Lose My Heart to the Lovely Kitten Princess - Chapter 49
Chapter 49 Ghost Stories
“Yes, Master!” replied Xiaowu. Before he left, he caught sight of the baby bird from the corner of his eye while the silk gauze completely entangled it. He couldn’t help frowning. Didn’t pets resemble their owners?
Why did the baby bird resemble that cat less and less as it grew up?
It was so dumb that it got itself completely tangled like a cocoon.
Xiaowu walked over and bent over to pick the baby bird up, and undid the silk gauze it was tangled in.
“Chirp chirp!”
The baby bird immediately chirped at Xiaowu happily the moment it regained freedom.
Xiaowu lifted the baby bird and quickly put it back inside the cage. Then he immediately got the kitchen to send food for the prince.
After they had dinner, Chu Yunshen told Xiaowu to prepared a big box of books for Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Cheng Xiaoxiao watched as a few servants carried a large box into the room.
Then Xiaowu opened the box and placed all the books on the ground in front of Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at the books lying the closest to her. They were all history and biography books along the lines of ‘Ghost Stories’, ‘Ghost Stories Part Two’, ‘Legends’, ‘Secret History’, and ‘Unusual Things’.
In comparison to the books she read today, these books were far more intriguing.
“Here you go!” Xiaowu carried the lion cat with one hand while he held a cushion with the other. Then he walked up to Chu Yunshen’s study table and placed the cushion in the same spot Cheng Xiaoxiao was sitting earlier. “This is where you will read from now on.”
Xiaowu placed Cheng Xiaoxiao on the cushion and walked back to retrieve the book, ‘Ghost Stories’, which Cheng Xiaoxiao was reading moments ago and put it in front of her.
A maid came in and placed a cup of tea before Cheng Xiaoxiao. Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at the teacup, the cushion beneath her, and the book in front of her. For the first time in her life, it didn’t seem half bad to be a cat.
It rained for two days in a row, so Cheng Xiaoxiao spent her days sitting in the room and reading those books that Chu Yunshen had gotten her.
Chu Yunshen and Xiaowu kept leaving the residence first thing in the morning.
They seemed to have something important to deal with.
And both left in a hurry each morning.
Perhaps they were getting ready for the victory party?
The victory dinner would be taking place in a few days.
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at the gloomy skies outside. She sure hoped it would be a sunny day tomorrow. When was she going to collect enough spiritual power to transform into a human being if she kept sitting in the room?
There was only enough spiritual power in the jade pendant to sustain the transformation for two minutes. She would probably revert into a cat before she even had the time to finish a bun.
At the thought, Cheng Xiaoxiao let go of the book, which fell onto the floor with a thud.
She turned to jump onto the window sill. The servant in charge of keeping an eye on her was still sitting on the steps and looking at the rain.
He was so startled when he suddenly caught sight of the cat beside him that he jumped up. Then he reached both his arms out to block Cheng Xiaoxiao’s path and said, “You… you can’t run off!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced at him before curling up on the steps to look at the dark skies nonstop. When was this rain going to stop?
What if it went on until the victory dinner?
There was no such thing as weather forecast in ancient times.
So she could only sit here and watch on in despair.
The servant noticed the lion cat had no intention of running and merely sat on the steps obediently staring at the rain.
He recalled the cat curling up on the window sill doing the same thing the moment it started raining yesterday.
“Do you like rainy weather?” The servant was relieved and instantly became talkative. “I always liked rainy days. Before I started working for Prince Jing…”
Cheng Xiaoxiao finally couldn’t help rolling her eyes at the servant 15 minutes later. However, he talked incessantly about how much he used to enjoy admiring the rain in the past.
Why was this servant so talkative?
What made him think that she liked it when it rained?
She was clearly sitting here waiting for the rain to cease, okay?
The servant immediately beamed at the white cat when he caught sight of her rolling her eyes at him. “Wouldn’t it be great if the rain could go on forever?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao stood up and walked about three meters away from the servant before she sat down and continued looking at the sky.
Oh God!
Could you please stop raining?
Why couldn’t it rain after the victory dinner instead?
The servant was so startled when the lion cat got up that he hastily stood up too. However, the cat merely walked several steps away before sitting down to stare into the sky.
So he eventually sat back down.
The damp gentle breeze swept towards them every now and then. The raindrops trickled down from the roof onto the bluestone floor and pitter-pattered melodiously.
The moment Chu Yunshen and Xiaowu got back to the residence, they saw the little fellow sitting side by side with her guard on the steps looking at the sky.
The servant instantly stood up and paid his respects to Chu Yunshen when he heard footsteps behind him.
“Your Highness.”
“Mhm.”
Chu Yunshen looked at him for a second before he turned his gaze on the cat curled up on the steps.
The servant immediately left when Xiaowu gestured for him to go.
Cheng Xiaoxiao had already known Chu Yunshen and Xiaowu was back before the servant even stood up.
After waiting on the steps all day, the rain showed no signs of breaking. Instead, it poured even harder. The gods certainly did her no favors.
She was so dejected that all she wanted to do was to lie there motionlessly.
