Lose My Heart to the Lovely Kitten Princess - Chapter 15
Chapter 15 Part-time ghost catcher
“Miss Cheng, don’t overthink it. This was a mere accident,” said Hei Wuchang as he smiled and quietly stood up from his seat in his suit and floated to Cheng Xiaoxiao.
“Another accident?”
The last time they told her there was an accident, it turned her from a human being into a cat. Was there another accident again this time?
Just the thought alone made Cheng Xiaoxiao’s back sweat profusely.
“There’s nothing to fear, Miss Cheng Xiaoxiao. It’s nothing major this time,” Bai Wuchang’s distinct cold voice rang softly from behind her.
A coldness crept up Cheng Xiaoxiao’s neck and made her shiver. She hastily turned to glare angrily at him as she said, “Friend, it’s very ungentlemanly of you to appear from behind suddenly…” Then Cheng Xiaoxiao swallowed her words at the sight of the hamburger, fried chicken, cola, and popcorn on the tray in Bai Wuchang’s hand, “Ah, Is Brother Wuchang getting ready for supper? You sure work hard.”
“Has Miss Cheng Xiaoxiao eaten?”
Bai Wuchang beamed and looked warmly at Cheng Xiaoxiao as he kept moving the tray in front of her.
“I’ve already eaten!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao stared at the hamburger. The moment she saw the plate of hamburger and fried chicken, her mind already crashed, so she only nodded mechanically.
“Have you eaten already? That’s too bad,” said Bai Wuchang as he smiled cheekily with a sorry look on his face.
Cheng Xiaoxiao suddenly came to her senses and realized what she had said. Then she instantly shook her head like a rattle and said, “No, I haven’t eaten yet!”
But Bai Wuchang sadly didn’t hear her and had already brought the tray over to his desk. Then he said, “Xiao Hei, here’s your burger, fried chicken and cola.”
“Great, thanks!”
Hei Wuchang swiftly floated back behind his desk and elegantly took the tray from Bai Wuchang.
Cheng Xiaoxiao watched as Hei Wuchang, dressed in his classy suit, placed the food on the table, and opened the hamburger packaging unhurriedly. In her heart, the glutton in her couldn’t wait to lunge over and snatch the food and gobble everything up.
Lunge?
It looks like she had been a cat for so long that she forgot what it was like to be a human.
Just as Hei Wuchang’s slender fingers were about to send the burger to his mouth, Cheng Xiaoxiao suddenly interrupted, “Wait…”
Cheng Xiaoxiao was on the verge of drooling. She hadn’t eaten hamburgers and fried chicken for so long that it nearly killed. But when Hei Wuchang looked up perplexedly, she swallowed her saliva and said uneasily, “Slow down. It’s hot.”
Hei Wuchang curved his lips into a smile and said, “Don’t worry, Miss. The hamburger is completely cool. I was planning to eat it earlier, but there was a big case, so we only managed to sneak a bite now.”
“Can you eat more, Miss? I think we bought too much food.” Bai Wuchang took a Big Mac from the tray and handed it to Cheng Xiaoxiao. He smiled so gently that it felt like a cool breeze sweeping across a lake on a sunny day.
“Yes, I can! I can finish everything even!” replied Cheng Xiaoxiao as she took the Big Mac. At first, she wanted to uphold a ladylike image with the handsome Hei Wuchang and Bai Wuchang around, but now that there was food, Cheng Xiaoxiao’s foodie nature undoubtedly emerged instantly.
Hei Wuchang and Bai Wuchang eyed each other. Xiao Bai was right about bribing Cheng Xiaoxiao with food. After offering her food, she was bound to become well-disposed towards their suggestion.
Bai Wuchang understood what Hei Wuchang was trying to say, so he smiled knowingly.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was Su City’s competitive eating champion after all. After wiping out all things edible in front of her like a whirlwind, she realized that she had accidentally finished Hei Wuchang’s supper as she was blinded by excitement.
