Chapter 148 Kiki’s Lie
Rong Jian was shocked. “Escaped? When did that happen?”

“Probably at noon.”

Irate, Rong Jian bellowed, “What do you mean by ‘probably at noon’?”

Liu Xiaofan was heard explaining himself in a defeated tone, “Isn’t Wang Linhua staying in the dorm of the water delivery company? In order to hide myself, I kept a lookout at the opposite of the company’s entrance…”

“Get to the point!”

“Okay, okay. After two o’ clock in the afternoon, I was expecting Wang Linhua to show up because his delivery shift is in the afternoon. However, I felt puzzled when I couldn’t see him anywhere, so I ran to check with his company. Only then was I informed that he had taken leave earlier this morning. I checked the company surveillance camera and saw him leaving from the side door. I didn’t even know that there was a side door!”

“Shouldn’t you be checking the surveillance cameras around his company for the direction he took when he left?”

“Alright, I will do it now.”

“Get someone from the Bureau to help you.”

“Got it. I will report to you if there’s an update.”

“He just adds to the mess without getting anything right!” Rong Jian ended the call in anger and swiftly started the car. Noticing that he was heading toward the Bureau, Mu Yu turned to check with him, “Chief Rong, where are we headed to?”

“To Old Street.”

“Do you think that Wang Linhua is off to find Kiki? Didn’t you also send some men to monitor her? If he has gone to meet her, the team will probably update you.”

Rong Jian shook his head. “He did not leave from the main entrance probably because he had guessed that we would be keeping an eye on him. Therefore, he could have also guessed that we would be monitoring Kiki. If he wants to find Kiki, he will do so by unconventional methods.”

After a slight pause, Mu Yu asked him softly, “What do you think is the probability of Wang Linhua being Kiki’s biological father?”

“It is highly likely. Don’t you think they resemble each other in terms of their features?”

“I have never met Kiki, so I cannot determine their resemblance. But I don’t think it’s possible that they’re related as Wang Linhua looked only a little older than thirty.”

“So what?” Rong Jian laughed at her reasoning. “Men can impregnate someone at fourteen or fifteen years of age.”

She thought that his words made sense. Since he was speeding, she did not comment further to avoid distracting him from his driving.

Soon, Rong Jian drove into Old Street and stopped in front of the building where Linda lived.

“Chief Rong, Doctor Mu, why are you here?” Right when they left the car, they were greeted by Guo Fei from the Special Investigation Unit who was keeping watch in plain clothes.

Rong Jian nodded as a form of greeting as he asked, “Did any suspicious person enter this building at noon?”

Guo Fei answered with great confidence, “Except for the residents, no stranger entered the building. Since this building is soon to be demolished, most residents have moved away. Only four families remain.”

“Is Kiki still in there?”

“Yes, she has not left since entering the building yesterday. Same for Linda. By the way, around noon, a delivery man went in. I saw the order and it was from Linda. Anyway, there was nothing suspicious with the delivery man. I checked his ID and he was just a student working part-time.”

“Great. Continue keeping watch down here. I will go up and check on her.” Rong Jian patted Guo Fei’s shoulder.

“Alright, Chief Rong.” Guo Fei looked excited knowing that Rong Jian’s action was a subtle praise. Rong Jian waved at Mu Yu, signalling her to follow him up.

When they reached Linda’s unit, Rong Jian did not knock on the door. Instead, he turned to Mu Yu and looked abashed. “Yu, you should knock.”

Mu Yu was aware of his worries. She suppressed her laugh and went forth to knock on the door.

“Who’s there?” They heard a young woman’s voice from within.

“It’s Kiki,” Rong Jian explained to Mu Yu in a whisper before answering in a loud voice. “It’s me. I’m Rong Jian from the Crime Unit.” After announcing himself, he inched to the side to make place for Mu Yu at the center. Mu Yu finally poked fun at him, “Don’t worry. They have had lunch, which means that they’re fully dressed.”

