Chapter 138 Something wrong with Ming Zi
Butler Liu led the guard in. The guard’s face was pale as he kowtowed. “Greetings Your Highness and Sir Xiaowu, I am Wu Yong and I have something to report.”
Chu Yunshen noticed how anxious Wu Yong seemed and his forehead throbbed. However, he continued placing his jade pendant on his belt.
“Cut with the formalities and tell me what happened.”
Xiaowu felt anxious inside.
After all, Xiaowu was in charge of the case, so he was worried something might have gone wrong.
Also, Uncle Gen was missing, and only Wang Er and the others knew what happened. Xiaowu was naturally very cautious about them
“Sir, this morning, the dark man suddenly started convulsing. Now he is unconscious.”
The dark man?
Which dark man?
Was he talking about Ming Zi?
That didn’t sound right. Ming Zi was a brawny man. To be precise, he was even more well-built than the average burial worker. Otherwise, it was impossible for him to do such menial labor.
Ming Zi was simply not much of a talker. Also, he didn’t have any illnesses. Otherwise, Uncle Gen wouldn’t have hired him.
“Have you sent for a physician to see him?” Xiaowu calmly analyzed the situation, but he clearly sounded even more anxious.
“Yes, I have. The physician said he lacked Qi, blood, and had excessive Yin. He said he won’t survive for more than a week.”
After Wu Yong told them what was going on, he seemed worried that Chu Yunshen might get angry, so he hurriedly added, “We sent for a lot of physicians, but all of them gave the same diagnosis. They said he should have died a long time ago. Even though he survived, he won’t live for long.”
Why would a healthy man suddenly end up sick?
Was he poisoned?
It simply happened so suddenly, just when they were about to interrogate them today.
Xiaowu even suspected Uncle Gen was behind it.
The important thing now was to go to the justice department and see for themselves. After all, there was no point speculating.
The guard hurriedly wiped the sweat from his face before he said reverently, “Your Highness, those prisoners haven’t eaten anything since he was jailed, not even a drop of water…”.
Chu Yunshen looked solemn as he said mildly, “Let’s head over to the justice department first.”
They took the horse carriage and arrived at the justice department before long.
The moment they arrived at the jail, Cheng Xiaoxiao detected coldness in the air.
Sure enough, the jade pendant on Cheng Xiaoxiao’s neck gave off a green glow.
Were there ghosts here?
Cheng Xiaoxiao instantly got wary as she waited for the jade pendant to give her signs.
Something was in that room!
It was Ming Zi’s jail cell.
“Hear my order, jade pendant, and open my eyes.”
She wanted to find out what kind of demon was hiding in there!
Cheng Xiaoxiao struggled to go over to Ming Zi’s jail cell, but Chu Yunshen pressed her back into his arms.
“Behave!” Chu Yunshen flicked her forehead gently as punishment.
Xiaowu saw the lion cat’s actions and felt puzzled.
“How did the lion cat know we are interrogating him today?”
Chu Yunshen didn’t answer Xiaowu. Instead, he gestured for the guard to open the jail cell with the cat in his arms.
Xiaowu told the guard to open the jail cell door and entered to check on Ming Zi.
Wu Yong wasn’t lying. Ming Zi was curled up in the corner of the jail cell covered with a thick blanket.
Xiaowu felt Ming Zi was sicker than Wu Yong said.
He was frowning hard with his eyes closed and seemed to be in great pain.
His dark skin even looked ghastly pale as he trembled and seemed cold.
Why did he suddenly fall so sick?
“Get him two more blankets!”
Xiaowu reached his hand out to touch Ming Zi’s forehead. He expected it to be burning hot, but it was icy cold.
It didn’t feel humanly possible for someone to be so cold. Instead, he felt like a corpse from the unmarked burial gravesite.
Ming Zi undoubtedly looked abnormal. Xiaowu felt things were slipping out of his control.
The results of his investigations were incomplete and he had no idea where Uncle Gen had gone or why Ming Zi suddenly fell sick.
This could mean only one thing. He was missing something here.
Xiaowu wasted no time and quickly came out of the jail cell and reported the situation to Chu Yunshen, “Master, Ming Zi is in bad shape, something seems wrong.”
The moment Xiaowu entered the jail cell, Chu Yunshen quietly watched. He knew full well how serious things were becoming. After hearing Xiaowu’s report, he quickly nodded.
Xiaowu glanced at Ming Zi as he curled up in the corner and felt worried.
“Master, let me go in and take a look.”
“I will go with you.”
Chu Yunshen stood up as well. He flicked some random dust off his outer robe with one hand while he carried a snow-white lion cat in the other. His presence was a light in the dark and dismal jail cell.
The jail cell reeked with a stench, so Xiaowu handed Chu Yunshen a white handkerchief, but Chu Yunshen surprisingly didn’t take it.
“Master!”
Chu Yunshen didn’t belong in the jail cell. He had yet to recover fully and the conditions inside the jail cell were very poor. Also didn’t know what was going on with Ming Zi.
Xiaowu remained worried, so he handed Chu Yunshen the handkerchief again. “Master…”
“I’m fine.”
