My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 124
Chapter 124 It Pains to Look Back in the Past
When Mu Yu saw Wang Linhua, the water delivery man in front of her, she was once again overwhelmed with fear.
“Miss, how much did you spend on changing the screen of your phone?” Wang Linhua nervously asked as he stared at her phone. He was oblivious to the fear within Mu Yu’s heart.
“I didn’t change the screen of my phone.” Mu Yu then turned around and left.
“Miss!” Wang Linhua quickly blocked her off and said, “Although I am poor, I would be able to afford to compensate you for the screen of the phone.”
“Hey!” Mu Yu was flustered when he suddenly came so close to her and she naturally took a few steps back.
“Oh, I am sorry.” Only then did Wang Linhua realize his mistake. He immediately pulled his arm back and repeatedly apologized, “Don’t take this the wrong way as I don’t have any ill intentions. I merely wish to compensate you for the screen of your phone. After all, I was the one that knocked it over.”
When he saw that she kept quiet, he pondered for a moment and said, “Since you chose to keep quiet, I will head over to the phone repair shop and ask the owner.” Upon saying that, he quickly walked into a shop next to them.
Only then did Mu Yu realize that there was a phone repair shop next to the public restroom. She was actually standing in front of the entrance of the shop.
Mu Yu stared at Wang Linhua’s slightly slouched silhouette and his guileless look flashed across her mind. Then, she also thought of Rong Jian’s remarks and for some reason, she doubted herself. Although he looked like the man that caused her tremendous amount of nightmares, he clearly did not have the vicious vibe of a murderer.
Could it be that he merely looked similar to the murderer? After all there are so many people in this world, it wouldn’t be surprising to have two people that looked the same.
Oh right! The man had a mole under his eye!
Mu Yu was overwhelmed by fear as she deduced that Wang Linhua was the murderer at first glance. Thus, she did not dare to take a closer look at his face and did not realize if he fit the characteristics of the murderer.
“Miss…”
As she was deep in thought, Wang Linhua ran out of the shop and she quickly put him out of her mind. She forced herself to remain calm while she looked nervously at him.
“The boss said that a new screen of your phone model would cost around five hundred.” Wang Linhua then embarrassingly scratched his head and said, “However, I don’t have any cash with me right now. Can I look for you at Qing Tian Group tomorrow after I get the cash ready? May I know which department do you work at?”
He thought that I worked in Qing Tian Group.
He didn’t have a mole on his face!
There’s no mole!
He is someone that merely looked similar to the murderer!
Mu Yu was delighted and she heaved a sigh of relief.
“Miss, is that okay?” Wang Linhua had a nervous and embarrassed look on his wrinkled face.
“Well, you really don’t have to compensate me for that.” Mu Yu who was in a good mood quickly waved her arms at him.
“No way! I would feel guilty! If you don’t tell me which department you work at, I would still ask around the company tomorrow.” Wang Linhua looked determined and it looked as if he would not give up till he made the compensation.
Mu Yu looked at Wang Linhua who was dressed in old and patched up clothes and she was extremely touched by his actions. She could not reject him so she came up with a reason and said, “My cousin opens a phone repair shop and he told me that the screen of my phone only costs two hundred. I had planned on looking for him to help me repair my phone.”
“Two hundred?” Wang Linhua’s eyes lit up and he quickly put his hand into his pocket. However, he froze and with a worried look on his face, he asked, “Are you sure that two hundred is enough?”
“Yes! My cousin said that the phone repair business has a high profit margin.” Mu Yu had zero clue about the financials of the industry but she deduced that Wang Linhua had no idea as well. Thus, she tried her best to sound certain and convincing.
“That’s great.” Wang Linhua then took out his wallet from his pocket.
His wallet was old and there were no large bills within his wallet. He only had some spare change left. There was also a family photo on the outer layer of the wallet. She had no idea if the photo was taken recently or was the photo laminated as the photo was bright in colour.
When he saw Mu Yu checking his wallet out, he was a little embarrassed. He shifted his body to the side and avoided her gaze. He counted out two hundred from his wallet and only turned back around after keeping his wallet back. He held onto his wallet with his index finger and his thumb. Then, he counted the money in his hand a few more times and made sure that it was the right amount. Only then did he pass the money to her with an apologetic look on his face.