With his mind being read by her, he scratched his head in embarrassment but did not move forward. Knowing that he was easily flustered, Mu Yu did not force him to. After the door was opened, she led the way into the house.

As expected, Kiki and Linda were dressed appropriately. Rong Jian noticed that the two ladies carried bags and were wearing heels, which prompted him to ask, “Are you going out?”

“Yes, we are just about to go out to run some errands.” Although she was in a rush to leave, Kiki still sounded polite. “What brings you here, Chief Rong?”

Rong Jian went right at the heart of the matter. “Did Wang Linhua come for you? Or did he give you any calls?”

“No.” Kiki seemed a little uneasy. “Why would he come and see me? Didn’t I tell him before that he got the wrong person?”

Rong Jian smiled. “Nothing. Just asking.”

Beside Kiki, Linda smiled and interjected, “I bet that he won’t dare to claim Kiki as his daughter again.”

“Huh?” Rong Jian looked quizzically at Linda. She explained, “Gosh, you haven’t seen how fierce Kiki was yesterday. She almost tore him apart.”

Kiki shrugged at Linda’s exaggeration. “He’s just unlucky that he came over when my mood was at the worst point. I had been looking for a punching bag.”

Rong Jian did not laugh at her words. Instead, he asked her in a serious manner, “You mentioned that you lost both of your parents. Do you remember when exactly they passed?”

Kiki shook her head. “I cannot recall the exact date. They might have passed away when I was seven or eight. Or maybe five, six years old. It’s hard for me to recall a lot of things from my past.”

Linda put her arm around her friend and explained to Rong Jian, “Kiki was hit on the head by her foster father, which is why she has a bad memory.”

“I see.” However, Rong Jian was not ready to give up. “Do you really have no recollection of your father?”

“None.” Kiki smiled wryly. “I’m sorry for my inability to recall events from the past. Plus, I was born forgetful. That’s why I cannot remember details from my past.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t probe this on purpose. It’s just that…”

However, Kiki looked understanding. “That’s alright. I’m very willing to help you. It’s too bad that my memory sucks, so I can’t be of great help.”

“Thanks for your understanding. Oh, whose birthday is it today?” Rong Jian’s gaze fell on the unfinished cake on the coffee table.

“It’s Kiki’s twenty-first birthday,” Linda answered.

“Happy birthday!” Rong Jian wished Kiki, and he suddenly slapped his own head. “Thankfully you reminded me of it. My mom’s birthday is on the eighth next month. I’ll have to pre-order a cake so that she won’t complain that I’m a bad son.”

“Is your mom’s birthday on January 8th?” Kiki’s eyes lit up. “What a coincidence.”

“Why so?” Rong Jian was puzzled.

“My mom’s birthday was January 8th too!” Kiki’s eyes dimmed down. “Sadly, she’s not around anymore.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I’m really sorry,” Rong Jian apologized hastily.

“It’s okay.” Kiki acted fine as she let out a sigh. Right then, her phone rang. Kiki checked the caller ID and immediately took the call. After a brief conversation, she hung up and turned to Rong Jian. “Chief Rong, I have an appointment with someone to discuss some matters. Do you have any other questions?”

“That’s all for now. We should leave too. Sorry for the interruption.” Rong Jian instantly signaled to Mu Yu to leave.

“Let’s go down together then.” Kiki and Linda waited for Rong Jian and Mu Yu to step out before they joined their guests to leave the building.

After exiting the building, Rong Jian pointed at a car parked by the street. “I happen to be free now. Where are you going? I’ll give you a lift.”

Kiki politely declined, “We won’t want to bother you…”

“We’re heading to the International Trade Center.”

“Linda!”

After being chided by Kiki, Linda grinned at her friend. “Aren’t you short of time? It’s hard to flag a cab down here. Since Chief Rong is free, we can get a ride.”

“It’s not a big deal. I’m very willing to be at the service of you ladies.” Rong Jian smiled and opened the car door for them.

