Lose My Heart to the Lovely Kitten Princess - Chapter 101
Chapter 101 A gorgeous female ghost
Chu Hongyi behaved rather imposingly as he kept a straight face while he nodded to the servants with his child-like face.
The moment the servants were gone, he reverted to his usual hilarious self. “Xiaoxiao, did I look serious? Do I resemble Brother Yunshen?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao almost laughed out loud. Since Chu Hongyi couldn’t even stay serious for three seconds, he was not even 10% as imposing as Chu Yunshen.
The more they walked, the more deserted the place seemed.
In the end, they halted in front of some old and lifeless rooms where no one else could be found.
In the distance, the faint sound of a crying woman could be heard as the cold wind gusted. Chu Hongyi had goosebumps when he got there.
“Where the hell are we?” Chu Hongyi furtively went close to Cheng Xiaoxiao’s ear and begged, “Xiaoxiao, let’s go. This place is so creepy and there is no sunshine at all. It’s so scary…”
Since Cheng Xiaoxiao could see yellow light radiating from the jade pendant, she didn’t want to leave.
She gestured for Chu Hongyi to put her down, but for the first time, he refused to do as she said.
“Xiaoxiao, don’t go. I’m worried you might be scared, so let me carry you in, okay?”
Cheng Xiaoxiao could hear that Chu Hongyi’s voice was trembling. At the thought that he had offered to catch ghosts with her, she went softhearted and agreed to do as he said.
She clearly didn’t want to stop here and patted Chu Hongyi’s chest and gestured for him to go on.
Chu Hongyi swallowed his saliva. “Xiaoxiao, we really have to stop. If we go on, we will end up going inside.”
That went without saying! She wanted to go in.
The closer they got to the house, the more Cheng Xiaoxiao could sense the spirit energy in the jade pendant reacting, so she insisted and kept bugging Chu Hongyi to go in.
Chu Hongyi couldn’t convince Cheng Xiaoxiao out of it, so he suppressed his panic and trembled as he opened the door before him.
“AHHH!!! don’t come over!!!” screamed Chu Hongyi the moment he opened the door that was covered with dust.
He held Cheng Xiaoxiao so tightly that he almost strangled her to death.
Cheng Xiaoxiao struggled to wrest herself from Chu Hongyi’s hands before she finally jumped onto the ground.
After Chu Hongyi opened his eyes tentatively, he discovered this was just an ordinary room that was covered with dust and cobwebs due to disuse.
“Sigh! There’s nothing here.” Chu Hongyi looked around the place quizzically. “There’s nothing here. Let’s go, Xiaoxiao!”
Nothing?
As if!
“Hear my order, jade pendant, and open my eyes!”
Cheng Xiaoxiao saw a female ghost with her tongue so long that it dragged onto the ground. She felt disgusted when the female ghost was almost about to put her face right against Chu Hongyi’s.
She hurriedly walked Chu Hongyi away from the spirit and pretended she couldn’t see the horrifying ghost as she gestured to Chu Hongyi, “Wait here. Don’t say a word no matter what you see in a minute. If you get scared, you can go out and wait for me.”
“I will wait for you here. I promise I won’t make a sound,” said Chu Hongyi hurriedly.
“Okay. If you get scared just close your eyes and chant the Diamond Sutra or something. Any Buddhist scripture will do,” said Cheng Xiaoxiao before she wiped her words from the table. The ghost had floated over and craned her head to look but Cheng Xiaoxiao didn’t want her to see them.
Chu Hongyi obediently squatted down and started to close his eyes and chant the Diamond Sutra.
Now for the ghost!
Cheng Xiaoxiao walked up to the center of the hall unhurriedly and waved to the puzzled female ghost.
Cheng Xiaoxiao watched as the female ghost hovered close to Chu Hongyi but was incapable of getting any closer before she waved for her to come over.
“Come over! He can’t see you.”
“Why can you see me if he can’t?” The female ghost flew to Cheng Xiaoxiao in the blink of an eye. Even though her tongue was very long, she was able to speak normally.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at her mouth and felt like digressing to ask why she didn’t have problems talking.
Cheng Xiaoxiao decided to politely ask the ghost about her tongue so that it wouldn’t keep distracting Cheng Xiaoxiao.
She pointed at the female ghost’s tongue discreetly. “Can you hide this?”
“Of course.” She swiftly took on a completely different appearance.
The female ghost was dressed in a fine bright green silk robe with clouds embroidered in silver at the cuff of her sleeves. She wore a white floor-length skirt with gold embroidered green gauze draped over her shoulders.
She had absolutely stunning features.
“You’re gorgeous!” Cheng Xiaoxiao stared intently and couldn’t help exclaiming in surprise when she saw the ghost’s transformation.
The female ghost’s red lips curved upwards slightly as she blocked her face shyly with her sleeve. “Thanks. I haven’t heard anyone say that in ages.”
“Are you an imperial consort or something since you are so pretty?” It suddenly dawned on Cheng Xiaoxiao who she was. However, Cheng Xiaoxiao felt she was missing something here.
“I’m imperial consort Mei, a favorite of the previous emperor.” The ghost looked into the distance with her mesmerizing eyes as though she was looking at another world.
“The previous emperor? Doesn’t that sort of make you the mother of the current emperor, Chu Hongzhen? Doesn’t that sort of make you Chu Hongyi’s grandmother?” Cheng Xiaoxiao finally realized something was amiss. “If you were the previous emperor’s favorite consort, why are you living here? Why did you die so horribly?”
Imperial consort Mei avoided answering Cheng Xiaoxiao. Instead, she took interest in Chu Hongyi. “Is Zhen’er the emperor now? Is that boy his son?”