“I am sorry that it’s all spare cash.”
“No worries.”
When he saw that Mu Yu took over the money and stuffed it into her pocket, he anxiously said, “I think you should double check the amount.”
“There is no need for that, I trust you.”
Wang Linhua was stunned and after some time, he grinned and said, “Thank you.”
“I should be the one saying thank you as I got the opportunity to change a new screen on my phone.” By then, Mu Yu was already back to her calm self and she smiled as she pointed to her pocket where the money was.
Wang Linhua had already put his old wallet away and he smiled at her once more. Then, he walked towards the side of the road and took off on his tricycle that he used to deliver water as well.
Mu Yu stared at his fading silhouette and felt rather emotional.
Zhao Yongli who was hired by Qing Tian Group with a lucrative pay would do anything to scheme against others for his own benefits. Wang Linhua on the other hand was underpaid with a small salary and yet he insisted on compensating her despite having no money. That was certainly not an easy feat.
Mu Yu did not have the opportunity to have a closer look at the family photo he kept in his old wallet. She could only wish him all the best; for the man who had meagre resources but a rich mindset.
Just then, an idea crossed her mind. She immediately took out her phone and gave Wen Zeyu a call. After that, she wanted to give Rong Jian a call as well. However, her stomach grumbled and she had no choice but to head back to the restroom once more.
By the time she got out, it was windy and the sky had already turned dark. There was also lightning flashing and the roaring sound of thunder could be heard. The unusual weather made her restless and she immediately threw the idea of calling Rong Jian out of the window. Instead, she chose to flag down a cab and rushed home.
When she got onto the cab, her phone rang. She was surprised to see that the call was from Xin Yihan. At the same time, she was a little nervous and she quickly picked up the call.
Since Xin Yihan got married, he rarely called her unless there was something important.
“Brother Yihan?”
“Yu? Where are you?”
“I am on the way back home. Brother Yihan, what’s up?” She carefully asked while secretly praying that he was safe and sound.
“Mr. Qin sent you back?”
“Nope, he… Well, he’s still at work. Brother Yihan, is anything wrong?”
“Nothing. I just gave you a call because I saw a thunderstorm brewing.”
Mu Yu was extremely touched. Only Brother Yihan remembered that I was afraid of thunder.
She suppressed her emotions and casually replied with a forced smile, “Brother Yihan, I am fine. I am reaching home soon.”
“Have a good rest. Call me if you need anything.”
“Alright, I know.”
“Okay, I shall get going first.”
“Sure, Brother Yihan.” She hung up the phone and tried not to look out the window at the flashes of lightning. She leaned back and shut her eyes.
However, within minutes within shutting her eyes, she was startled by a loud rumbling sound of thunder. That also brought out a memory that she had intentionally sealed away deep in her mind.
She was extremely reluctant to recall about what happened that night ten years ago.
Back then, she lived with her parents in Ping City which was a few thousand miles away from An City. The reason she told everyone she moved to An City with her parents when she was two years old was because she did not want others to ask her about the reason why she left Ping City. She was afraid of relieving that memory. That day it was pouring and as per usual after dinner, she picked up the rubbish bag and headed towards a rubbish dump that was not far from her house. From afar, she saw a couple arguing in front of the rubbish dump. She was only eleven years old so she did not think much about that and proceeded as she would to drop off the rubbish. However, when she walked closer to the rubbish dump, the man suddenly took out a knife and chopped off the woman’s head. The woman’s head covered in blood with her eyes wide open rolled over next to Mu Yu’s feet. In that instant, she was spooked and terrified. Out of her natural instinct, she looked up and just then a lightning flashed. That brightened up the man’s face and that face was embedded deeply into Mu Yu’s mind like a statue. With the roaring sound of thunder, she fainted. By the time she woke up, she was already in the hospital.
