Chapter 192 Dancing under the moonlight
Cheng Xiaoxiao was startled by her imagination. After all, Wan Xia seemed to be the mastermind for now. If they found out someone else was behind everything, Chu Yunshen would remain in grave danger.
Even if they had apprehended Wan Xia for now, who’s to say there wouldn’t be more to come?
Moreover, they didn’t know what Wan Xia’s true intentions were at all. Did she simply want to seduce Chu Yunshen, become his woman, and gain power in the residence?
Was she planning to get Chu Yunshen to do things for her after becoming his woman?
Cheng Xiaoxiao knew this was a particularly serious matter. She continued pretending to listen to this story engrossingly as she thought about how to tell Chu Yunshen about this.
No matter how Cheng Xiaoxiao felt about this, it was better to be safe than sorry.
Wan Xia didn’t notice anything amiss with the lion cat, so she simply continued with her story.
“She was my only family and we have always been together. She ended up getting taken away and Xiao Qin was sent over to take care of me.”
The moment the subject of Xiao Qin came up, Cheng Xiaoxiao and Wan Xia looked sad.
“Xiao Qin was such a silly lass. I simply had no choice. I needed to protect something, so I had to do it.”
Wan Xia’s voice started to sound surreal again. She stood out like a sore thumb inside the jail cell.
Cheng Xiaoxiao even had a feeling Wan Xia didn’t belong here and might leave any moment. She would never be able to see this woman with whom she had a love-hate relationship.
Cheng Xiaoxiao took a few steps towards Wan Xia before finally stopping in front of her.
“If those things didn’t happen to me and nothing happened in the residence, you, me, Xiao Yun, and Xiao Qin can probably become as close as sisters.”
The moment Wan Xia finished her sentence, she did not go on. Cheng Xiaoxiao was standing in front of her and could only hear her weak breathing.
Cheng Xiaoxiao pondered briefly before using her paw to pat Wan Xia.
She also wanted to give Wan Xia a hug, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
Wan Xia had hurt her in more ways than one. She wasn’t the female lead of a melodrama who could gracefully forgive Wan Xia and Chu Yunshen.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was simply a nobody. Also, she was very vindictive for what it was worth.
She had to admit she was very moved by Wan Xia’s story and Wan Xia was a good storyteller, but this was only enough to make her feel moved. It simply wasn’t enough for them to be friends.
The second she saw Wan Xia and Chu Yunshen in the room alone almost naked, they were still friends.
After she found out Wan Xia had deceived her and had been using her, she still considered her a friend.
However, the moment she saw the unperturbed expression on Wan Xia’s face when she accused Xiao Qin, Cheng Xiaoxiao knew that her friendship with Wan Xia was over.
Wan Xia had no boundaries. Or rather, Cheng Xiaoxiao didn’t have the confidence to have higher status in Wan Xia’s heart.
Xiao Qin and Wan Xia had grown up together while Cheng Xiaoxiao had contributed to her younger sister’s death.
How could she expect to remain Wan Xia’s friend?
Cheng Xiaoxiao certainly could not do it, so she felt Wan Xia probably felt the same way.
Cheng Xiaoxiao didn’t dare think about how much Wan Xia genuinely wanted to befriend her. In any case, Cheng Xiaoxiao was unable to quantify it.
The lion cat gradually patted Wan Xia on the back of her hand. She finally noticed the cuts on Wan Xia’s flawless hands. The blood had already dried up into cakes of dark red blood.
Did the sprinters on the wooden bars do this earlier?
The lion cat’s paws halted on the back of Wan Xia’s hand as Wan Xia looked at the lion cat quietly.
No one said a word until Wan Xia turned her head first and removed the lion cat’s paw.
The emptiness under Cheng Xiaoxiao’s paws reminded her of her mission here. She was here to help visit Wan Xia on behalf of Xiao Qin. However, Cheng Xiaoxiao got distracted when Wan Xia suddenly told Cheng Xiaoxiao her life story. On the surface, it certainly seemed that way.
The lion cat wrote on the ground, “Xiao Qin asked me to come and visit.” She waved her paw and gestured for Wan Xia to read her writing.
Wan Xia didn’t seem surprised when the lion cat was able to write. She acted as though it was the most mundane thing ever.
Wan Xia kept asking the lion cat, “Where is Xiao Qin? Is she unwilling to see me? Why didn’t she come?”
The lion cat shook her head at Wan Xia. She pondered before she continued to write, “I don’t know why she refused to come, but she is waiting for me at the door.”