Something must have happened to her, but it was clear that imperial consort Mei didn’t want to talk about it. Cheng Xiaoxiao pursed her lips and replied, “If the Zhen’er you are talking about is Chu Hongzhen, then he has become the emperor. You’re right. That’s his 14th son over there. He adores him a lot.”
“He certainly resembles Zhen’er, but his personality is completely different.” Imperial consort Mei looked at Chu Hongyi and frowned slightly in displeasure. However, there was still a smile on her face.
Cheng Xiaoxiao watched as a motherly smile appeared on her gorgeous face in an untimely fashion and found it odd.
She interrupted her, “Aren’t you curious why I can see you?”
“Anything is possible, so there is nothing to feel curious about.” Imperial consort Mei stopped scrutinizing Chu Hongyi and Chu Hongyi finally felt the restlessness lifting from him.
“I have even become a ghost and remained in this palace for years. What’s so strange about a talking cat?” Imperial consort Mei turned to face Cheng Xiaoxiao with her back and didn’t want to say more.
She made so much sense that Cheng Xiaoxiao was incapable of retorting her.
Sure enough, good-looking people tended to be more persuasive.
Despite Cheng Xiaoxiao’s awkwardness, she continued chatting with her, “What if I told you I could help fulfill your wishes so that you can reincarnate?”
“….” Imperial consort Mei’s back trembled slightly, but she didn’t turn around.
“Don’t you want to reincarnate?” Cheng Xiaoxiao kept going at it. Cheng Xiaoxiao looked hard at imperial consort Mei and kept her eye on the slightest reaction she might have.
A sense of sadness seemed to radiate from imperial consort Mei from behind. She spoke dryly in an unconvincing tone, “I have no unfinished business.”
She was such a liar.
Although she was pretty, Cheng Xiaoxiao couldn’t let her keep lying to herself.
Also, how could Cheng Xiaoxiao absorb her spirit energy if she continued being so resistant?
The moment Cheng Xiaoxiao thought about the spirit energy, she was filled with motivation.
For the sake of taking human form and eating fine food, she had to do it!
Cheng Xiaoxiao was determined to persuade the disinterested imperial consort Mei to change her mind.
Cheng Xiaoxiao looked at her mysteriously before she said, “You might not have a lot of grievances, but if you didn’t have any wishes, you wouldn’t have stayed in the earthly realm for so long. Only ghosts with unfinished business will stay that long, so you are lying.”
Regardless of how Cheng Xiaoxiao exposed imperial consort Mei, she refused to utter a word.
Cheng Xiaoxiao became even more determined. “Don’t worry about how hard it is to fulfill your wish or whether I am lying to you. Since you haven’t left the palace in a long time, you probably don’t know about the situation outside. I am very famous outside the palace. Almost all the ghosts in the capital have heard about me, Granny Cat Demon.”
Cheng Xiaoxiao felt a little guilty about bragging about her fame, so she stuck her tongue out when imperial consort Mei wasn’t looking.
Even after Cheng Xiaoxiao convinced imperial consort Mei repeatedly until her tongue was sore, imperial consort Mei stood with her back facing her and seemed unmoved.
……
Cheng Xiaoxiao started to worry. Imperial consort Mei must be the most powerful ghost in the palace. Otherwise, the jade pendant wouldn’t have led her here first.
She must have been sent as a test for Cheng Xiaoxiao and was simply too hard to convince!
If Cheng Xiaoxiao couldn’t get her to change her mind, Cheng Xiaoxiao ought to leave.
In any case, there were ghosts aplenty in the palace, so it was no big deal to try somewhere else.
Even though the other ghosts wouldn’t be as powerful as her, Cheng Xiaoxiao wouldn’t have to keep wasting her time here.
There was always a way out. It wasn’t Cheng Xiaoxiao’s style to stubbornly cling to imperial consort Mei.
Just as Cheng Xiaoxiao was struggling in her heart about giving up, imperial consort Mei finally spoke, “Are you really able to grant any wish?”
“Of course!” Cheng Xiaoxiao was worried that she would chicken out, so she hurriedly promised her.
Perhaps imperial consort Mei was startled by Cheng Xiaoxiao’s reaction, so she went stunned for a moment before she started telling her story.
“My father used to be General Huguo…”
“Were you daughter of a general?” Cheng Xiaoxiao was so astonished that she almost shouted out loud.
Imperial consort Mei looked delicate and gorgeous. How could she be a general’s daughter?
Imperial consort Mei seemed displeased when Cheng Xiaoxiao interrupted her. Her beautiful eyes glanced at Cheng Xiaoxiao angrily, but Cheng Xiaoxiao felt that she was just pouting adorably and was dying to give imperial consort Mei everything she wanted.
“Go on. Go on…” Cheng Xiaoxiao shrank her head back uneasily and gestured for imperial consort Mei to continue.
“My father was General Huguo, but my mother died when I was a kid owing to her weak constitution. Since my father was out defending the borders all the time, there was no one around to discipline me, so I ended up becoming more uninhibited than girls from other official families.”
A huge scroll painting seemed to open before Cheng Xiaoxiao with imperial consort Mei depicted inside acting spoiled without the slightest misery she had now.
“I offended a lot of other ladies of the court due to my candid personality when His Majesty summoned me to join the harem. Fortunately, His Majesty doted me a lot and I loved him too…”
Imperial consort Mei seemed engrossed thinking about her past. As she thought about the love of her life, a gentle glow radiated from her face.
“Since His Majesty loved me, I made a lot of enemies in the harem. I thought he truly loved me, so even though life was tough, I didn’t mind. The day that my father came home after the war was over, was the beginning of my nightmare…”
