Chapter 126 A little scared since it’s my first time
Wang Er was very curious about Xiaowu as well. Xiaowu was in a disguise and changed his gestures and voice to match his fake identity, but his airs made him seem out of place. He stood out like a sore thumb among these crude men.
“My mother complained about me idling at home and told me to find a job. A beggar living on the same alley as Uncle Gen told me about the opening.”
Xiaowu was very good at making up stories and didn’t skip a beat as he spoke.
Initially, he intended on posing as a family member of Uncle Gen’s missing employee. However, Uncle Gen ended up telling him to come to work before he even got to it. Also, it was an even faster way to learn the truth.
Xiaowu was relieved that he did not have that conversation with Uncle Gen. Otherwise, Wang Er, Li Erfa, and the others would have seen through his lies.
Xiaowu heaved a sigh of relief as he came up with a new story for his fake identity.
Wang Er did not get suspicious about what he said and nodded as he spoke.
“You must be talking about Zhao Da, the beggar with leprosy, right? He talks so much.”
He was in luck.
It seems he had finally gained some trust in the team and was now a step closer to finding the truth.
Xiaowu felt they were a little too mysterious to be burial workers. Also, there seemed to be more behind the reason these people disliked newcomers.
Xiaowu looked at the fog sweeping over the mountain and concealing everything from sight. He recalled the strange sound he heard earlier, so he acted scared and changed the subject to ghosts.
“Er, do you think there is something strange about the burial site?”
Wang Er looked at Xiaowu as he shrunk his neck and came closer to him. He walked away from Xiaowu in disdain.
“What are you doing? Stay away from me!”
“Er, it’s m-m-my first time burying dead people, so I am a little scared.”
Xiaowu stealthily looked at the others before he whispered to Wang Er, “Also, I think I heard some strange noise earlier.”
Xiaowu kept tugging Wang Er’s robes without letting go. Wang Er kept pulling his robes but was unable to wrest them free of Xiaowu, so he had no choice and had to angrily follow Xiaowu as he cursed.
Xiaowu did not get upset. Instead, he continued putting on an exaggerated expression and looked like a complete coward.
“Are you about done? How can a man like you be afraid of ghosts?”
Wang Er already had it with Xiaowu. Xiaowu was unable to shovel as he was holding onto Wang Er, so he used his free hand to stab his shovel into the ground altogether.
“The unmarked burial site is full of men. Since there is a lot of Yang energy around, ghosts won’t try to get us. Let go of me now!”
Xiaowu pretended to buy what Wang Er said and released his robes.
However, he spoke to Wang Er with certainty, “Er, I’m not joking. The burial site has a lot of ghosts…”
Just as Wang Er was about to scold Xiaowu, Li Erfa finally interrupted when he could no longer contain himself.
“What else did your mother say? Why don’t you tell us everything she said?”
Even though Li Erfa was mocking Xiaowu, Xiaowu acted like a fool who didn’t know better.
Not only was he not angry with Li Erfa’s mockery, but he also said with a serious look on his face, “My mother said loads. She even said I will be a great success in the future and even…”
The moment Li Erfa heard what Xiaowu said, he burst out laughing so hard that he could not keep his back straight and nearly hit Xiaowu with a shovel.
“Hahaha! You are hilarious! What’s your name?”
Xiaowu acted as though Li Erfa was praising him from the bottom of his heart. He narrowed his eyes as he grinned at Li Erfa to reveal his pearly whites.
“My name is Xiaowu. It means general. My mother says I look like a big general, so she named me that.”
“A general? Hahaha! Some kind of general!”
Li Erfa was incapable of suppressing his laughter and ended up dropping his shovel somewhere.
He squatted onto the ground and kept laughing nonstop while he walked past Xiaowu to pull Wang Er’s pant leg.
“Did you hear that, Wang Er? This guy is hilarious!”
Wang Er dodged Li Erfa angrily. He seemed annoyed and found Li Erfa irritating.
Xiaowu caught on right away, but Li Erfa was clueless.
He noticed Wang Er had moved away from him, so he walked over to Wang Er and elbowed his arm.
Wang Er was unable to dodge Li Erfa this time, so he finally shoved Li Erfa aside.
Since he did not hold back, and Li Erfa was caught by surprise and occupied with laughing, Li Erfa staggered before falling squarely on his butt.
Li Erfa stopped laughing this time as he sat in a daze on the ground.
Wang Er didn’t think Li Erfa would fall, so he looked slightly awkward.
He wanted to reach his hand out to help Li Erfa. Xiaowu watched as Wang Er moved his hands slightly from this side of his body before pulling back again.
Xiaowu pretended to be startled and ingratiatingly helped Li Erfa up as he helped to clean the dirt on Li Erfa’s robes worriedly.
“Are you okay? Did you get hurt?”
Li Erfa looked at how unmoved Wang Er was before he looked at Xiaowu as he pretended to help him. In reality, Xiaowu was stoking a fire.
