Lose My Heart to the Lovely Kitten Princess - Chapter 70
Chapter 70 Time to catch ghosts again
Cheng Xiaoxiao glared at the servant before raising her head proudly and jumping by his feet. She raised her hind leg with the bell and glanced at him as though she was asking whether he was blind.
How could he say there was no bell on her paw?
“I think she’s still wearing the bell,” said the maid while she covered her mouth with her sleeve and smiled, “Don’t worry. His Highness said she is even smarter than a human being. You have to keep your eye on her at all times if you want to make sure she stays put.”
“I know, right? That’s why I came in to take a look today the moment I heard something! I can’t let the little fellow escape me again,” said the servant as he stared hard at Cheng Xiaoxiao with his round eyes.
After lunch, Cheng Xiaoxiao took the opportunity to remove her bell and placed it beneath the window when the maid went out to talk to the servant.
Since Chu Yunshen and the others had already learned of her secret, there was no point putting the bell inside the baby bird’s cage anymore.
Cheng Xiaoxiao hastily jumped up the window after undoing the bell. Then she darted to the corner and watched as the servant talked to the maid.
Their faces were blushing as they lowered their heads and chatted.
Cheng Xiaoxiao stuck her tongue out at them both before turning for the kitchen.
First thing in the morning, she caught them acting all lovey-dovey.
She should leave the residence and catch some ghosts.
There was barely any spirit energy left in the jade pendant after she transformed into a human.
So it was about time that she started working on collecting spirit energy.
Then she could spend more time in human form and do more things during that time.
Sigh! Cheng Xiaoxiao wondered how the dogs at the dog hole were doing.
She had not gone out for ages and didn’t know whether they were okay.
Cheng Xiaoxiao contemplated as she ran. Before she knew it, she had already arrived at the kitchen backdoor.
She could see a few rows of steamy buns placed neatly on the table closest to her.
Cheng Xiaoxiao could smell their lovely scent in the air even from this distance.
“Who did this? Cover it with a plate now!”
A coarse-sounding auntie’s voice could be heard coming from the kitchen.
Cheng Xiaoxiao shrank her head in shock. She could hear the auntie talking to the other people in the kitchen.
“You newbies must remember to cover the food with a plate after you are done cooking. You haven’t encountered His Highness’ bothersome cat yet. She made trouble in the kitchen repeatedly. His Highness never punishes her, so she keeps being a nuisance just because he dotes on her! Although she has been a lot more obedient of late, there’s no telling when she will strike again. You better be careful!”
“Yes!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao dug her tiny claws into the door frame and scratched it a few times.
When was she a troublemaker?
She only planned on leaving after stealing a few buns!
Humph!
Since she had such a bad name, then she had to live up to it, right?
Cheng Xiaoxiao darted into the fire shed next to the kitchen as she thought. After making several attempts wriggling, she finally shifted the firewood at the bottom slightly. Then Cheng Xiaoxiao instantly jumped out of the fire shed.
The neat stacks of firewood suddenly collapsed with a loud rumble!
Cheng Xiaoxiao exhaled in her heart. Fortunately, she had quick reflexes. Or else, she might get squashed under the heap of firewood.
“What happened?”
Several fat silhouettes instantly encircled the place.
Cheng Xiaoxiao darted into the corner of the wall. She watched as the female cooks stood around the firewood and wondered why they were lying in disarray. “What happened to the firewood? Who chopped it yesterday? Why was it so poorly stacked?”
“I stacked it! But I clearly recall arranging the firewood neatly!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao narrowed her eyes while she hid in the corner. Served them right for calling her a troublemaking cat!
Cheng Xiaoxiao instantly jumped onto the table with the buns when she noticed there was only one female cook in the kitchen checking the vegetables. She stuffed three piping hot buns in a go into her garments until her garments bulged.
People would think she was a pregnant cat if anyone caught sight of her.
Before leaving the kitchen, Cheng Xiaoxiao purposely pushed a basin on the table onto the ground.
CLANG!
“AHHH!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao could hear the female cook behind her go, “Cat! There’s a cat in here!”
She could hear dense footsteps resembling the pitter-patter of heavy rain as they headed into the kitchen.
Cheng Xiaoxiao turned and zipped past the female cook’s legs.
“AHHH!”
The female cook noticed Cheng Xiaoxiao right away. She hastily turned her head towards Cheng Xiaoxiao, who had already run afar, and said, “Heavens! Oh my, why did you come again?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao turned her head and wagged her tail as she stuck her tongue out.
“Meow!”
She wouldn’t only be coming today, but every single day from now on.
“Is she mocking me?” asked the kitchen supervisor as she turned her head to look at the female cooks beside her.
A female cook nodded. “I think so.”
The kitchen supervisor instantly placed both her hands on her hips and spread her legs apart. She stood as straight as a compass as she shouted at Cheng Xiaoxiao, “Men! Get the cat! I must take her to His Highness and demand an explanation!”
The moment she heard they wanted to catch her, Cheng Xiaoxiao whizzed off.
She thought those stray dogs would encircle her after she came out of the dog hole.
However, they only lay on the ground sluggishly.
Cheng Xiaoxiao found this somewhat odd. Have they forgotten about her because she didn’t turn up for a few days?
She ran before them.