Chu Yunshen had stood there for some time. Usually, the little fellow would pounce into his arms the moment he came home, but she shockingly didn’t move this time.
Since her lashes were moving, she was clearly awake.
Master, the little fellow seems sad,” commented Xiaowu from behind Chu Yunshen.
Chu Yunshen glanced at Xiaowu, who immediately went quiet.
“What’s the matter?”
Chu Yunshen bent over to pull the somewhat cold cat into his arms and noticed how sad and dispirited she looked.
He swiftly recalled from the ‘Approaches to Cats’ that cats required companionship.
He had left her at home for a few days while he was busy preparing for the victory dinner.
Was the little fellow angry?
But she seemed happy enough when he came home a few days ago.
“I’ll keep you company tomorrow and won’t go anywhere.”
Chu Yunshen carried the lion cat into the room to see the book, ‘Ghost Stories’, sitting open on the table barely read.
He lowered his head to look at the white cat and said calmly after glancing in the direction of the study desk, “If you don’t like that book, I’ll get Xiaowu to change it.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao glanced towards the book on the table and immediately shook her head nonstop.
“Meow.”
No.
That book was quite interesting. She had just started reading it and was planning to continue tomorrow if it kept raining.
Chu Yunshen looked at the cat in his arms while she shook her head. Then he touched her head gently. “I won’t touch it then.”
“Meow.”
Good.
Then Cheng Xiaoxiao lay back into Chu Yunshen’s embrace dejectedly.
Before long, the kitchen sent dinner over.
Cheng Xiaoxiao kept eyeing the delicacies sitting in front of Chu Yunshen.
Was the rain going to clear up tomorrow?
If she could have a feast during the victory dinner, then all the effort she put into ghost-catching wouldn’t go to waste.
Cheng Xiaoxiao curled up on the cushion and continued reading, ‘Ghost Stories’, Chu Yunshen sat next to her at the desk reading military books while the baby bird fell into a deep slumber in its cage.
The atmosphere in the room was particularly relaxed.
The sound of the rain’s pitter-patter came from outside as the damp air wafted into the room.
By the time Chu Yunshen sipped some tea, the little fellow had already fallen asleep on the cushion.
Since he was almost done with the book, he finished it before he closed it and stood up.
He carried the little fellow gently and walked slowly into the room.
Why did the cat get sleepy so easily of late?
Didn’t she used to play a lot until late at night before she was willing to sleep?
Chu Yunshen bent over and wanted to place the cat next to the pillow. He wanted to help the little fellow undress before he headed back to his desk to read.
However, the moment he stood up, the little fellow hooked his robe with her sharp claws.
Chu Yunshen grabbed her paws and wanted to unhook them from his robe.
But Cheng Xiaoxiao instinctively held on even more tightly.
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s claws were ruining chu Yunshen’s perfectly good silk robe.
Chu Yunshen looked at the little fellow helplessly while she slept nonstop. He could only remove his robe.
“Meow.”
After Chu Yunshen took off his robe, he attempted to save his robe from her clutches. However, the little fellow surprisingly let go of it.
If Chu Yunshen weren’t certain that the little fellow was fast asleep, even he would wonder whether she was being mischievous.
Chu Yunshen lost all interest to read by now, so he raised his hand to undo the bell on Cheng Xiaoxiao’s ankle before asking the servant to bring him a basin of water.
The servants left with the used basin of water along with the lion cat’s clothing 15 minutes later.
Chu Yunshen sat in bed watching the lion cat, who was fast asleep, and raised his hand to touch her head gently a few times. He wasn’t going to leave her alone at home anymore after the victory dinner.
He couldn’t afford to bring her along these past few days because he was worried that someone was watching him.
In a few more days, he could spend quality time with her.
The sun shone brightly when Cheng Xiaoxiao finally woke up from her deep slumber.
She lowered her head to see she was dressed in a blue outfit with the bell fastened to her ankle.
It appeared that ghost-catching for a few days in a row was paying a toll on her. Even after resting for two days in a room, she couldn’t curb herself from falling asleep the moment she was tired.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked around the room to see that Chu Yunshen was long gone.
The sun beamed onto the bluestone tiles and gave the room a gold hue.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was so delighted that she leaped out of bed, setting off the bell on her paw. She darted onto the window sill to see that the weather was perfect and the sky was blue.
She immediately meowed in joy.
Perfect! The rain stopped!
“Morning.”
The servant who kept guard over her at all times emerged from around the corner quietly.
Cheng Xiaoxiao went back into the room the moment she saw him.
After the maid came with breakfast, she would leave the residence to catch wandering spirits when she was done eating.
Cheng Xiaoxiao jumped onto the table with the baby bird’s cage the moment the maid left. She lowered her head to remove the bell from her ankle with her claws and threw it into the baby bird’s cage.
“Chirp chirp!”
The baby bird hopped before the lion cat and chirped at Cheng Xiaoxiao nonstop.
Cheng Xiaoxiao raised her paw and prodded the bell inside the cage. The baby bird immediately pecked the bell joyfully.
Cheng Xiaoxiao finally felt comfortable enough to turn and jump onto the ground when she heard the bell ringing.
