Chapter 51 Third son of the Bai family, Bai Xiuyuan
“Was there a boy’s spirit there?…”
The female ghost suddenly paused. She waved her slender and fair hands over her face, and the blood on her face instantly disappeared as though she was performing a magic trick to reveal a pretty face.
Then she pointed behind her ear and continued asking, “ … he had a birthmark behind his ear.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao knew who that ghost was talking about when she caught sight of her appearance.
“Yes, I’ve seen him.” Cheng Xiaoxiao nodded and raised his head to look at the female ghost.
All the hostility instantly dissipated, leaving only sheer sadness on her face.
She resembled the little boy a lot. Also, she could describe the birthmark behind the little boy’s ear accurately.
So Cheng Xiaoxiao was certain that she was the mother of the last spirit she captured at the abandoned temple!
She recalled the little boy saying that he had never seen his parents!
How could this woman be so cruel as to abandon her child at the temple?
“Really? How old was he? Why did he die? Why didn’t he reincarnate?”
The ghost in red pounced towards Cheng Xiaoxiao, leaving her so startled that she hastily jumped onto an empty spot on the ground.
Cheng Xiaoxiao immediately cheered herself on repeatedly the moment her paws landed on the ground. She had to stay calm.
Then she raised her head to look at the female ghost floating more than three meters away from her and said vaguely, “He looked barely ten years old.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao recollected how the boy looked and continued, “He was beaten up and died from blood loss due to a head injury. He didn’t go for reincarnation because he was waiting for a stray cat to find him. That cat had been with him since he was born.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao deliberately looked up at the female ghost as she floated in the air. Her face was filled with tears. Was she crying now?
Then why did she abandon the little boy to begin with?
“Other than the cat…” said the female ghost with tears pouring from her eyes as she looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao and asked anxiously, “Did he talk about anyone else? Like me?”
“No, he didn’t,” replied Cheng Xiaoxiao without any hesitation, “He didn’t say a word about his parents.”
The female spirit went into a rampage as though she had suffered a major blow and smashed all the spirit tablets in the ancestral hall to pieces!
“Why didn’t he talk about me? Why didn’t he?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao dodged behind a pillar and said as she watched the female ghost go into a rampage, “Don’t be angry. After all, he had never seen his parents from the moment he was born.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at the ghost. Cheng Xiaoxiao could see the female spirit standing with her back to her while she clenched her fists by the side of her body. Then Cheng Xiaoxiao retreated and continued, “Also, the cat had lived with him since young, so it was like family to him. Did you know? He died from saving the cat.”
The female spirit in red suddenly turned to look at the white cat viciously with her black hair covering her face.
Cheng Xiaoxiao acted as though she couldn’t detect her fury and continued, “Before he died, he climbed towards the stray cat even when he could barely walk. Then he buried it outside the temple before he breathed his last breath.”
A red silhouette suddenly charged towards Cheng Xiaoxiao, but she dodged instantly.
Then came a loud crash!
Cheng Xiaoxiao steadied herself before glancing at the spot she was standing. All that was left was broken pieces of table.
She turned to look and realized that the table with the spirit tablets placed on it was gone.
“Huuu.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao exhaled deeply. Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at the female ghost standing by the broken pieces of table, and her heart almost stopped when she made eye contact with her bloodshot eyes.
“Little fellow, are you trying to provoke me purposely?”
The ghost in red looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao and laughed sinisterly.
“No, I’m not!” replied Cheng Xiaoxiao loudly with her claws gripping the ground tightly, “I’m just saying you can’t blame him for not talking about you if you disowned him to begin with!”
“I’m going to kill you!”
The female ghost in red suddenly waved her hand, and a cold air hastily wrapped itself around Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Cheng Xiaoxiao instantly panicked. She was incapable of moving!
Just as the female spirit’s razor-sharp nails were about to pierce Cheng Xiaoxiao’s throat, a yellow light shot from the jade pendant without warning and sent the ghost flying the moment it struck her!
AHHH!
The female spirit fell against the wall behind her hard before tumbling to the ground. She could sense a lot of her spirit energy disappearing.
Was it because of the jade pendant hanging on the cat’s neck?
At the thought, the female spirit in red clutched her chest as she stared hard at the jade pendant while yellow light radiated from it. “What… what’s that?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao lowered her head to look at the jade pendant on her neck in surprise when she heard what the ghost said.
The moment the female ghost was struck by the light, Cheng Xiaoxiao could sense the cold air on her dissipating.
She looked at the jade pendant quizzically. The initially weak yellow light had surprisingly gotten stronger. What was going on?
Did that mean every time the female goes attacked her with spirit energy, she was incapable of harming her? Instead, everything would get absorbed by the jade pendant?
The thought of this made Cheng Xiaoxiao exhilarated, so she promptly scolded the female spirit heedlessly!