From then onwards, she enclosed herself in her own space and dared not take a step out of her house. She was not willing to come into contact with strangers and whenever a thunderstorm struck, she was terrified and had nowhere to hide. Her parents were hurt and blamed themselves for the mistake. In order to alleviate her symptoms, they took on the advice of the doctor and moved to An City.
With the change in environment as well as the counselling by a psychologist, her symptoms improved and got better. However, she still could not bring herself to get out of the house and meet with strangers. As such, she could not even attend classes in school so her parents had no choice but to let her drop out of school and stay at home. She barely stepped foot out of her house for four years. She spent her time at home reading and that lasted all the way till six years ago. Things only changed when Xin Yihan moved into the house next door.
Xin Yihan’s face with a bright smile flashed through her mind. That provided some form of consolation towards her heart that was clutched together tightly. She also subconsciously grinned because of that.
She could still recall the very first time they met.
A few days after he moved in, he came over to her house and knocked on her door. Her parents had left for work and she did not dare to open the door. She stood by the door and panicked. Then, she prayed that he would stop knocking on the door and leave.
“I know you are home and I am your neighbour. Could I borrow a vice as I need it urgently? Please help me out. Please, I beg you.”
Mu Yu had no idea if his urgent tone got the best of her or it was because she had planned on trying to communicate with strangers since a while ago. Either way for some reason, she mustered the courage to open the door and lent him the vice.
From then onwards, he came by frequently to knock on her door. Sometimes it would be to borrow certain things and others would be to return certain things. Every time he came over, he would take the initiative to talk to her. In addition to that, her parents would always bring up his strengths in front of her. As such, she eventually took the baby steps to try and communicate with him. Ultimately, she became best friends with the guy who was eight years older. With his help, she finally mustered the courage to leave her house and enrolled back into school. She was finally able to reintegrate back into the society.
“You did that on purpose right? You didn’t look at the vice and you merely flung it on my feet. Fortunately enough I was agile, if not my feet would definitely have been shattered.” He would always joke with her about that when they become close friends with each other.
The good memories of their time together flashed through her mind and she could not help but let out a bright smile.
At the end of the day, the time spent together with Brother Yihan was the most relaxing and happiest time in her life.
Unfortunately those days are gone forever. Sigh…
“Miss, we are home.”
Mu Yu only realized that they had arrived at the entrance of Prosperous Manor upon the reminder by the driver. She paid the driver and got out of the car in a bad mood. She did not call anyone to pick her up and instead she walked in the rain towards Qin Jinhuan’s house.
She shivered and the cold weather managed to clear her mind.
“Ah, young mistress! Why didn’t you ask us to pick you up when you didn’t have an umbrella with you? What if you got sick because you were drenched in the rain?”
Li Xianglan screamed in shock when Mu Yu walked into the house being drenched in the rain. That started Qin Xiaozhi and when he saw how drenched she was, he angrily questioned, “What’s going on? Why didn’t Huan send you back home? This bastard! If he’s not going to send you home, he should at least give me a call! I…”
“Grandfather, it has nothing to do with Huan. I didn’t inform him about this. I shall return to my room first.”
“Sure, go ahead and change out of your damp clothes.” Qin Xiaozhi then looked at Li Xianglan and said, “Lan, hurry up and go make some ginger tea for the young mistress so that it would help to warm her up and prevent her from getting a cold.”
“Grandfather, I am alright.” Mu Yu felt a little dizzy and she was too lazy to continue the conversation so she walked back to her room.
She changed out of her damp clothes and wiped her face dry. She felt her head getting heavier so she quickly poured herself a cup of hot tea and then lay on the bed to rest.
Although the curtains were drawn, the rumbling sound of thunder could still be heard once in a while. Eventually, she was unable to suppress the fear within her and she tucked herself tight under the blanket. She became even more irritated and her head got even heavier. She tossed and turned in bed and all of a sudden she craved Xin Yihan’s comforting voice. Only he would know what she needed the most right then.
“Yu.”
Just then, a familiar voice could be heard and she opened her eyes in shock. She saw Xin Yihan’s familiar face inches away from her. A lump came into her throat and she shouted, “Brother Yihan.” She could no longer control her emotions and she cried while leaping into his arms.
