My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 144
Chapter 144 Mu Yu’s Suspicion
After Mu Yu entered the alley, Wang Linhua was already standing in front of a residential building as he looked back at his surroundings. Therefore, she hurriedly darted out of the alley without looking behind, only to bump into someone.
“Oops! I’m sorry. I didn’t mean… Hey, why are you here?”
It turns out that it was Qin Jinhuan.
“I’m worried about you. What’s the status?”
“Shh—”
Mu Yu turned around and peeked at the alley from the corner of the wall.
The place where she was standing happened to be a blind spot from all streetlights, therefore she wasn’t worried about being seen by Wang Linhua.
“What’re you looking at?” Qin Jinhuan stuck his head out and peeked at the alley while confusedly asking.
“Do you see that man over there? He is going in!”
As Mu Yu was about to step forward and tail the man, Qin Jinhuan pulled her back.
“What are you doing?!” She anxiously stamped her feet.
“Who is that man?”
Upon seeing through his jealousy, she knew he misunderstood, which she found both annoying and hilarious. She then proceeded to explain, “What’re you thinking? This man was a suspect for Zhao Yongli’s murder earlier! I can only say this much for now, and I’ll explain the rest to you later. He seems to be acting a little strange, so I’m going to tail him and find out what he is up to.”
Upon saying that, she shook off his hand and carefully crept in the shadows along the wall while moving forward.
“Rong Jian is here. I’ll tell him to come over.”
“No!” She quickly stopped him. “Chief Rong and his team have already ruled this man out as a suspect. So, if they knew that I was tailing him, they would probably think I had nothing else better to do. Besides, it’s just my suspicion, which is not sufficient to prove that he is really up to no good.”
“Then, you should tell him your suspicion and let him do the investigation instead. Because who knows whether he’s a dangerous person? And if he notices you, your life could be at risk.”
She was touched by his words, after which she returned to hold his hand and comforted him. “Don’t worry. If I sense any danger, I will surely contact Chief Rong. Furthermore, I won’t act recklessly because I’m not dumb after all.”
“It’d be too late by the time you sensed danger. So, I can’t let you take that risk.” He grabbed her hand and kept her from moving forward.
She grimaced and said, “I still have you, don’t I?”
“What if there are too many of them? I can’t protect you in that case.” He reached out for his phone with his other hand.
“Huan!” She quickly held his hand while begging pitifully, “You know I’m a rookie in the special investigation unit. So, I don’t want to screw this up and embarrass myself in front of my colleagues.”
“Who dares to look down upon my woman?”
“Come on. Now is not the time for you to show off.” As Qin Jinhuan seemingly wouldn’t stop nagging, she decided to leave him behind and made her way outside the building while secretly observing the building’s interior surroundings.
All of the buildings along Old Street were built during the same period of time. Therefore, their interior structures were more or less similar, with pitted and uneven stairs in a dim environment. Besides, there was no gate at the entrance to the building, where accesses were not controlled.
Similarly, it was a seven-story building with two blocks, inhabited by approximately fourteen households, two of which at each level.
She sneaked into the backstairs, stood before the handrail, and peeked upwards, only to realize the lights of each of the stories above were on. After knowing that those were not motion-sensing lights, she was disappointed because she wouldn’t be able to deduce which level Wang Linhua was at.
Nevertheless, she reckoned Wang Linhua’s actions were suspicious for a reason.
According to Rong Jian’s investigation, Wang Linhua only came to An City, where he had no friends and family, to make a living half a month ago. He was an honest man and also a man of few words. Unless it was job-related, he wouldn’t interact much with his colleagues most of the time. Besides, he’d only return to his dormitory and go nowhere else after work.
However, she saw Wang Linhua at Old Street for two nights running, which contradicted what Rong Jian had told her. She thought he was working when she saw him yesterday. So, she didn’t overthink about it, especially after hearing Rong Jian ruled him out as a suspect. Nonetheless, she found it suspicious to still see him again today, not to mention at this hour, which was after the water delivery company’s operation hours.
