Chapter 52 Her long time wish and death
Cheng Xiaoxiao had never suffered the same despair as the female ghost in red, so she was not in the position to judge her.
She turned back to check the weather outside. Although the skies were so gloomy that she was incapable of determining the time, she reckoned it was almost mid-day.
She had to capture this female ghost as soon as possible and head back to Prince Jing’s residence. If Chu Yunshen caught her sneaking out because she got home late, she would have a harder time leaving the residence in the future.
If Cheng Xiaoxiao wanted to capture this spirit, she had to find out what her unfinished business was.
Cheng Xiaoxiao scrutinized the ghost from top to toe with her third eye but failed to see what she was holding onto to.
All the other normal spirits had a thread behind them.
However, this female ghost had none.
Was it because she had passed away for too long and was too powerful?
“Weren’t you locked up by Bai Xiuyuan? How did you die in the end?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao felt she ought to start checking from the way the spirit died.
The female ghost suddenly laughed. Then she looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao dead straight in her eyes and asked instead, “If you got locked up like a dog all the time, what would you do?”
“I don’t know either,” said Cheng Xiaoxiao quizzically, shaking her head, “I might go insane.”
“Yes, you might go insane,” repeated the female ghost. Then she raised her long slender hands and touched the bright red outfit she was wearing.
“What do you think of my dress?”
“It’s very pretty,” Cheng Xiaoxiao commended from the bottom of her heart.
Her red dress was richly bejeweled and covered with precious stones.
Although Cheng Xiaoxiao could only see it in spirit state now, it was bound to be dazzling if she ever saw the real thing.
It seemed Bai Xiuyuan was rather generous towards the ghost in red.
The ghost in red chuckled. Then she swiped her nail across it and cut the red dress. “He spent a long time handpicking this dress for me…”
She kept cutting her dress as she told Cheng Xiaoxiao about the history of the dress.
Even though another hole appeared on the fine silk fabric, it quickly closed as though it had never gotten cut before.
After a long time, the red ghost finally finished telling Cheng Xiaoxiao about the dress.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at the ghost’s red dress.
Bai Xiuyuan gave her that wedding dress.
The ghost in red didn’t want to go on living a miserable life in captivity.
So she pretended to submit to Bai Xiuyuan. After she gained his trust, she told him she wanted him to marry her and throw a grand wedding.
Bai Xiuyuan surprisingly agreed to throw a wedding banquet for her.
The female ghost jumped into the well in the backyard while everyone was busy preparing for the wedding ceremony, and Bai Xiuyuan didn’t have the time to keep an eye on her.
The red dress she was in, combined with her deep grievance, turned her into a malicious spirit occupying the well.
Before Bai Xiuyuan had the chance to plan her funeral, she killed him first!
She claimed all 115 souls in the Bai residence overnight.
After Bai Xiuyuan perished, she continued to roam the earthly realm.
So it seemed Bai Xiuyuan wasn’t the only unfinished business she had in her life.
Cheng Xiaoxiao scratched her head quizzically, “Since you have already sought vengeance, why did you stay here? Why didn’t you reincarnate?”
The ghost in red went into a daze. She stopped tearing her dress for a moment, and tears glinted in her eyes. “I…I want to see…”
Cheng Xiaoxiao saw the ghost’s hands tremble as she choked up.
Although she didn’t finish her sentence, Cheng Xiaoxiao already knew who she wanted to see.
No matter how insane she became, she was still a mother.
Cheng Xiaoxiao took her jade pendant off. She immediately walked before the ghost and said, “There was something I didn’t tell you.”
The ghost in red looked up at Cheng Xiaoxiao cluelessly.
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised the jade pendant and continued, “Your son went to the Netherworld, but he hasn’t reincarnated yet.”
“Huh?”
The female ghost’s eyes went red instantly. “Why?”
“He never saw his parents in his life. What do you think is the first thing he’d want to do after entering the Netherworld?”
“…”
The ghost in red shook her head as she stared at Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Cheng Xiaoxiao chanted “the Netherworld”, and its image immediately appeared on the jade pendant.
A roughly ten-year-old boy’s spirit sat on the steps of Meng Po’s pavilion. He kept asking everyone who came to drink Meng Po’s soup whether they had lost a child before.
“…”
“He… he…”
Tears trickled down her face as the ghost in red looked at the image on the jade pendant. Her hands shook as she pointed at the boy inside the image and asked, “Has he been looking for me?”
“Yup,” replied Cheng Xiaoxiao as she nodded with certainty before adding, “He only wants to see his biological parents before he reincarnates.”
In an instant, tears cascaded down the ghost’s face like pearls.
“Ah! It was all my fault! It was my fault! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!”
The ghost in red suddenly sat on the ground and wept sadly.
Cheng Xiaoxiao watched as the ghost’s shoulder’s kept moving up and down while she sobbed.
Just as she was about to put the jade pendant back on and comfort the ghost, a yellow light unexpectedly floated from the ghost in red.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked up to see tiny streams of yellow light floating over her head. Then they converged into a single ray before they entered the jade pendant in her paw.
“Help me, Granny Cat Demon,” said the ghost in red as she looked down at the lion cat after she suddenly floated into midair.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked up at the ghost in red. Her nails had reverted to an ordinary color as the yellow light diminished.