Then she pulled out the piping hot buns out of her garments and placed them by their mouths.
However, they only glanced a couple of times before slumping their heads back down.
“Meow”
Didn’t they like buns?
Those were freshly steamed.
The stray dogs looked at the buns briefly before barking a couple of times.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was at a loss. She thought they weren’t hungry yet.
They would probably eat the buns when they were.
Cheng Xiaoxiao had already walked out of the alley as she contemplated. She closed her eyes and chanted in her heart, “Hear my order, jade pendant and open my eyes.”
After opening her eyes, she started searching for ghosts in the capital.
She previously intended on catching ghosts at the abandoned temple in the southern suburbs. However, she ended up catching the malicious spirit dressed in red in the Bai residence.
Cheng Xiaoxiao managed to maintain her human form for at least ten minutes because of how much spiritual energy the female ghost had.
It seemed she couldn’t just blindly capture wandering spirits and had to ensure their quality as well.
Despite being powerful, her third eye had a minor flaw and was incapable of detecting how powerful ghosts were.
So she had to personally enter each location to determine the ghosts’ spiritual energy.
However, she had yet to find a solution to overcome the shortcoming, so she could only try and capture as many spirits as she could for the time being.
The time she had outside Prince Jing’s residence was precious.
Chu Yunshen and Xiaowu had already discovered that she often snuck out of the room. For now, they assumed she was just having fun elsewhere in the residence.
If they found the dog hole one day and learned about all the time she spent outside the residence, it would be tough for her ever to escape the residence in the future.
Cheng Xiaoxiao headed towards the southern suburbs with determination at the thought.
The sound of people hawking their wares attracted her attention.
“Buns! Delicious buns!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao instantly halted. She turned her head and looked at the most conspicuous bun shop by the roadside.
The shop server had just opened a large steamer’s lid to reveal layers of piping hot buns.
The tantalizing scent of meat wafted in the air.
Cheng Xiaoxiao couldn’t help walking over to the table with the buns.
“Shoo shoo shoo! Where did this cat come from?”
The shop server pulled the towel from his neck and flicked it at Cheng Xiaoxiao a few times.
Cheng Xiaoxiao jumped aside. She raised her paws and swore in her heart. After she collected enough spiritual energy this time, she had to change into a human and feast on buns!
And it had to be buns from this shop no less!
Each time she walked past their shop, she could hear him saying his buns were delectable.
She had to have a taste and see if the shop server was lying about how yummy his buns were!
Cheng Xiaoxiao swallowed her saliva at the thought. She looked hard at the white buns in the steamers in front of the shop server before glaring at him. Just you wait!
After she became human, she had to have her fill and finish all the buns in the shop!
Cheng Xiaoxiao drooled as she thought about the buns. She lowered her head to check the jade pendant on her neck as she headed for the southern suburbs.
She was checking to see if it was glowing. It would be best if she could encounter a malicious spirit like the last one.
It would minimize her efforts and generated the most amount of spirit energy, so why not?
However, there was no change in the jade pendant when Cheng Xiaoxiao was on her way to the southern suburbs.
But when she reached the steps of an abandoned temple in the southern suburbs, the jade pendant suddenly let out a strong green light before her paws even landed on the steps.
Hmm?
Were there any spirits in the temple…
Then a gust of raging wind suddenly came.
Cheng Xiaoxiao could hear the sound of ghosts howling.
The moment her paw landed on the steps of the temple, the shaky front door instantly burst open with a bang!
A cold threatening sensation came surging towards her.
“What on earth is this? Why is there such a strong wind in broad daylight? Who are you useless ghosts trying to scare?” said Cheng Xiaoxiao as she dug her claws into the ground hard and raised her head in the wind. Instead, she was left dumbstruck.
She could see countless corpses hanging from the ceiling of the abandoned temple as they swayed in the wind.
She was so startled that her hind legs went limp, and she almost sat on the ground.
After visiting so many abandoned residences, it was her first time encountering one as creepy as this one.
All the corpses were tied up by the head with something like a rope as they hung from the ceiling.
Their long tongues stuck out of their mouths with their eyes and mouth contorted. They looked as twisted as they could get.
Didn’t the government officials collect these bodies after such heinous crimes were committed?
Also, where had the ghosts gone?
She clearly saw there were hundreds of ghosts here through her third eye. Also, each of them had a lot of spirit energy.
Since her jade pendant flashed a green light, there was probably a malicious spirit inside.
Although she had the protection of the jade pendant, she ought to be wary.
Cheng Xiaoxiao went up step by step as she kept her eyes on the corpses the entire time.
Something seemed to be amiss with these dead bodies.
Why were their clothes so different?
Was fashion that diverse in this era?
It seemed as though they were wearing clothes from different dynasties.
Did they do cosplay in the ancient times?
Or else, why would they be dressed in garments from different dynasties?
Even their hairpieces were different.
The more Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at them, the odder she found them.
Just as Cheng Xiaoxiao scrutinized a corpse, he suddenly opened his eyes. His eyes looked void and listless while his pupils were gone, and all that was left were his ghastly white eyeballs.
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s front paw paused in mid-air as the corpse, and she looked at each other.
In an instant, all the corpses suddenly opened their eyes with huge drops of blood trickling down from their eyes.