Who was he after here?
When she was still figuring out an answer, she suddenly heard footsteps coming from upstairs. She was frightened by that, whereupon she immediately turned around and backed out of the stairs, only to see Qin Jinhuan standing behind. She then shushed him and took him outside.
Qin Jinhuan was able to read her gesture. So, with his hand holding hers, he quickly pulled her to his arms and turned around to face the staircase with his back.
“He is not up to any monkey business here, is he?!” Mu Yu appeared to be anxious.
“Maybe he came here to kill someone.”
“I don’t think that’s possible. He has only come to An City for half a month, in which he doesn’t even have a friend, let alone an enemy. Moreover, Chief Rong and his team have already…” When she heard footsteps reaching the first floor, she instantly kept her mouth shut while guessing the possibilities of Wang Linhua going upstairs.
The slow and heavy footsteps drew closer to them but soon moved further away from them. It was only then when she finally looked up and leaned on Qin Jinhuan’s shoulder to peek at what was behind.
At this time, Wang Linhua’s shadow was heading toward the end of the alley. Compared to his initial footsteps, his current footsteps were heavier. Even his hat was not as low as before, although he kept looking down, seemingly in low spirits.
“I’m sure he didn’t kill anyone. Instead, he is probably just here to look for somebody, but I think he didn’t manage to find the person he was looking for.”
Qin Jinhuan didn’t say a word more as he turned around and saw Wang Linhua disappearing at the other end of the alley. He then asked, “Let’s go, shall we?”
“Wait a second.”
Mu Yu pushed him away and stood in the space right in front of the building while looking up at the lights through the windows to surmise which unit Wang Linhua was in. Apart from that, she also wondered whether it was necessary for her to head upstairs and inquire about his whereabouts.
“Yu.”
“Chief Rong?! You…” Mu Yu looked at Rong Jian, who emerged from the dark, with her eyes wide open.
“I came as soon as I could after receiving Huan’s location. What’s the status of Wang Linhua? I saw him leaving on his trishaw,” Rong Jian asked while scanning his surroundings.
“It’s just my suspicion.” Mu Yu embarrassedly grinned before giving Qin Jinhuan an evil eye for being such a busybody.
“Tell me about it then.”
As she noticed Rong Jian’s serious look, she pondered, thinking that she should perhaps voice up her suspicions and concerns in a concise manner.
After that, she carefully explained, “Although Wang Linhua has been ruled out as a suspect, I find his behavior today a little strange and suspicious. Therefore, I believe there’s a good reason for us to find out who he is meeting upstairs.”
“It sounds strange, indeed. I’ll look into it now.” Rong Jian reached out his phone while talking to Qin Jinhuan, “Huan, Ze Yu and Ying are already there. Perhaps you and Yu could head there first, and I’ll see you there when I’m done.”
“Chief Rong, I’ll go with you…”
“Sure, then we’ll see you there.” Qin Jinhuan ignored Mu Yu’s words and dragged her out of the alley.
“Huan! You could leave first! I’ll stay with Chief Rong…”
“Let him do the job. Don’t starve yourself.”
“Come on. I won’t die of hunger for eating late. After all, I’m a member of the special investigation unit. Therefore, I’m duty-bound to…”
“You’re a Forensic Doctor. Moreover, this is not a crime scene, so you’re not needed here.”
“Besides attending to a crime scene, a Forensic Doctor has many other purposes for serving as well. Furthermore, no one knows whether there will be a homicidal case upstairs.” Of course, she didn’t hope for anything like that to happen but was instead trying to convince Qin Jinhuan and Rong Jian to let her stick around and help out with the investigation.
