the same caller. He took a look at it and immediately lowered his gaze in embarrassment.
Mu Yu took note of the number as well; the final six digits were 123456 which were easy to memorize. She snorted and turned her face away to show her indifference toward him.
Qin Jinhuan hesitated for a few seconds and picked up the call with a sullen expression.
