Chapter 50 A malicious spirit dressed in red
Cheng Xiaoxiao pricked her ears to listen hard when she got to the window sill.
The servant keeping watch over her wasn’t outside the window, so Cheng Xiaoxiao jumped and darted out the window. Then she ran swiftly and disappeared around the corner.
She reached her head out slightly and looked into Chu Yunshen’s room boldly to discover the servant looking up into the sky while he leaned against a pillar. A look of longing was written all over his face.
Cheng Xiaoxiao frowned. Was the servant standing there wishing for rain?
Cheng Xiaoxiao pondered as she walked over to the kitchen. She jumped into the kitchen and stole two chicken drumsticks when the kitchen help wasn’t looking.
Since the chicken drumsticks were oily, Chu Yunshen would definitely find out if she placed them inside her garments. That was the last thing Cheng Xiaoxiao wanted.
Cheng Xiaoxiao craned her neck out from behind the firewood to see the female kitchen cooks chatting happily without realizing that two chicken drumsticks had gone missing from the plate.
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at a table nearby and saw a few pieces of clean white dishtowels stacked on them.
She placed the chicken drumsticks down before zipping over and jumping on the table.
Then she raised her paws to hook a dishtowel with her sharp claws.
Cheng Xiaoxiao instantly darted behind the pile of firewood after she was done. She spread the dishtowel flat on the ground with her paws before placing the chicken drumsticks on it. Then she rolled it up and stuffed it under her garments.
After Cheng Xiaoxiao was done, she immediately jumped out from the kitchen window.
Cheng Xiaoxiao pondered as she ran to the dog hole.
Would the stray dogs still loiter outside the alley after she spent two days at home?
Cheng Xiaoxiao wasn’t in a hurry to leave after she wriggled out of the dog hole. Instead, she craned her neck out and looked into the alley.
A few dark silhouettes blocked the hole with a swish.
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s legs went limp, and she leaned against the wall of the hole hastily.
“Woof woof!”
Then the deep sound of dog barking came to her ears.
Cheng Xiaoxiao turned her head around to discover it was just the stray dogs.
“Meow.”
Hush now.
Cheng Xiaoxiao covered her mouth with her paw and gestured for these noisy stray dogs to keep it down.
If anyone else noticed, she would be in trouble.
The stray dogs seemed to understand Cheng Xiaoxiao’s gesture and surprisingly lay down outside the dog hole without making a peep.
Cheng Xiaoxiao pulled out the chicken drumsticks hidden under her clothes and opened the dishtowel.
None of the stray dogs moved a muscle while they kept staring hard at the chicken drumsticks in front of Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Cheng Xiaoxiao knew these stray dogs must have gotten their fair share of beating.
So they usually picked food from the trash or waited for someone else to hand it to them.
Cheng Xiaoxiao stuffed her mouth full with the chicken drumsticks. Then she walked over towards the dogs and placed the food before them.
“Meow.”
Eat up.
They would get to have meat today!
The moment she placed the chicken drumsticks before them, the stray dogs instantly lunged towards them.
Fortunately, none of them fought over the food and took one bite after another among themselves and quickly wiped out the chicken drumsticks.
Although she knew that two chicken drumsticks were barely enough for them as an appetizer, she was too small. If she took too much food, she would probably get caught before she made it out of the dog hole.
Cheng Xiaoxiao waved goodbye to the stray dogs before heading out the alley.
Cheng Xiaoxiao swiftly halted when she made it out of the alley. Then she closed her eyes and chanted in her heart, “Hear my order, jade pendant and open my eyes.”
The moment she finished chanting, she opened her eyes and scoured the place for potential spots to catch wandering spirits.
Since she went to an abandoned temple in the city’s northern suburbs previously, she ought to go to the south side this time.
She could tell that there were wandering spirits aplenty there.
Cheng Xiaoxiao followed her third eye’s directions and headed towards an abandoned temple there. However, the jade pendant on her neck suddenly felt hot before long, so she halted in her steps and lowered her head to look at it.
A faint yellow light cat flickering nonstop from the jade pendant.
Cheng Xiaoxiao touched the pendant with her paw curiously. Was it broken or something?
She hooked it with her claws and raised it to take a good look.
Then an image of some dilapidated residence flashed from the jade pendant.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was clueless. Although she was aware that the jade pendant could detect mysterious things, she didn’t know why it suddenly showed her that rundown residence!
She hung the jade pendant back onto her neck and hurried over to gather spirits without putting much thought into the image.
Or else, she would be in trouble if she couldn’t get home before Chu Yunshen did.
After taking barely a couple of steps, the dilapidated residence before her caught her attention.
It looked familiar and seemed to be the one that the jade pendant had just shown her.
Its entrance was covered with cobwebs while a plaque hung over its door frame with the words: Bai Residence.
The tall walls that once stood were in shambles, but the family’s previous glory remained clear.
Just standing outside the residence, Cheng Xiaoxiao could sense the intense and ghastly air from inside.
She scanned the residence with her third eye. Other than a female spirit dressed in red floating around, there were no other wandering spirits.
When she was a child, she heard that people who died in red garments would transform into malicious spirits.
It would be safer for her to catch wandering spirits at the abandoned temple instead.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was about to leave when a yellow light suddenly shot out of the jade pendant.
Then the tightly shut Bai residence doors open with a thud.