Even though she wished to stay behind, Rong Jian didn’t dare to grant her wish. Instead, he pointed at his phone and said, “Yu, Fan will bring the neighboring committee here later. So, I think you and Huan should leave first. Everything else should be fine here, which there is no need for so many people to be here. Otherwise, it’d be even easier to create panic among the residents.”
Upon agreeing with Rong Jian, Mu Yu decided to give in. She contemplated shortly before reminding, “Chief Rong, if you find anything new, you have to let me know.”
“Alright, I’ll call you when I find anything new.”
“Alright, let’s go.” Qin Jinhuan gently held her hand and walked with her to the Chinese restaurant.
On their way there, Mu Yu still seemed preoccupied about Wang Linhua’s motive, but when she recalled what Qin Jinhuan did, she unhappily warned him, “I may not be a police officer, but I’m still a member of the public security system. Therefore, I don’t mind if you won’t lend me a hand during my investigation in the future, but I would appreciate it if you could stay out of my way. This is my job, just like yours as Qing Tian Group’s president. You must lead your company and employees to prosperity and success. Do you get me?”
When he noticed her displeasure, he stopped in his tracks and placed his hands on her shoulders before he explained, “The reason I stopped you from going further is that I don’t want you to put yourself in danger.”
“I know you care about me, but this is my job. I… Alright, I’ll watch out the next time, okay?” She didn’t want to end up in a skirmish with him over such a trivial matter. Neither did she want him to realize the hazardous nature of her job and thus, force her to resign.
Qin Jinhuan nodded and placed his arms around her shoulders, as they both continued walking forward.
In fact, he indeed wanted to convince her to resign from her job and stay home as the Young Mistress Qin. Nevertheless, he gave up that idea after seeing her passion for her job.
The couple arrived at the Chinese restaurant and indulged in the delicious mutton with Wen Zeyu and Rong Ying.
With Rong Ying around, the meal was even more enjoyable for Wen Zeyu. He cracked a few jokes that amused Rong Yin and even Qin Jinhuan, who always pulled a poker face.
However, Mu Yu was not in the mood for jokes, to which she always responded with a brittle smile. Instead, she couldn’t get her eyes off the entrance of the room.
Rong Ying and Wen Zeyu sensed something wrong about her, whereupon they shifted their stern gazes to Qin Jinhuan.
Qin Jinhuan shrugged without saying a word but merely refilled her bowl with mutton soup.
Upon noticing all eyes on her, Mu Yu finally became aware of her absent-mindedness. She then awkwardly grinned before vaguely explaining that she was waiting for Rong Jian to keep her posted about the case.
The nosy Wen Zeyu instantly tried to probe into the case’s details; after that, the two slowly began analyzing the case.
After analyzing the case and finishing the dinner, Rong Jian still didn’t show up, and neither did he call to inform the rest about his status. Only then did Mu Yu realize that the case might be even more complicated than it seemed to be. As she was still worried, she walked away from Qin Jinhuan and the rest to a quiet corner before she called Rong Jian.
“Chief Rong…”
“Yu, I have something important to deal with. So, I’ll call you again later at night.” Rong Jian finished his sentences and hurriedly hung up his call before Mu Yu could even say a word.
Rong Jian’s words put Mu Yu on edge. Although she didn’t know what he found out, she believed it had something to do with Zhao Yongli’s murder case, which unsettled her even after returning home. She curled up in her bed with her phone in her hand, ignoring Qin Jinhuan no matter how many times he told her to get showered.
Qin Jinhuan felt helpless about Mu Yu’s obsession, following which he secretly called Rong Jian to give him a piece of his mind. Then, he sat next to her and hugged her while the two of them wandered.
It was half-past eleven at night when Mu Yu’s phone finally rang. After noticing it was a call from Rong Jian, she bent over to reach for her phone and quickly answered it.
“Chief Rong, have you found anything important?”
“That’s right, Yu! What’s your take on the relationship between Kiki and Wang Linhua?” Rong Jian sounded agitated.