Hei Wuchang stared dumbstruck at Cheng Xiaoxiao’s spirit. Cheng Xiaoxiao’s smooth and silky hair fell to her waist. She had lovely long slender brows, big eyes that glinted like stars, a dainty nose, a natural blush, cherry lips, and a snow-white oval-shaped face. Cheng Xiaoxiao was particularly elegant and refined, especially when she was dressed in this pure white long dress.
But when she ate…
Hei Wuchang lowered his head and glanced at the empty hamburger wrapper in his hands. Then he smiled Cheng Xiaoxiao awkwardly as he said, “Miss, you such are a fast eater.”
“I…I’m used to it,” said Cheng Xiaoxiao as she finished the cola and threw the empty cup into the trash can with a thud. Then she scratched her head awkwardly with her face blushing as she avoided Hei Wuchang’s teary eyes. She hadn’t eaten a burger in human form for so long that she couldn’t hold herself back.
But it was wrong of Cheng Xiaoxiao to finish their suppers…
“Sorry…I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…” said Cheng Xiaoxiao awkwardly as she lowered her head and rubbed her hands with her right foot tapping the floor gently.
“It’s okay. We are used to going without food.” The moment Bai Wuchang said this, Cheng Xiaoxiao felt even guiltier, and her face blushed like a ripe red apple.
“Okay, Xiao Hei. Time for business.”
Bai Wuchang gradually stood up in his white suit behind his office desk and gracefully went over to Xiaoxiao. Then his thin lips parted and curved up slightly as he said, “Miss Xiaoxiao, can you let me see the jade pendant?”
Jade pendant?
Cheng Xiaoxiao removed the jade pendant from her neck and asked, “Hey, why does green light keep flashing from the jade? Is it broken?”
Bai Wuchang took the jade from her. Then he shook his head composedly and said, “Don’t worry, Miss. This jade pendant has always belonged to the Netherworld and has never stayed out for so long, so it’s normal for it to encounter some changes.”
“Then what’s wrong with it?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao tipped her toes and looked at the jade pendant in Bai Wuchang’s hands curiously. It was emitting green light as an image of a stormy forest appeared on it.
“Ah!” Cheng Xiaoxiao suddenly stepped back in shock as she asked, “It that Huangquan Forest?”
“Yes, it is,” replied Bai Wuchang gently as he smiled.
“Then…then are those monsters zombies?” asked Cheng Xiaoxiao as she looked at the swarm of monsters in Huangquan Forest.
“Those are spirits of the dead who refuse to reincarnate. They are wandering spirits that end up attaching themselves to those rotting corpses as hosts.”
Bai Wuchang appeared warm as he flawlessly smiled as though they were chatting about some romantic anecdotes.
“Then why hasn’t the Netherworld sent anyone to catch those wandering spirits yet?” asked Cheng Xiaoxiao as she shrank behind Bai Wuchang and was too afraid to see those monsters in Huangquan Forest again.
“It can’t be helped since we are understaffed,” said Bai Wuchang. He shut his eyes and chanted something to the jade pendant, and the green light stopped flashing. Then he handed the jade pendant to Cheng Xiaoxiao and said, “Please take it, Miss.”
“No, I don’t want it anymore.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao was scared out of her wits by the jade pendant when it suddenly appeared before her and looked like it had gone back to normal. Then she retreated several steps and waved her hands at Bai Wuchang as she said, “This jade pendant is malfunctioning because it left the Netherworld for too long! What if it attracts ghosts one day? Since young, I have always been terrified of ghosts!”
“But we are both ghosts, so why aren’t you afraid of us?”
Hei Wuchang revealed his sharp teeth as he grinned.
Bai Wuchang glared at Hei Wuchang, and he put his pointy teeth away.
“You…you two are so handsome that I forgot to be frightened,” said Cheng Xiaoxiao in hindsight.
“Don’t worry, Miss. I have made the jade pendant go back to normal.”