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s fur instantly stood erect.
The place was haunted even in broad daylight!
Cheng Xiaoxiao was so startled that she retreated by a few meters swiftly. Then a thought crossed her mind. No, this was wrong. Why should she be afraid if she was here to catch ghosts?
Since the jade pendant led her here, she would go in for a look.
Cheng Xiaoxiao pondered while she mustered her courage and walked into the Bai residence.
After all, there was only one single ghost in red. Why should she be afraid of her if she was the Netherworld’s part-time ghost-catcher?
In any case, it wouldn’t take up much of her time. She would just do a good deed since she was such a kind soul.
After Cheng Xiaoxiao climbed up the steps and went into the Bai residence, the bright sun suddenly went dim.
An evil and sinister wind suddenly gusted from the main hall.
All the fallen leaves in the courtyard instantly swirled wildly.
The sound of a woman sobbing tragically rang by her ears.
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s scalp instantly went numb. She pulled the fallen leaves from her eyes and spat the dust that she swallowed earlier.
Her eyes quickly scoured the residence for the whereabouts of the female spirit.
There were cobwebs hanging everywhere in the residence, its furniture was in chaos, and there was even a large hole in the roof.
No wonder all the dust. It appeared that this residence had been abandoned for centuries.
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s eyes suddenly halted at a dried-up well in the backyard.
A female ghost in red sat on the well, combing her hair with her back facing Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Her long black hair cascaded down to her neck while she combed it intermittently with her long gnarly nails.
Thoughts of leaving crossed Cheng Xiaoxiao’s mind when her eyes hovered over her dark nails.
She had caught many ghosts, but she had never seen any spirits with black nails.
No matter how dumb Cheng Xiaoxiao was, she was keenly aware these black nails were indication that the spirit’s nature had changed.
So this female spirit in red would certainly be a tough catch.
And she might even perish in the process!
Just as Cheng Xiaoxiao was about to leave, she appeared at the old well the moment she took a step.
Did the ghost trap her here?
She wanted to leave their residence. How did she end up coming here?
A beautiful singing voice suddenly came from in front of her. It was the voice of the female spirit sitting on top of the well. Her voice was mellow and sweet and seemed to be singing a folk tune.
A leaf landed on Cheng Xiaoxiao’s head, and she swiftly trembled as she came to her senses. How could she have gotten enchanted by her singing?
It was simply too strange!
She had better flee before the female spirit noticed her.
Cheng Xiaoxiao turned to go, but the moment she took a step, a pair of red embroidered shoes floated before her eyes.
She shivered and looked up to see the female ghost in red smiling at her sinisterly with blood all over her face.
“It has been a long time since anything alive came into the residence. Although you are too small to make a full meal, it beats eating tree bark and roots. You taste…” said the female ghost as she reached her unnaturally long tongue out and smacked her lips, “… much better.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s head rang instantly in chaos. Then she turned to escape!
Oh God!
This female ghost wanted to eat her!
What should she do now?
Cheng Xiaoxiao could no longer recall what brought her to the residence. Instead, she kept running around it aimlessly.
The female ghost didn’t apprehend her immediately and treated it as though it was a game of catch. She kept chasing behind Cheng Xiaoxiao as she said sinisterly, “Run… go on and run… firm meat tastes better.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao kept cursing the spirit behind her while she ran!
She was such a vile female spirit!
Cheng Xiaoxiao was just thinking about helping her reincarnate, so she didn’t have to stay here.
Instead, she wanted to eat her!
Cheng Xiaoxiao ran until she reached a place that seemed like an ancestral hall. Then she suddenly realized she had nowhere to run as the ghost was standing behind her.
She was cornered and didn’t know what to do.
Then a thought emerged in her mind.
Wait a second!
Cheng Xiaoxiao suddenly recalled she came into the Bai residence to catch ghosts and wasn’t here to get chased around by a spirit.
The female spirit’s sinister laughter came from behind nonstop, “Run… Go on and run…”
Cheng Xiaoxiao swiftly turned to look at the ghost in red floating in midair as a murderous aura radiated from her red and brown eyes.
First, she couldn’t let the ghost outdo her in spirit!
“Little fellow, if you keep looking at me this way…”
The spirit stuck her tongue out and licked her poised fingers. Then she looked at Cheng Xiaoxiao with piercing coldness and continued, “I can’t resist digging your heart out for a taste.”
The moment she finished her sentence, the female spirit pounced onto Cheng Xiaoxiao. Cheng Xiaoxiao jumped onto the tables with spirit tablets on them before looking at the ghost again with fear lingering in her heart still.
“Wait!” shouted Cheng Xiaoxiao hastily.
The female spirit in red hung in midair as she stared at Cheng Xiaoxiao dumbstruck. “Can you speak?”
“Yes, I can.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao stared at her warily while she gasped secretly. She had to be prepared to run anytime.
“Were you the one who caught all the wandering spirits in the abandoned temple north of the city? Are you Granny Cat Demon?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao almost fell off the table in shock when she heard what the ghost said. One of the ghosts at that temple asked who she was, so she randomly came up with a nickname.
And she didn’t expect it to spread all the way here.
Didn’t she catch all the ghosts at that abandoned temple?
How did this female ghost come to know?
“Yes, I did. Are you afraid now?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her head proudly and acted viciously. “I can catch you all with just a wave of my finger!”
