Chapter 119 Lingering under the moonlight
Chu Yunshen would have doubts if Wan Xia told Chu Yunshen directly.
If Wan Xia told Chu Yunshen she knew the cat, Chu Yunshen would learn that she snuck out to play.
Wan Xia was so thoughtful!
Also, Chu Yunshen always looked antisocial. How could Wan Xia possibly fall for him?
In any case, Chu Yunshen always ignored women who admired him, so there was no need for her to get worried.
After Cheng Xiaoxiao thought things through, her mood suddenly lifted.
Wan Xia noticed how much warmer the cat was to her and smiled when Cheng Xiaoxiao wasn’t looking.
The sky gradually turned dark, the room had gone completely quiet and not a sound could be heard.
Xiao Yue had gone off to skive somewhere. She certainly led an easier life than her mistress.
Although Cheng Xiaoxiao didn’t like to be served by maids, she could not stand how lazy Xiao Yue was.
Wan Xia had a good temper and didn’t blame Xiao Yue. Instead, she left Xiao Yue to do as she pleased.
She took Cheng Xiaoxiao to try on the new garments she had made.
The white cat’s fur looked even softer and shinier dressed in the red jacket under the soft glow of the candlelight.
Cheng Xiaoxiao even gave off a soft glow as she moved.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was thoroughly impressed by Wan Xia’s skills. She stood in front of the mirror and couldn’t stop looking at her new outfit.
She had such skillful hands!
Cheng Xiaoxiao adored Wan Xia’s kindness and felt warmed by her gesture.
She kept looking left and right inside the mirror and even spun around.
Wan Xia couldn’t help laughing when she saw how cute the cat was.
Cheng Xiaoxiao loved seeing Wan Xia laughing, so she deliberately spun a few more times to make her laugh. Wan Xia smiled from ear to ear with her dimples showing.
Her laughter sounded like a gurgling brook and Cheng Xiaoxiao felt delighted by her joy.
The cat and the woman played all night and their laughter could be heard throughout the compound filling the empty space in the darkness.
Time always flew by with Cheng Xiaoxiao around.
Even though it was late, laughter could still be faintly heard from Wan Xia’s quarters.
“Master, shall I tell them you’re here?”
Xiaowu and Chu Yunshen stood at Wan Xia’s door and could hear the laughter coming from inside.
They had been standing for half an hour, Chu Yunshen said nothing and didn’t enter the room.
It was getting late and it was getting cold, so Xiaowu reminded Chu Yunshen as he kept looking somewhere.
“It’s fine.”
Chu Yunshen veered his listless eyes before he reached his hand out and wiped the dew from his robes.
Xiaowu couldn’t help yawning before he followed behind Chu Yunshen when he turned to leave.
“Master, are you here to see Miss Wan Xia? Why won’t you let me tell her?”
Xiaowu sounded a little muffled from his grogginess, but Chu Yunshen heard him loud and clear.
Chu Yunshen was simply unable to sleep.
After all, he had not slept by himself for a long time, so the bed suddenly felt a little big and empty.
Moreover, he had to come over to check on them every now and then.
However, no one could be sure what he was here to see.
The next day, Cheng Xiaoxiao slept in and woke up to find Wan Xia already changed her garments.
She yawned lazily and lay on her back on her little bed with no image to speak of.
Wan Xia had specially made her a bed.
It was covered with a warm wool blanket and the bed felt particularly soft.
The moment Cheng Xiaoxiao lay on it, she couldn’t help sleeping till the cows came home.
“Are you awake?”
Wan Xia heard a faint sound coming from the lion cat and knew she was awake, so she got Xiao Yue to fetch fish soup from the kitchen.
“The fish soup is ready. I have kept it warm in the kitchen so that you can eat it the moment you wake up.”
Wan Xia’s soft gentle voice promptly made Cheng Xiaoxiao feel better from her injuries.
Wan Xia was genuinely kind to her.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was so touched that she couldn’t stop thinking about it for a long time.
“Is Miss Wan Xia around?”
Xiaowu’s voice came from the door.
Why was he here so early in the morning?
Was he here to take her away?
Chu Yunshen had agreed to let her stay for a few days. Had he gone back on his word?
Cheng Xiaoxiao was instantly anxious and gestured that she didn’t want to go back.
Wan Xia looked at her comfortingly and gestured for her to calm down while she acknowledged Xiaowu before she opened the door for him.
“You’re too kind. His Highness sent me to give you some silk and a bowl of milk paste for the cat.”
Xiaowu tactfully turned down her offer for him to take a seat. Instead, he put down the things and glanced around the room discreetly.
He saw Cheng Xiaoxiao lying leisurely on the bed looking at him sideways and veered his eyes before he bade farewell to Wan Xia and went back to Chu Yunshen.
Cheng Xiaoxiao caught him secretly heaving a sigh of relief.
Humph.
Was she a man-eating monster?
Why did Xiaowu take off when she saw her?
“Have you sent the stuff?”
Chu Yunshen had gotten a feather from somewhere and was teasing the baby bird in the cage when Xiaowu came back to report.
Since Xiaowu had gotten regular shocks of late, he was already numb and reported nonchalantly.
“Master, I have already sent the things.”
“Tomorrow, send some jewelry over.”