“Who knows when it will break down again!” said Cheng Xiaoxiao as she frowned slightly, “Also, there are so many wandering spirits in Huangquan Forest. When are you going to catch them?”
“Miss, you know that the Netherworld is genuinely understaffed. Our workers have operated the Netherworld for hundreds of years without taking holidays. Just taking care of these registered spirits requires a staggering effort. How can we find the time to deal with nameless wandering spirits?”
When Bai Wuchang talked about them working ceaselessly without any breaks for hundreds of years, Cheng Xiaoxiao guiltily recalled how she just even wiped out Hei Wuchang’s supper. Then she became defeated, and her fury subsided substantially. They were not the ones to blame for the situation at Huangquan forest.
They were genuinely too busy.
“Then I’m sure you have time to help catch those wandering spirits now, right?”
She wondered if anything happened to Chu Yunshen and the others in Huangquan Forest after she lost consciousness.
“Miss Xiaoxiao, I’m so sorry, but our hands are full with a huge case now,” said Bai Wuchang Hei Wuchang as he smiled apologetically. Then he glanced at Bai Wuchang next to him.
Hei Wuchang caught Bai Wuchang’s drift. Then he chimed in as he took a contract from the cabinet, “Since we don’t have a suitable reincarnation slot for you yet and you have to stay on earth for a longer time, why don’t you consider working for the Netherworld? We are hiring part-time ghost catchers, and it comes with pretty good perks.”
“Ghost catcher?”
The sound of the occupation alone sounded scary, so Cheng Xiaoxiao shook her head nonstop.
“Miss, don’t you want to find out what benefits you can get from part-time ghost-catching?”
Bai Wuchang’s snow-white hair fluttered gently. His face was very fair, and a sacred glow radiated from it. He was indescribably stunning with the perfect combination of features and looked inconceivably flawless.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was distracted by his beauty, so she asked obediently, “What perks?”
“It’s all here.”
Hei Wuchang appeared out of nowhere from behind Cheng Xiaoxiao. Then he pointed at some details which were circled in red in the contract and said, “Why don’t you take a look for yourself and ask me if you have questions?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao took the contract from him and lowered her head to read it carefully.
Right at the top, the Netherworld was written using black ink in bold as the first party.
The line for the second party was blank instead and waiting to get filled.
Cheng Xiaoxiao briefly looked through the contract before her. Most of it was related to ghost-catching in particular. Then her eyes scanned through the document and paused at a section related to working hours and compensation, which was specially circled in red.
Only the newly dead who were waiting to reincarnate could apply for the ghost catcher role. The hired spirits could work any amount of time they desired. If they wanted to reincarnate, they could terminate the contract anytime.
Ghost catchers got paid based on their labor. The more ghosts she caught, the more compensation she received.
For each ghost she caught, she could add one more day to her lifespan in her next life. Also, the Netherworld guaranteed part-time ghost catchers good reincarnations.
Cheng Xiaoxiao found neither of these conditions appealing.
He Wuchang and Bai Wuchang had already promised her a good next life. When it came to her lifespan, she felt being able to live her life out and die peacefully was good enough.
She didn’t want to live so long that she ended up feeling like a demon.
Cheng Xiaoxiao lost all interest as she looked at it casually. Then her eyes suddenly lit up.
At the bottom of the contract, under employee benefits, it stated that the Netherworld would provide part-time ghost catchers with renowned cuisine that corresponded to each public holiday.
Hei Wuchang and Bai Wuchang looked at each other and smiled when they detected Cheng Xiaoxiao’s interest. In reality, they had already studied Cheng Xiaoxiao thoroughly and knew they would definitely succeed if food was involved.
Fine food!
Cheng Xiaoxiao’s gleamed.
Cheng Xiaoxiao Bai Wuchang
“What do you think, Miss?”
Bai Wuchang beamed as he handed the jade pendant to Cheng Xiaoxiao.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at the perk for renowned cuisine on the contract before looking at the jade pendant and slipped into a dilemma.
And Bai Wuchang looked at her patiently as he waited for her to decide.
