Lose My Heart to the Lovely Kitten Princess - Chapter 136
Chapter 136 Uncle Gen’s disappearance
Wang Er suddenly tilted his head back and laughed loudly. His husky voice reverberated throughout the jail cell and sounded strange and arrogant.
Xiaowu wanted to go forward and hit him, but Chu Yunshen pulled him back.
“We will come back tomorrow,” said Chu Yunshen before standing up to straighten his robes and leave.
“Master…”
Xiaowu told the guards to send Wang Er back to his jail cell and quickly chased behind Chu Yunshen.
“Master, why did you stop the interrogation?”
Chu Yunshen didn’t answer Xiaowu. Instead, he asked Xiaowu, “Where is Li Genfa?”
Oh no!
He forgot to tell Chu Yunshen about the matter.
After Xiaowu failed to find Uncle Gen at the unmarked burial gravesite, he headed to Uncle Gen’s home.
Sure enough, there was no one there.
Uncle Gen’s compound was completely empty. Xiaowu had gone to his place several times, but it was the first time that he ever entered Uncle Gen’s room.
Every single wall was plastered with yellow talismans. It sent a chill down Xiaowu’s back just looking at it.
Xiaowu didn’t find anything valuable in the room. Also, Uncle Gen’s clothing was in disarray and the place appeared to have gotten robbed.
However, Xiaowu knew this was just a facade. He noticed that the eight trigrams mirror on the door before was gone.
Why would a robber steal an old eight trigrams mirror?
It appeared Uncle Gen had the opportunity to come home after getting back from the unmarked burial gravesite.
Tingzhu and the others always kept a low profile about the operation, so Xiaowu had no idea how Uncle Gen came to know of their plans.
Also, how could Uncle Gen have the time to come back to the city before disappearing without a trace. After all, he had eyes all over the city.
Xiaowu thought about it in every direction but was unable to make any headway. He headed back to Prince Jing’s residence in a daze and forgot to report this to Chu Yunshen.
Xiaowu lowered his head and apologized for his mistake, “Master, I slipped up and let Li Genfa escape…”
“Go to the punishment… Never mind.”
Xiaowu looked at Chu Yunshen’s thin lips and knew he was going to punish him as usual, so he lamented in his heart as he lowered his head to accept his punishment.
However, Chu Yunshen glanced at his arm strangely before pondering briefly and suddenly changing his mind.
“Tomorrow, we will interrogate Li Erfa. “
The moment Chu Yunshen changed his mind, Xiaowu was beside himself in shock.
He snapped out of his daze when Chu Yunshen gave him new orders.
“Master, do you mean we shouldn’t interrogate Wang Er?”
Chu Yunshen said nothing and simply glanced at Xiaowu with his bright eyes.
Xiaowu caught on quickly this time. He simply lowered his head briefly in silence before suddenly exclaiming in shock.
After Xiaowu shouted, he recalled he was in Chu Yunshen’s presence, so he quickly closed his mouth.
By the time he raised his head, Chu Yunshen had already walked up to the corridor up ahead.
“Master, got it. Do you think Wang Er is too cautious, so we shouldn’t bother wasting our time interrogating him?”
He felt the same way.
Xiaowu had already considered this earlier.
Rather than waste time trying to get Wang Er to talk, it was smarter to interrogate someone else.
Li Erfa was a good option.
He had an explosive temper and was a candid man who did not always do the politically right things.
Xiaowu finally caught up with Chu Yunshen’s mind. He had to admit Chu Yunshen even walked faster than the average man.
“Let’s go back home.”
“Yes, Master.”
Since Chu Yunshen didn’t show any disdain, he must be spot on.
Xiaowu knew Chu Yunshen’s reaction well and happily went over to get the horse carriage.
The next day at the justice department jail.
Chu Yunshen sat in front of the old wooden table elegantly.
“Bring Wang Er and Li Erfa over.”
Wang Er and Li Erfa were quickly brought over by the guards to kneel in the same spot as they did yesterday.
Xiaowu cut to the chase and told them about this situation candidly, “We already know about you killing Qian Jin. You had better come clean about all the other people you have killed over the years.”
Wang Er remained nonchalant. Since Li Erfa was oblivious about what happened yesterday, he cursed for a long time the moment Xiaowu brought up Qian Jin.
“Are you done cussing already? If you are, then come clean about what you have done.” Xiaowu was already accustomed to Li Erfa’s cursing. He was able to block out the cursing and focus on what was important.
“Think carefully. We are talking about dozens of cold cases. Also, you don’t have much time to consider.”
“What? Is the justice department trying to force us to admit to the crimes? Is this how things work around here?” Wang Er raised his head and started to mock Chu Yunshen without looking at Xiaowu.
Wang Er’s disdain failed to agitate Chu Yunshen. Instead, Chu Yunshen glanced at Wang Er calmly before he said unhurriedly, “Do you think everything will go back to normal if you refuse to admit to your crimes?”
Wang Er thought there was nothing Chu Yunshen could do about him if he refused to say anything.
Chu Yunshen’s words reminded Xiaowu that Xiaowu knew their weakness.
“Do you think Uncle Gen will let you off?”