Even though Chu Yunshen turned down the handkerchief, he took it from Xiaowu this time.
The jail cell was very dark. Fortunately, Cheng Xiaoxiao was a cat, so she could see everything even more clearly than humans.
She scrutinized the jail cell before confirming there were no ghosts. An unknown man lay in the darkness as he gave off a dark smoke.
Sadly, Chu Yunshen and Xiaowu were unable to see this. From their perspective, Ming Zi was simply tanned.
Ming Zi was just quietly sitting by the corner of the jail cell in their eyes.
Just as Xiaowu was about to touch Ming Zi’s forehead again, Ming Zi suddenly opened his eyes when Xiaowu’s hand was about five centimeters from his forehead.
His eyes were simply shocking.
Even though Xiaowu was very experienced, Cheng Xiaoxiao who is detecting him retreated in shock.
Ming Zi’s eyes were not scary. But anyone would be instinctively shocked if someone suddenly opened their eyes.
Ming Zi was still staring at Xiaowu scarily. On scrutiny, he seemed to be looking at something else through Xiaowu in particular.
Xiaowu finally composed himself. Although he felt something was wrong with Ming Zi, he shook Ming Zi’s shoulder and asked, “How do you feel?”
However, Ming Zi seemed oblivious of the outside world as he continued staring ahead in a daze. His eye white had dwindled a lot. His pupils were so dark and large that they might fill his eyes completely anytime.
Xiaowu didn’t dare to touch Ming Zi. He was worried Ming Zi might pass out anytime.
Ming Zi finally showed signs of snapping out of his daze as he moved his lips and spoke inaudibly.
Xiaowu lowered his head and placed his ear close to Ming Zi’s mouth in an attempt to hear him.
Ming Zi suddenly went mad when Xiaowu came close to him. It was inexplicable how a weak man like him could find the strength.
Was he only pretending to be sick?
Oh no!
Danger!
“Meow!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao hurriedly cued Xiaowu to leave, but she was too late.
Xiaowu was too engrossed in trying to make out what Ming Zi was trying to say that Ming Zi struck Xiaowu’s hand as he placed it on Ming Zi’s shoulder.
Ming Zi wrested himself free from Xiaowu to stand up and charge right out of the jail cell.
Just as Ming Zi was about to reach Chu Yunshen, Chu Yunshen decisively kicked him to the ground. He moved as quickly as he did in the morning when he dodged Xiaowu, maybe even faster.
Xiaowu didn’t catch on to Ming Zi’s change when Ming Zi got agitated. Now he quickly apprehended Ming Zi while he was on the ground.
In reality, Chu Yunshen didn’t hold back on his kick. Normal people would be sprawling on the ground incapable of standing. Xiaowu wouldn’t even have to bother with apprehending them by now.
However, the most inconceivable thing happened right before their eyes.
Ming Zi stood up after he fell prone on the ground. It seemed as though Chu Yunshen didn’t kick him at all.
Why wasn’t he in pain?
Cheng Xiaoxiao was absolutely puzzled.
Although he was a strange man, he was human after all. How could he stand unscathed after that kick?
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at Ming Zi quizzically as he fought Xiaowu. Xiaowu was clearly clueless and shocked.
What happened? Ming Zi looked meek when he was arrested. Why did he suddenly have such a huge change in personality?
Did he want to go out?
“Master?”
Xiaowu pressed Ming Zi onto the ground with both hands. Ming Zi was very agitated and unstable. Also, the physicians said he didn’t have long to live.
Xiaowu turned to look at Chu Yunshen.
If things were as simple as what Wang Er and Li Erfa said, then Ming Zi didn’t matter.
However, they had no leads for the case of the other missing burial workers. Also, their leader, Uncle Gen, was missing and something was wrong with Ming Zi.
On their own, each of these factors seemed unsuspicious. However, things undoubtedly felt wrong when they were connected together.
“Help him up.” Chu Yunshen saw everything that Ming Zi did. He put the handkerchief inside his pocket as he gestured for Xiaowu to support Ming Zi.
Ming Zi’s face was pressed against the damp dirty jail cell floor as he kept looking at the entrance. It seemed as though he would run out anytime.
No one dared to underestimate Ming Zi. Although Xiaowu had him under his control, Xiaowu didn’t dare to let go this time.
Even more shocking things proceeded to happen.
Everyone felt Ming Zi must be a heavy guy considering his size. Also, he put up quite a retaliation earlier. Cheng Xiaoxiao could see Xiaowu deliberately holding Ming Zi harder than usual.
To begin with, nothing that happened today was normal.
Cheng Xiaoxiao felt Ming Zi seemed light and airy as Xiaowu held him down. It seemed as though he was weightless.
Why was Ming Zi so odd?
Cheng Xiaoxiao recalled Xiaowu had to use a lot of strength to apprehend Ming Zi earlier. She almost thought Ming Zi was a demon incarnate.
After all, Xiaowu was unable to pin him down right away and he survived Chu Yunshen’s kick as though it were nothing.
A man like him would be as heavy as an iron bull!
Ming Zi was a big man. And then how did he end up so brawny and strong?
Cheng Xiaoxiao felt there was something wrong with Ming Zi.
