Chapter 71 Mysterious man in grey
They started to struggle with all their might. Something seemed to have sealed their mouths, so they were incapable of talking.
Cheng Xiaoxiao finally realized that they were not corpses but ghosts.
She had mistaken them as human bodies because they hung in mid-air without moving!
“What are all of you doing hanging here?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao put down her front paw and walked inside the temple. A menacing cold air shot from the side. She instinctively dodged. Then a big hole appeared on the wall behind her with a rumble.
“What evildoer enters the temple in the southern suburbs?”
A stern voice came in the direction of the cold wind.
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her paw and scratched the cat fur, which had gone into disarray from the cold energy which attacked her. Her head almost got hit.
She looked at the middle-aged man dressed in gray somewhat angrily as he sat in the old chair. He was holding something in his hand while the rest of it lay half lying on the ground as it struggled.
It seemed to be a male spirit.
Cheng Xiaoxiao stepped forward and got a closer look. “What did you do to him?”
The man in gray had a ghost in his hand. There was a gaping hole the size of a bowl in the ghost’s neck. Although his head was no longer there, he continued to struggle as though he wanted the man in gray to release him.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was so startled that her heart almost stopped. She pointed at the ghost in the man’s hands as her paw trembled and asked, “Where is his head?”
“I ate it!” said the middle-aged man in gray as he raised his head and looked at the white cat. He smacked his lips a couple of times and continued, “Interesting! A talking cat! I will eat you next once I’m done with him!”
Then he lowered his head and opened his bloody mouth to reveal his sharp fangs.
Before Cheng Xiaoxiao even saw what he did, he had torn off the ghost’s mouth with his mouth.
The sound of his chewing echoed through the air.
Cheng Xiaoxiao finally realized these ghosts hanging from the ceiling were not glaring at her earlier. Instead, they were begging her.
“I’m talking to you! Where are you from? Why are you at my temple?”
The man in gray threw the ghost aside. He stood up and walked up to Cheng Xiaoxiao and looked down at her as he said, “Didn’t anyone tell you that you will end up getting eaten by me if you come here?”
A cold threatening ghostly energy appeared around Cheng Xiaoxiao’s neck and wrapped around it a few times.
In an instant, Cheng Xiaoxiao was lifted in mid-air just like the ghosts.
“After I’m done taking care of this ghost, you’ll be next,” said the middle-aged man in gray as he raised his head and laughed. Then he went back to the chair and lifted the half-eaten ghost.
“MMM!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao felt like she was losing her breath as her mind went blank.
The ghosts around her all looked at her pitifully.
Cheng Xiaoxiao hastily raised her front paw and pulled the jade pendant out from under her fur hard.
The jade pendant was able to absorb his spiritual energy if he attacked her with it.
However, the ghost didn’t want to kill her yet. He merely wanted to fatten her first for the slaughter.
She could only rely on herself.
Cheng Xiaoxiao swiftly raised her jade pendant to the spirit energy around her neck the moment she got hold of it.
A faint green light flashed from the jade pendant. In an instant, the spirit energy entangling her neck was completely absorbed by it.
“AHHH!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao swiftly fell from the ceiling after the spirit energy disappeared.
Just as she was about to hit the ground, she instinctively flipped over and landed on all fours with her back arched.
After she had composed herself, she dug her claws into the ground as she shouted at the man in gray furiously, “That thing about getting eaten by you if I enter your temple was absolutely well-said!”
“What?”
The man in gray turned his head in shock. He looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao with disbelief in his eyes as she landed on the ground. “Little fellow, how did you do it?”
“Want to know?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao stepped forward. She lowered her head and looked at the glowing jade pendant on her neck before she looked at the man in gray and continued, “Then you have to make me happy first!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao took one more step towards the man in gray.
“What?” The man in gray hastily supported himself with the table. “Are you Granny Cat Demon?”
“Have you heard of me before?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her head. It seemed she was starting to make a name for herself in the ghost circles. A smug look emanated out from her eyes uncontrollably.
“I haven’t even settled my score with you! Yet here you are, knocking on my doors!”
BAM!
The man in gray smashed the table in his hands to smithereens. Then he lunged towards Cheng Xiaoxiao suddenly and attacked her with swift, violent blows.
“Huh?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her jade pendant as she suffered an attack from the man. She could see the jade pendant in her paws flicker once before becoming a little brighter.
“I see!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao touched the jade pendant on her neck happily.
The man in gray went against convention. Instead of feeling afraid when he heard she was Granny Cat Demon, he was a little angry.
However, she was rather pleased about the spiritual energy he just gave her.
“Be my guest!” Cheng Xiaoxiao walked a few steps closer to the man with her head held up high. “Please don’t stop!”
“You want to die!” The man’s eyes went red as he swiftly gathered a dark fog on his palm.
He had just committed a mistake. This time, he was going to whack the cat so hard that it became meat patty.
He raised his hand high as he pondered before attacking Cheng Xiaoxiao!
DING!
Came a crisp sound.
He looked at the cat who was supposed to become meat patty blowing the jade pendant worriedly.
“Sorry, my paw slipped!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao smiled at the man in gray awkwardly as she quickly straightened the jade pendant’s thread and put it back on her neck.
She almost died from shock earlier!
The moment the man in gray sent the dark fog towards her, the jade pendant suddenly fell to the ground from her neck while it was absorbing spirit energy.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at the jade pendant and noticed its thread was broken.
She reckoned she got anxious and accidentally cut it with her claws when she was hanging from mid-air. After she yanked the jade pendant repeatedly to block the man’s spiritual energy, the thread finally broke.
Fortunately, she had plenty of practice tying the bell back onto her paw. Hence, she swiftly tied the jade pendant back onto her neck in the nick of time.
“Who on earth are you?”
The man in gray was stunned. He raised his hand as he looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao angrily. “Why are my Ghost Binding Chain and Killer Palm useless against you?”
“Didn’t I just tell you? I’m Granny Cat Demon!” Cheng Xiaoxiao finally felt a sense of confidence again after she hung the jade pendant back on her neck. “What vendetta do you have against me?”
The man in gray laughed sinisterly, “Did you catch a female ghost in Bai residence a few days ago?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao contemplated before nodding and saying, “Why? Are you friends?”
It seemed peers all mixed in the same circles, so malicious ghosts hung out with other malevolent spirits. After she was done capturing him, she should ask whether he had any other friends in the capital so that she could catch them all in one fell swoop. Then she could become human.
“I have admired her for ages. I’m sure I can make her fall for me in a few years with my true love. But Granny Cat Demon ruined everything.” The man in gray suddenly raised his hand to the side, and an old chair flew into his hands.
Before Cheng Xiaoxiao knew it, the chair came hurtling towards her.
Cheng Xiaoxiao instinctively evaded it.