This yellow light was probably the ghost’s spirit energy.
Cheng Xiaoxiao suddenly realized what was going on when she saw the jade pendant giving off a yellow glow. Spirit energy ordinary spirits produced was green, while malicious spirits gave off yellow spirit energy.
She wondered how much more time she could stay in human form after catching this malicious spirit.
A pair of embroidered shoes suddenly appeared Cheng Xiaoxiao, giving her a start. She hastily stepped back and almost dropped the jade pendant in the process.
When she looked up again, the ghost in red had already knelt before her and was imploring her nonstop, “Granny Cat Demon, I apologize for being disrespectful earlier! Please help me! I want to go to the Netherworld and see him!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao instantly dodged to the side and replied, “What are you doing? Get up now. You don’t have to do this. I will definitely help!”
The ghost continued to kneel on the ground. Tears welled in her eyes as she said, “For centuries, I have lived in guilt for abandoning him! However, I can’t leave the Bai residence. The only thing I could do was get ghosts who barged into the residence to help me find him.”
Then a look of fury emerged in her eyes when she got to this. “But those spirits just disappear after they leave the residence!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at the ghost who kept talking.
She had an inkling why those spirits disappeared the moment they left the Bai residence.
The ghost in red had a malevolent aura, so she must have given those ghosts that happened to pass by quite a fright.
Ordinary ghosts would have run off as far as they could once they got out of the residence. Why would they come back to get killed by her?
Cheng Xiaoxiao realized after piecing together everything the ghost in red said. She caused too much of a commotion when she captured wandering spirits in the northern suburbs and startled the nearby wandering spirits.
So they panicked and hid inside the Bai residence!
After the ghost in red learned about Cheng Xiaoxiao, she kept waiting for her here. Except she didn’t expect Cheng Xiaoxiao to turn up so quickly.
“Come here.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao held the jade pendant before the female ghost.
The ghost was so petrified that she instantly shrunk back with terror in her eyes.
“Don’t be afraid. It won’t attack you this time. The jade pendant is connected to the Netherworld, so you can reach it by entering the jade pendant.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao could see gold light beaming nonstop from the slightly warm jade pendant.
This was how it looked when wandering spirits got sucked into it. The only difference was that the light was yellow now.
“It won’t hurt!”
The female spirit hid behind Cheng Xiaoxiao as she held the jade pendant.
“He’s waiting for you.” Cheng Xiaoxiao placed the jade pendant before the ghost again. This time, she suddenly stopped running and stared straight at the jade pendant before she suddenly floated into midair and flew towards the pendant.
The instant Cheng Xiaoxiao saw the female ghost lunging towards the jade pendant, she suddenly transformed into black smoke and got sucked into it.
At the same time, the skies lit up.
Sunlight came pouring down by Cheng Xiaoxiao’s feet. She raised her head and looked out the house at the sunlight and couldn’t help heaving a sigh of relief.
It was finally over.
Cheng Xiaoxiao instinctively felt that the female ghost would get reincarnated when she leaped towards the jade pendant.
In the past, wandering spirits immediately transformed into black smoke and got sucked into the jade pendant after all unfinished business was settled.
However, the female ghost was a malicious spirit, and it was the first time she dealt with one.
So Cheng Xiaoxiao was rather nervous.
After capturing the ghost, she felt exhausted.
Cheng Xiaoxiao lowered her head and looked at the jade pendant in her paws while light beamed brightly from it. Although she was tired, the female ghost possessed far more spirit energy than that of all the wandering spirits she captured a few days ago. Hence, it was considered quite an accomplishment.
Cheng Xiaoxiao hung the jade pendant back on her neck. She looked at the sky outside and noted it was past midday.
There was still some time before Chu Yunshen came back home, but it wasn’t enough for her to capture wandering spirits in the southern suburbs.
However, Cheng Xiaoxiao didn’t want to go straight home. She kept looking around on her way home and ended up taking a stroll on the streets.
“Buns! Delicious buns!”
“Tofu! Soft tender tofu!”
Shopkeepers kept shouting their wares on the streets. Cheng Xiaoxiao was dying to become human, so she could have a feast. Since the victory banquet was taking place soon, she felt she could still restrain herself.
Palace delicacies were bound to be far better than street food.
She didn’t know how long she could take human form for either. If she could only change into a human once and she used it up now, she might have to stay as a cat for the victory banquet.
“Pig trotters! Pig trotters that melt in your mouth!”
“Biscuits! Yummy and crispy biscuits!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao eagerly stared as she kept walking past food that ended up getting devoured by others.
Judging from how swiftly they gobbled up the food, it must have been absolutely tasty.
She swallowed her saliva and placed her paw on the jade pendant.
No, don’t do it!
Do it right now!
Two voices broke into an intense argument in her head.
Moments later, Cheng Xiaoxiao removed her paw from the jade pendant, so the voice telling her not to change into a human now won.
She glanced at the meat buns in front of her. Their fragrance wafted through the air, making her stomach rumble incessantly.
Cheng Xiaoxiao seemed like a miser with pockets full of money but was reluctant to buy a thing.
