Chapter 68 Fighting overtly and secretly
If Prince Jing found out it was her maid who pushed Wan Xia’s maid, she would certainly end up implicated and get punished. She might even get driven out of Prince Jing’s residence altogether.
“A minor matter?” said Butler Liu as he stiffened his face, “Someone almost died. How can this be considered minor?”
“How can that be? I saw with my own eyes that all the maid suffered was a tiny scratch? How can her life be hanging in the balance now?” shouted the concubine sharply.
“Her wound is huge. In your eyes, is that just a minor injury?” asked Wan Xia gently after breaking her long silence.
At the drop of her voice, all the concubines exploded.
“How is that possible?”
“Precisely! I peeked through the gap in the door and saw it was just a minor scratch at best. It wasn’t that serious.”
Butler Liu nodded and told the concubines just as they whispered among themselves nonstop, “Ladies, I suggest you go back to your rooms and wait for His Highness to come home.”
Butler Liu told the two servants behind him, “You two will stand guard here.”
“Yes, Sir!” The servants nodded in agreement.
Then Butler Liu looked at Wan Xia and nodded before he left Yulan compound.
The moment Chu Yunshen got home with Xiaowu, the butler came over to report the incident that transpired at Yulan compound.
Chu Yunshen glanced at Butler Liu calmly. “Just take care of it.”
Then Chu Yunshen continued heading to his room. He wondered whether the lion cat was well behaved today and whether she got into trouble…
Butler Liu hurriedly chased after Chu Yunshen and said, “Your Highness, the one who got into trouble was Miss Wan Xia at Yulan quarters. Her maid…”
The moment Chu Yunshen heard her name, his feet paused briefly before Butler Liu finished his sentence. Then he raised his hand and interrupted and told Xiaowu, “Go check out the situation with him.”
“Master, Wan Xia is such a troublemaker! She caused problems the moment she entered the residence!” complained Xiaowu angrily as he glanced at Yulan quarters.
He naturally took it for granted that it was Wan Xia causing problems. After all, things had been so quiet at Yulan quarters all this time that it felt almost nonexistent.
However, the moment Wan Xia entered the residence, trouble brewed!
Butler Liu hurriedly explained, “It wasn’t Miss Wan Xia’s fault. I think this time, the one who started it might be… Miss Su.”
“Su Ninglan?”
Chu Yunshen narrowed his eyes as he glanced at the butler.
Butler Liu nodded and replied, “That’s right, Your Highness!”
“How can that be? Liu, can you say that again? Who was it making trouble?”
Butler Liu bowed to Xiaowu and said, “Sir, it was Miss Su.”
“Also…” Butler Liu glanced at Chu Yunshen as he said cautiously, “Miss Wan Xia’s maid might not survive the night.”
Chu Yunshen’s expression went cold. His leg paused as he walked through the door. Then he turned to say, “Let’s go to Yulan quarters.”
“Yes, Master!” said Xiaowu as he rubbed his ears.
Did he hear correctly?
Who did Butler Liu just say was making trouble?
Su Ninglan?
He always felt any concubine would make trouble in the residence except Su Ninglan.
Considering who she was, she would only be lowering her status if she rivaled with the other concubines for Chu Yunshen’s attention.
After Butler Liu led Chu Yunshen into Yulan quarters, they saw the concubines standing at the center of the courtyard awaiting Chu Yunshen.
Among all the heavily made-up women, Su Ninglan and Wan Xia stood out the most.
One of them was dressed in white, and the other was dressed in blue, and neither wore any makeup.
Their hair was done up simply with a plain silver hairpin.
“Greetings, Your Highness!”
Chu Yunshen’s eyes landed on Su Ninglan before he glanced at Xiaowu. Xiaowu instantly bowed and entered Wan Xia’s room.
Chu Yunshen walked over to the seat in the center of the quarters and sat down and said, “You may rise.”
“Thank you, Your Highness!”
All the concubines thanked Chu Yunshen as they bowed again.
They stood up to look at Chu Yunshen with affection in their eyes and charming smiles on their faces.
“How’s the maid?” asked Chu Yunshen coldly as he looked at Wan Xia.
Wan Xia wiped the corner of her eye. Then she stepped forward and bowed to Chu Yunshen as she said chokingly, “She hasn’t regained consciousness yet.”
“Mhm,” said Chu Yunshen as he nodded. He turned to look at Su Ninglan. “Do you have anything to say?”
Su Ninglan looked at Chu Yunshen with her lovely eyes upturned. She looked indescribably captivating and vehement as she looked at Chu Yunshen deeply. “What do you want me to say, Your Highness?”
Chu Yunshen took the tea from the maid and took a sip before he asked, “How did the maid end up knocking her head on the pillar?”
“I don’t know, Your Highness,” replied Su Ninglan coldly.
“Then what about the rest of you?”
Chu Yunshen’s scanned his eyes at the concubines standing in the first row.
Everyone went cold when they heard Chu Yunshen.
Then he turned to glance at Su Ninglan.
“Hmm? I’m the one asking the question. Why are you looking at her?”
Chu Yunshen glanced around coldly.
Su Ninglan covered the corner of her mouth with her handkerchief and coughed gently before saying, “Since His Highness wants to know, just tell him honestly. I’m sure he will treat the matter impartially.”
A concubine immediately pointed at Wan Xia’s room and said, “The maid bumped into the pillar on her own!”
“Yeah!” Another concubine quickly chimed in after someone set the ball rolling, “The maid didn’t keep her eyes open while she was walking and went right into the pillar!”