Xiaowu didn’t know where Uncle Gen was, but he could only use him for now. After all, these people were only afraid of Uncle Gen, even though he wasn’t sure why.
Xiaowu’s ploy worked. The moment he brought up Uncle Gen, Wang Er, and Li Erfa’s faces instantly changed.
Li Erfa contemplated before he said reluctantly, “I will tell you everything. I will tell you everything that you want to know.”
Xiaowu turned to see if Chu Yunshen had any orders for him, but he simply nodded gently.
The guard quickly brought pen and paper over while Li Erfa told Xiaowu everything.
In reality, Li Erfa’s version of the story was no different from what Xiaowu already knew. He simply filled in more detail.
“Do you mean Uncle Gen always knew that you killed Qian Jin and the others?”
Xiaowu recorded Li Erfa’s testament as he did his best to question him.
“Uh huh! Uncle Gen didn’t ask where Qian Jin had gone at all. He also didn’t tell us he wanted to hire new burial workers.”
Since Li Erfa genuinely wanted to save himself, he told Xiaowu everything in great detail.
“Qian Jin was from the same hometown as us, so we already knew each other. We came to work as burial workers together. Since Qian Jin was the smartest of the lot, he was also the one who came up with this idea of stealing behind Uncle Gen’s back to make a quick buck.”
“Did Uncle Gen know about this from this start?”
Chu Yunshen suddenly raised his head and looked at Wang Er with his bright imposing eyes to scrutinize every expression on Wang Er’s face.
“O-of course not!” Li Erfa was so startled by Chu Yunshen’s intimidating gaze that he stammered. He swallowed some saliva and did his utmost to avert his eyes.
“It was strange. Even though no one had uttered a word, Uncle Gen found out about it. He did not say anything about it and simply turned a blind eye to our actions, but…”
Wang Er watched as Li Erfa came clean about everything so easily. Something suddenly triggered him and he interrupted Li Erfa, “… But he wanted a cut.”
He could not stop himself from telling Xiaowu, “Uncle Gen kept asking for more money, so Li Erfa and Qian Jin started to be unhappy with Uncle Gen.”
Wang Er pointed at Li Erfa as he said, “Also, there were too many of us. Everyone had different opinions about it. Everyone felt they did more work than the others and all of us just wanted a bigger cut.”
The moment he talked about Qian Jin, he looked angry. “I didn’t expect Qian Jin to sell things behind our back!”
Xiaowu interrupted Wang Er, “Weren’t you already selling valuables you stole from the unmarked burial site?”
“Yes, we were! Since our cut kept shrinking, we had no choice!”
Xiaowu found Wang Er’s self-righteousness inexplicable. He shook his head as he continued taking his testament.
Chu Yunshen sat by the side quietly as he looked at Wang Er and Li Erfa with his beautiful eyes and observed them.
Wang Er seemed addicted to talking and refused to stop. “It’s no big deal if you want to sell more valuables, but Qian Jin scared us by pretending to be a ghost!’
Wang Er’s eyes lit up excitedly when he got to this as though he was enjoying it.
“He was very scared when he encountered us, so he tried to get away with it by pretending to be a ghost. Sadly, there was excellent moonlight that night, so we could see his shadow.”
Xiaowu had an inkling of what Wang Er was about to say.
“Hahaha! How could ghosts have shadows?” Wang Er shook Li Erfa by the shoulder as he spoke and gestured for Li Erfa to speak. His face was no longer normal. Instead, Wang Er appeared as though he was possessed by an evil spirit.
“I pretended not to know it was him. I decided to kill him altogether when he came near!”
Li Erfa felt as though he was experiencing it for the second time when he heard Wang Er. He hugged his head and wanted to hide somewhere.
Wang Er seemed displeased by how guilty Li Erfa felt. He pulled Li Erfa up and forced him to make eye contact.
“Weren’t you the one who gave him the last stab? Have you forgotten?”
Li Erfa was terrified of Wang Er and didn’t dare to move a muscle as he shook his head hard.
“Qian Jin lost so much blood. The ground was completely red.”
Wang Er sighed with satisfaction one final time leaving Xiaowu inhaling deeply from shock.
Wang Er was terrible. How could he tell Xiaowu about the way he murdered Qian Jin so happily?
Xiaowu placed the statement in front of Chu Yunshen as he attempted to make Wang Er snap out of his daze.
“Wang Er! What do you have to say about the deaths of the other burial workers?”
Wang Er was already crazy and refused to answer Xiaowu. Instead, Li Erfa scolded Xiaowu indignantly. He seemed to think Xiaowu was still his friend whom he could order around.
“Are you nuts? We already told you everything. What else do you want? What else can we say?”
Xiaowu parted his lips and wanted to retort, but he felt he was missing something, so he suppressed his words.
Chu Yunshen went through Xiaowu’s interrogation records briefly and noticed something amiss. He placed the statement back on the table and told Xiaowu coolly, “Stop the interrogation. It wasn’t them.”
What did Chu Yunshen mean?
Had they nothing to do with the people who went missing? Why didn’t Xiaowu know about this?
Was he really missing something? Xiaowu picked up the interrogation records and went through them.
After scrutinizing it carefully, he discovered something important. There was something about the time they started working as burial workers.