Cheng Xiaoxiao looked in the direction of the sound. Broken pieces of the chair had scattered everywhere.
The dark cloud hovering around the chair gathered and shot into the jade pendant in an arc.
Shock filled the man’s eyes at the sight. “What’s that on your neck?”
“Oh, this? It’s a real treasure. The woman of your dreams went to the Netherworld because of it. Why don’t you…” Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at the broken pieces of the chair and tempted him, “…try finding her by using this…”

Before she finished her sentence, a table came crashing towards her!
Cheng Xiaoxiao automatically evaded the table. Fortunately, she was in cat form now and had inherited the host’s remarkable ability to jump. Or else, she would definitely get hit by the table.

“I won’t,” replied the man in gray contemptuously.
He wanted to see what she was capable of!
“Then don’t regret it!” At the drop of her voice, Cheng Xiaoxiao waved her claws and lunged at the man in gray!
“Humph!” sneered the man coldly. His eyes went stern as he glanced at her tiny claw and hastily flew towards Cheng Xiaoxiao!
Her tiny body wasn’t even enough for him to snack on. How dare she bore extravagant hopes that she was capable of hurting him?
That was such a joke!
“Prepare to die!”
The man in gray hastily gathered spiritual energy in his palm. He raised his hand and looked down at the white cat with an evil smile on his face.
He pressed his hand downwards, and all his spiritual energy instantly exploded.
All the energy came surging straight for Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her head to reveal the jade pendant on her neck. The moment the jade pendant sensed this powerful spiritual energy, it suddenly glimmered.