A few concubines scrambled to explain to Chu Yunshen.
After some time, Chu Yunshen’s lips curved into a cold smile. “Oh, really?”
Xiaowu came out of the room after checking on her. He walked up next to Chu Yunshen before going close to his ear and whispering a few words to him.
Chu Yunshen’s eyes went dark before he scoffed coldly. He placed the teacup on the table and pointed at the concubines in front of him, and said to Xiaowu coldly, “Give them 20 strokes of the rod and chase them out of the residence.”
“Yes, Master!” said Xiaowu instantly before he turned to tell Butler Liu, “Butler Liu, what are you waiting for? Drag them away now.”
“Yes, Your Highness!” said Butler Liu as he bowed to Chu Yunshen. Then he told the servants behind him, “Do it!”
“No! Your Highness, why are you driving me from the residence?”
“Your Highness, what did I do?”
“Miss Su, help me!”
Before long, the concubines who claimed that Wan Xia’s maid walked into the pillar on her own were dragged away.
The rest of the concubines didn’t dare to speak, and all hung their heads without making a peep.
Chu Yunshen glanced at Su Ninglan standing by the side without daring to say a word. He picked up his teacup and took a sip before he said calmly, “That was mighty clever of you, Miss Su.”
Su Ninglan clenched her fists. Then she glanced at Chu Yunshen and said calmly, “I don’t know what you are driving at, Your Highness.”
“Really?”
Chu Yunshen glanced at Su Ninglan profoundly before he stood up and left Yulan quarters.
All the concubines who didn’t get driven out of the residence were relieved that they kept their mouths shut.
Although they bullied Wan Xia, they fortunately chose to stay mum when Prince Jing asked.
“Farewell, Your Highness!”
They paid their respects to Chu Yunshen as he headed out the courtyard. Then they glanced at Su Ninglan before their maids helped them back to their rooms.
When Su Ninglan headed back to her room, she turned to glance at Wan Xia only to catch sight of her looking at her too.
Wan Xia bowed and gently spoke when she spotted Su Ninglan looking at her, “Ninglan.”
“Hmph!” sneered Su Ninglan before going into her room and telling the maid behind her, “Close the doors!”
“Yes, Miss Su,” acknowledged the maid immediately as she hurriedly shut the doors.
Wan Xia glanced at the tightly closed door and smiled before turning to enter her room.
“Miss Wu?” asked the maid quizzically when she saw her mistress standing at the door still.
Miss Wu looked at Wan Xia’s room hesitantly.
She knew a little about first aid. Out of concern that the maid might die, she secretly checked the maid’s injury. At that time, it seemed like a minor injury and was nothing fatal. How did she end up so badly wounded?
It appeared she had to be warier from now on in Prince Jing’s residence.
She couldn’t rely on Su Ninglan solely. Since Su Ninglan had a candid personality, Miss Wu had to come up with a backup plan to prevent herself from getting implicated.
At first, she assumed Wan Xia had misunderstood Su Ninglan. However, Wan Xia was out to get Su Ninglan from the looks of it now.
Chu Yunshen heard the bell ringing the moment he went back to the room.
He looked up to see that the little fellow had released the baby bird from the cage, and the two of them were playing with the cord on her paw.
And the bell kept ringing nonstop as she moved around.
The butler had already reported how the little fellow had escaped the room and gone all over the residence. Or else, even he would believe that she had stayed in the room obediently without going anywhere.
“Meow.”
He was back!
Cheng Xiaoxiao immediately meowed at Chu Yunshen when she saw him come back.
Chu Yunshen bent over and picked up Cheng Xiaoxiao. He raised his hand and tapped her nose. “You are so good at pretending.”
He undid the cord on Cheng Xiaoxiao’s paw as he spoke. “I’m pretty curious about how you managed to tie the cord like this.”
“Meow meow!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao acted blur as she tugged Chu Yunshen’s robe gently.
“Show me how you did it.”
Chu Yunshen placed Cheng Xiaoxiao on the ground. Then he crossed his arms and looked at her intriguingly.
“Meow.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at Chu Yunshen innocently before she placed the cord in front of the baby bird.
If it was a performance Chu Yunshen wanted, then the baby bird could do it.
Sorry, she wasn’t interested.
The baby bird instantly came over happily and lowered his head to pick up the cord when it saw it.
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her head high to glance at Chu Yunshen before walking over to the study table.
She jumped up the table swiftly!
Then she got onto the cushion and started to read.
She had to remind herself she was human constantly!
She acted like a cat several times when she became human after staying in cat form for too long.
Xiaowu walked in with a cage. “Master, the cage is here!”
The moment Cheng Xiaoxiao heard about a cage, her fur instantly exploded.
She stared at the cage in Xiaowu’s hands and arched her back with her claws extended while she hissed nonstop. Her anxious breathing even made the white whiskers by her mouth twitch.
“Master, I don’t think she fancies the cage!”
Xiaowu pointed at the cage in his hand as he looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao and said, “Shall I get one made in a different shape?”
“Meow!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao leaped off the ground and aimed right for Xiaowu!
She had to scratch his face.
However, a pair of large hands unexpectedly grabbed her by the waist while she was in mid-air.
“You look quite energetic now.”
Chu Yunshen’s cold voice came from overhead. Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her head indignantly and looked at Chu Yunshen desperately as she pointed at the cage in Xiaowu’s hand with her paw.
“Since you refuse to show me how you tied the cord, then show me how you escaped from the cage if you want my forgiveness.”
Chu Yunshen glanced at Xiaowu, who walked up to Chu Yunshen with the cage.