The baby bird jumped around but was incapable of snatching the feather from Chu Yunshen and ended up chirping angrily.
Chu Yunshen felt it wasn’t satisfying enough to play with the baby bird this way, so he to the bird out of the cage and placed it on his large palm.
“Again?”
Xiaowu was stunned by Chu Yunshen’s sudden interest in Wan Xia.
Chu Yunshen said nothing and merely raised his brow.
Xiaowu did not dare to make any comments.
Xiaowu was instantly scared and quietly left.
“Are you bored too?”
“Chirp chirp.”
The baby bird tilted its head sideways as it observed Chu Yunshen with its large eyes before it jumped off Chu Yunshen’s hand and hid into some corner.
Chu Yunshen felt as though he was asking for it as he threw the feather on the table.
He looked at the images of the lion cat on the table and felt a headache coming on.
The moment Chu Yunshen heard the sound of a bell chiming, he thought the mischievous lion cat had come back and he suddenly turned in his chair.
The baby bird opened its eyes wide as it looked at him innocently.
“It was you.”
Chu Yunshen returned to his position when he realized it was the baby bird.
He placed the baby bird back in the cage so as not to be disturbed before he continued reading the books on the table half-heartedly.
After flipping a few pages, he realized it was the book Xiaowu have given him previously, ‘How To Make Your Cat Like You’.
He put the book down frustratedly before he placed a piece of paper on the table and prepared ink to paint.
In a few strokes, a lifelike lion cat appeared on the paper seeming as though it was stretching in his direction.
……
Chu Yunshen put the brush down and headed out of the study and went for a walk in the garden.
He walked all the way to Wan Xia’s compound.
Wan Xia’s quarters were very far from the garden, so he must have walked through the entire place.
How did he end up here?
He turned up here last night and came again today.
He wondered how the lion cat was doing.
Wan Xia was a thoughtful person and sincere about the cat, so she ought to be having a hell of a time there.
Chu Yunshen thought about the cat making faces at him and his lips automatically curved upwards.
Just as he was about to enter Wan Xia’s quarters, he recalled the dreams he had been having.
It felt as though he hadn’t dreamt as much in the past two days.
Was this really working?
Chu Yunshen contemplated non-stop as he stood outside the compound for half an hour before he finally went back to his bedroom.
Xiaowu accompanied Chu Yunshen on his walk to Wan Xia’s quarters again.
“Master, you like Miss Wan Xia as well and want to make her now concubine, right?”
Xiaowu observed Chu Yunshen’s expressionless face cautiously before he finally blurted his suspicions.
“You don’t have to go through the trouble of coming here. If you like Miss Wan Xia, you can summon her to your room every day.”
Xiaowu was racking his brains trying to help Chu Yunshen.
After all, it was the first time his master paid any attention to a woman, so he had to do his utmost to help!
“20 pedals from the punishment officer.”
Chu Yunshen spoke sternly before he turned to return to his room on his own leaving Xiaowu trembling in the wind.
On the second day, Xiaowu sent Wan Xia jewelry.
On the third day, he sent cosmetics.
On the fourth day, he was tasked to send the finest pearls.
On the fifth day, it was…
On the sixth…
Each time, he was told to send either a bowl of milk paste or fish soup along with the gifts.
In reality, Wan Xia prepared this for Cheng Xiaoxiao every day. Since Cheng Xiaoxiao was a competitive eater, she did not refuse the food and wiped everything out.
Chu Yunshen would play with the baby bird and proceed to go for his long walk to Wan Xia’s quarters every day.
Xiaowu got smarter and stop talking too much when he came over with Chu Yunshen in the middle of the night.
Cheng Xiaoxiao was delighted to stay with Wan Xia. She only had two problems on her mind.
For some reason, a lot of people kept coming to visit Wan Xia, so Cheng Xiaoxiao almost felt giddy from the intense fragrance she had to suffer.
Wan Xia remained good-natured and smiled as she offered them a seat.
She would quietly listen to their ridicule before sending them on their way courteously.
Cheng Xiaoxiao could remember some random woman coming in and calling Wan Xia her little sister repeatedly with condescension.
Hmm… What did she say to Wan Xia?
Cheng Xiaoxiao did her best to recall what she said.
“Little Sister Wan Xia, His Highness keeps sending you gifts of late.”
A woman with bright red nail varnish sat at Wan Xia’s table acting as though she was the lady of the house.
“Now that things are looking up for you and His Highness favors you only, he has forgotten about the rest of us. He didn’t even give us a single chance…” She glared at Wan Xia resentfully as though she wanted to eat Wan Xia alive.
“Miss Qingqing, you are overthinking it. His Highness only gave me some reward for taking care of his lion cat.”
Wan Xia seemed like an innocent little lamb while those women looked absolutely predatory.
Qingqing even harassed her by saying, “I’m glad you know you are just a slave taking care of a cat.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao almost when insane with fury!
She was the one who was a slave! Her whole family was slaves!
How could she say such things to Wan Xia?
What did Wan Xia say in the end? She simply said Qingqing was right!
Right her arse!
Cheng Xiaoxiao certainly didn’t think Wan Xia was her slave and felt heartbroken for her.
After sending away yet another group of pretentious women, people finally stopped coming over.