The moment Wan Xia heard Xiao Qin was at the door, her eyes lit up. However, it was very brief and quickly disappeared since the lion cat also mentioned Xiao Qin’s refusal to enter the prison.
“Did she refuse to come in because she doesn’t want to see me?”
Wan Xia squeezed out a smile with great difficulty. It was such a sad smile that Cheng Xiaoxiao could not bring herself to continue looking at her.
“That makes sense. After all, I have done great injustice to her. If she doesn’t want to forgive me, I get it. People like me deserve to go to hell.”
Wan Xia muttered in self-ridicule with sadness on her face.
The atmosphere felt particularly intense to Cheng Xiaoxiao and she had trouble breathing, so she did not want to hang around a second longer.
Why did she promise Xiao Qin she would come in at Xiao Qin’s request?
Cheng Xiaoxiao asked herself the same question for the Nth time. She had trouble breathing and it felt as though she was stuck in a stiflingly airtight room.
“Just stop thinking about it. I have to go.”
After Cheng Xiaoxiao hastily wrote on the ground, she wriggled out from between the wooden poles. This time, she thankfully did not get stuck and everything went smoothly.
“Help me tell Xiao Qin I am sorry. Also, please thank her for me.”
Wan Xia’s voice came from behind as Cheng Xiaoxiao left. Cheng Xiaoxiao couldn’t help feeling teary-eyed.
She did not get it. Since Wan Xia was an evil woman, why couldn’t she stick to being completely evil?
Before she was imprisoned, she wanted Xiaowu to let off Xiao Yue. Now, she was feeling sorry for killing Xiao Qin.
Would a villain do this?
Also, did she have to say so much to the lion cat who had contributed to her little sister’s death?
Cheng Xiaoxiao never wanted to learn of this. She didn’t want to hear what Wan Xia had to say.
After leaving the prison, Cheng Xiaoxiao felt very dejected. No matter how Xiao Qin asked about it, she refused to answer her. The atmosphere between them was rather genial when they came to the prison, but now it felt depressing.
The prison went quiet with the departure of the lion cat.
The moon outside the skylight seemed to have gotten a little brighter as it scattered down on Wan Xia’s face.
The tears on Wan Xia’s face had already dried up. Her bright beautiful eyes were filled with a profound sadness well beyond her years.
“The moon looks beautiful.”
Wan Xia sighed in her heart as she looked out the skylight. She quickly veered her eyes and slowly pushed herself off the damp ground.
There was blood and dirt on her hands, but she used her damn handkerchief to wipe them clean. She wiped every finger on her hands particularly personally as though she were performing an important ritual.
It was the same handkerchief she had used to dry her tears previously. She did not make a peep when she cleaned her wounded hands. Instead, she simply found a little and stopped briefly before she continued.
After finally cleaning the dirt off her hands with great difficulty, Wan Xia folded the handkerchief neatly and placed it back in her chest.
She proceeded to straighten out her hair and hold it to one side before using her fingers to straighten them out.
After she was done with her hair, Wan Xia straighten out her clothes. Previously, she had randomly put on her robes and secured the straps in a hurry. This time, she undid all the straps and tied them together correctly. Finally, she pulled her garments straight to remove the wrinkles.
Wan Xia finally stopped when everything was set. She raised her head and looked at the moon and inexplicably cried.
“Don’t cry. If you cry, you won’t look beautiful anymore. If you cry, he won’t want you.”
Wan Xia sensed warm tears on her face, so she randomly wiped them with her hands. She patted her cheeks gently and did her utmost to squeeze out a gentle smile.
She kept gazing at the moon, but this time, she did not cry anymore.
Wan Xia removed the single hairpin on her head and twisted it gently. The hairpin quickly split into two pieces and the section below was surprisingly hollow.
Wan Xia held up the hollowed section of the hairpin, turned it over and a small red pill shockingly appeared in her hand.
“It is time.”
The moonlight outside the window became even brighter. Wan Xia’s face glowed faintly under the moonlight.
Wan Xia quickly put the pill in her mouth without hesitation and tilted her head back to swallow it.
She swallowed the pill, capped the hairpin back on, and pinned it onto her hair.
Wan Xia started dancing at the tiny skylight.
“Bless the East wind…” Wan Xia danced as she sang in a melodious voice, “May I hold your hand once more. May you live in mountains and rivers in peace…”
The song was so tragic that Wan Xia could not help crying as she sang.