After sending the two ladies to the International Trade Center, Rong Jian drove his car to a safe area and made a call to Guo Fei, reminding the latter to keep monitoring Kiki. He told Guo Fei that Kiki might be leaving An City soon. When he ended the call, Mu Yu asked him in confusion, “Chief Rong, how do you know that Kiki will be leaving An City?”

Rong Jian smiled. “I noticed a real estate sale contract in her bag, on which her name is printed as the owner. Lately, the property prices have been dropping. Hence, it is an unwise decision to sell her property now unless she has some reason that forces her to do so. For example, leaving the city.”

“By the way, Chief Rong, did you recall your mom’s birthday wrongly? Isn’t her birthday on May 20th? I remember that Ying mentioned it to me. Your mom shares the same birthday as me.”

“Yes, her birthday is indeed May 20th. The reason I mentioned a wrong date was to test Kiki. If she could remember her mom’s birthday, it is impossible for her to forget her father’s face.”

Mu Yu was taken aback. “Do you mean that she has been lying? Why would she lie?”

“I can’t figure that out too. However, don’t you think that her attitude toward Wang Linhua yesterday was a little over the top?”

“It seems so. Kiki doesn’t look like someone with a bad temper.” Mu Yu agreed with his opinion as she looked more confused than over. “Could it be that Kiki recognized Wang Linhua as her biological father and intentionally refused to acknowledge him? But why? And why did she lie to us today? Logically, she would have craved for a family!”

Rong Jian gave it some thought before voicing out his conjecture, “I have a feeling that she dare not acknowledge him as her father even though she wished to.”

“Dare not acknowledge him?!”

“Yup. She didn’t want to acknowledge him in order to protect him. She did not want others to know that Wang Linhua is her father. After all, that would have established a motive to murder Zhao Yongli.”

Mu Yu’s gaze turned cold. “Could it be that the real murderer is Wang Linhua? And that Kiki knows something about it?”

“Yes. In other words, her refusal to acknowledge him yesterday was a clear signal to him to leave An City.”

“Why did she complicate things? After the murder case of Zhao Yongli, she could have asked Wang Linhua to leave An City.”

Rong Jian shook his head at her naive question. “She probably did not know that he’s her father back then. She was only aware of it when Wang Linhua went to find her yesterday. She also knew that we had suspected him before and immediately realized that Wang Linhua was the murderer. However, she had to pretend that she did not know him in Linda’s presence. I guess that she is preparing to avoid Linda sometime later to find him, but she did not anticipate that we would be on the move this soon.”

While they were chatting, his phone rang. He immediately took the call when he saw that it was from Liu Xiaofan.

“Have you found Wang Linhua?”

“No. Chief Rong, he has exited the city in a rental car.”

“Exited the city? Which direction is he heading?”

“Toward the north. There is a GPS system on his rental car. I’m checking in with you if I should follow him.”

“Of course you should! Get Wu Xing to go with you.”

“I’m with Wu Xing now.”

“Alright, move fast. Keep in touch and stay safe.”

“Got it.”

After the call, Rong Jian muttered to himself, “Toward the north… Could he be heading to Huacheng? Why is he going to Huacheng at this time?”

Mu Yu was startled. “Don’t tell me that he’s going after Zhao Yongli’s ex-wife after killing the man? Maybe she was involved in pushing Kiki into prostitution.”

“That’s possible!” In that instant, Rong Jian turned frantic and took out his phone. “Yu, I have to follow him to Huacheng. I’ll ask Zeyu to fetch you.”

“Go ahead. I’ll take a cab back home.” Mu Yu immediately got out of the car but she accidentally shifted some of the paper on the seat which scattered all across the floor. She proceeded to pick up the paper.

“Hey, Rong Jian. Who’s this lady?” Mu Yu asked him with a piece of printed photo in her hand.

“That’s Kiki. It’s a photo of her bare-faced. We took it yesterday in order to compare her features with that of Wang Linhua.” Rong Jian came out of the car to take the photos from her with a smile. “Don’t you think that she looks pure without makeup?”

As Mu Yu stared at the photo in his hand, she suddenly let out a scream in horror.