He pushed aside Xiaowu’s hand and pointed at Wang Er as he scolded, “Wang Er, what the hell? Why did you push me?”
Xiaowu watched as Li Erfa almost prodded Wang Er with his finger altogether and said nervously, “Erfa, it was all my fault. Don’t blame Er for it.”
“This is none of your business! Stay out of it!”
Xiaowu’s words undoubtedly fanned the flames for Li Erfa. He stopped pointing at Wang Er and pushed Wang Er.
“Are you a wuss or something? Are you going to tell me what the hell you were trying to pull?”
The other burial workers heard the commotion the moment Li Erfa fell. They stopped their work and secretly turned to look at them.
Wang Er was unable to stay calm, so his face turned livid when Li Erfa shoved him. He gritted his teeth as he roared deeply, “Li Erfa, are you crazy? How dare you make trouble on the unmarked burial gravesite?”
“Stop staying this shit! Are you trying to pull the same stunt you pulled on Qian Jin…”
“Shut up!”
The moment Li Erfa brought up Qian Jin, Wang Er went crazy and his murky eyes became bloodshot as he glared at Li Erfa. He seemed like he was about to kill Li Erfa if he continued talking.
Xiaowu was wondering why Li Erfa didn’t finish his sentence when a man dressed in a dirty grey outfit suddenly pulled Li Erfa aside.
The man had a very tanned face and his eyes looked swollen like he had just woken up. Xiaowu later learned he was Ming Zi.
Ming Zi whispered into Li Erfa’s ear. Despite Xiaowu’s powerful internal energy, all he could make out were the words “Uncle Gen” and “punishment”.
Perhaps he was trying to talk Li Erfa out of fighting? Or Uncle Gen might punish them if he found out?
Xiaowu was unable to know for sure, but Li Erfa went back to work after Ming Zi spoke to him.
Was that it?
Xiaowu didn’t know whether to cry or to laugh. Initially, Wang Er and Li Erfa’s seemed like they would break into a fight. However, it fizzled into nothing in the end.
These veteran burial workers must have a lot of secrets.
Everyone resumed working quietly. From above air, all of them resembled puppets as they mechanically worked without saying a word.
The wind swept over the high ground and sounded like there was something howling up there.
“Are you done with your work? If you are done, then leave!”
After Li Erfa was done scattering the last of the medicinal powder, he patted his hands clean and ordered Xiaowu and the other workers.
Why would they want the workers to go back first? Why were they staying here?
Xiaowu smiled innocently at Li Erfa. “Aren’t you coming with us?”
“Stop talking! Just go and stop asking.”
“Okay…” Xiaowu saw how angry Li Erfa was and realized it was not the right time to act stupid.
The veteran burial workers looked at the newcomers as they left. Other than Xiaowu, no one dared to make a peep.
Li Erfa and the others were tall and came in a large number, so it was a bad idea to argue with them.
Since Xiaowu couldn’t stay any longer, he slowly packed his things while he thought about what to do next.
“What on earth is wrong with you? Hurry up!”
Li Erfa kicked Xiaowu for being a slowpoke.
Initially, he thought Xiaowu was bound to stumble, but he unexpectedly remained squatting firmly on the ground.
Li Erfa couldn’t believe Xiaowu was still standing, so he kicked Xiaowu again. However, Xiaowu stood up unexpectedly.
Li Erfa kicked too hard, so he lost balance and fell. Fortunately, Xiaowu gave him a hand, so he didn’t fall.
Li Erfa felt even more annoyed by Xiaowu.
No one noticed this little incident as the newcomers quickly left the unmarked burial grave.
Xiaowu saw Wang Er anxiously digging the freshly dug mounds.
What were they trying to do? Were they digging for bodies?
Xiaowu wanted to look, but Li Erfa quickly noticed Xiaowu looking at Wang Er.
Li Erfa used his body to block Xiaowu from seeing what Wang Er was doing and shouted angrily, “Wang Er, are you in a hurry to bloody go somewhere?”
“Li Erfa, you had better watch your tongue!”
Wang Er caught on that someone else was still here, so he put down the shovel as he cursed Li Erfa.
Xiaowu realized it was impossible for him to stay as Li Erfa and Wang Er pushed him out of the unmarked burial gravesite.
However, Xiaowu did not leave right away.
Xiaowu hid nearby and waited for Wang Er and the rest to come out. It was hard to find a spot to hide since there was no shrubbery or trees around, so Xiaowu had the fog to thank.
Xiaowu finally heard the sound of Li Erfa cursing angrily from the unmarked burial grave sometime later.
Before long, footsteps could be heard coming towards Xiaowu. Wang Er’s voice was the most distinct since it was so hoarse that it sounded like sandpaper.
“We did well today, so we can get more money.”
“What difference does it make? Uncle Gen still gets the biggest cut! Life is so easy for him,” said Li Erfa nasally.
“Stop talking! You know that Uncle Gen doesn’t like it when we talk too much.”