“You are the most coldblooded mother I’ve ever seen! You were the one who abandoned him! How could you have the cheek to be angry with him?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao could see that the ghost merely stared at her with no intention of retaliating, so she continued reprimanding her, “Who are you glaring at? Who are you trying to scare? Don’t you already know that I captured all the spirits at the temple in the northern suburbs? I am Granny Cat Demon!”
The female ghost didn’t move and looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao cautiously.
Did she have such good tolerance?
Didn’t she explode whenever she was the slightest bit upset?
Cheng Xiaoxiao inhaled deeply. Then she waved her paw at the ghost provocatively and said loudly, “Weren’t you very cocky just moments ago? Didn’t you want to eat me? Come on! I will extinguish your soul with my paws!”
“Ahhh! I’m going to kill you!”
THUD!
Cheng Xiaoxiao witnessed the female ghost lunging at her before she went flying through the air again.
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s lips curved into a smile. She was right. The moment the ghost attacked her with spirit power, the jade pendant would absorb it.
Cheng Xiaoxiao could already see that the jade pendant had gotten brighter. Then she looked up at the ghost.
Just as she was apart to speak, the ghost immediately raised her hand and begged, “Granny Cat Demon, please do me a favor and spare me! I have been around for centuries after all!”
“Do you a favor? Sure.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao didn’t hold back this time.
She instantly raised her head as she walked over to the female ghost in red and asked, “Why did you throw the boy at the temple?”
The female ghost was so terrified by the jade pendant when Cheng Xiaoxiao walked over that she shrank into a corner and shuddered as she spoke, “He should have been born!”
“What do you mean by that?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao walked up to the ghost in red and looked at her coldly.
“It couldn’t be helped because…” said the ghost in red sadly as she instantly retreated when the white cat headed towards her, “He was Bai Xiuyuan’s son!”
The more she spoke, the more distorted her expression became. Before long, she looked hysterical.
Then Cheng Xiaoxiao realized that the ghost was a pitiful woman when she heard her life story.
She used to be a respectable married woman, until Bai Xiuyuan, the third son of the Bai family, fancied her!
She refused to sleep with him, so Bai Xiuyuan threatened to send his man to kill her husband!
In the end, the ghost in red gave birth to his son. Bai Xiuyuan was so delighted that he accidentally divulged her husband’s death!
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at the ghost somewhat pitifully.
The ghost suddenly coldly laughed when she caught the look of pity in the white cat’s eyes. Then she laughed cruelly and continued, “I couldn’t live under the same skies as my husband’s murderer, so I plotted to seek revenge on Bai Xiuyuan! I want him to have a taste of losing his loved ones! I snuck his son out when he wasn’t looking and abandoned him in the old temple for him to fend for himself!”
“Haha! Did you know? He kept crying when I left him at the temple! I pulled off each finger when he kept clutching my sleeves,” said the female ghost as she smiled to Cheng Xiaoxiao and described the scenario in detail.
However, her tears had already revealed how reluctant and agonized she was.
“He was innocent,” said Cheng Xiaoxiao deeply and reminded her, “He was your kid too.”
The smile on the female ghost’s face instantly broke, and sheer sadness surged into her eyes.
“No, he wasn’t! He was Bai Xiuyuan’s son!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao watched as the ghost kept lying to herself and said, “What did you do after throwing your son at the temple?”
“After leaving him at the abandoned temple, I went to the Bai residence right away! I couldn’t wait to see the look on Bai Xiuyuan’s face when he learned his boy was missing!” said the ghost in red hysterically to Cheng Xiaoxiao.
“You…” Cheng Xiaoxiao went speechless when she heard the ghost’s actions.
The ghost in red said viciously with her eyes red, “He quickly realized his son was gone! He immediately sent a search party! He even got the local officials to help. After many days, the boy was nowhere to be seen! I deliberately told him that I killed him and tossed his body in an unmarked grave when he was physically and mentally exhausted.”
The female ghost in red instantly madly laughed before she continued in a deep tone, “You should have seen him. His face turned green instantly before he strangled me nonstop!”
The ghost held her throat. “He held onto my throat hard like this, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it! Haha! In the end, he let go of me and imprisoned me with chains around my ankles! He said it didn’t matter if the kid died! He would impregnate me with another! He was crazy! He was such a lunatic!”
The female ghost yanked her hair hard and glared at the spirit tablets scattered all over the ground in the ancestral hall.
“Everyone in the Bai residence knew that their third young master imprisoned me, but not a soul helped me! No matter how hard I begged the servants who sent me food, they turned a blind eye! All of them chose to help that monstrous Bai Xiuyuan! So I killed them all after I became a malicious spirit!”
The ghost in red laughed hysterically. “They became wandering spirits after they died, and I made a sumptuous meal of them all.”
“Did… did you devour them all?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at the female ghost in red with her hair scattered. Cheng Xiaoxiao couldn’t understand why she hated Bai Xiuyuan so much that she could go insane.
