I Can't Escape The Baby's Father After Returning Novel - Chapter 78
Chapter 78: Whose Fault?
After returning home from the hospital, Melanda looked fine.
But Mike knew that wasn’t the case. During the day, she pretended to be fine, but at night, she cried silently.
She still couldn’t accept Mandy’s death.
Mike couldn’t always be with her either. He still had to work. He texted her whenever he was free, but her replies weren’t as interesting as before. They were always just a few simple words.
Everyone agreed not to tell her about Mandy’s funeral and not to let her go because they were worried that her body wouldn’t be able to take it. She didn’t ask.
Melanda’s mother was with her at all times. She saw her daughter always sitting there alone in a daze. Sometimes, she would cry when she heard something or saw something.
Everyone was worried. This was not good for her body or the child in her stomach.
Actually, Melanda wanted to be happy, but she couldn’t.
Except for the six years she left, Mandy had almost always been in her life. She spent more time with Mandy than with her mother, let alone Mike.
Mandy knew everything about her.
She still remembered that when she first moved to this community, she didn’t have a single friend. Mandy was the first to greet her and was willing to be friends with her. The two of them had been inseparable since then.
At school, if anyone bullied her, Mandy would stand up for her. If there were any secrets, she would share them with them. All her girlish worries were shared with Mandy.
They agreed to go to the same university together, get married together, get pregnant and have children together.
And all of this had been blissful reality a few days ago.
But now, everything was gone. It had disappeared like a dream.
She really couldn’t accept it or face it.
Seeing that she was unhappy, Millie obediently stopped sticking to her and teasing her.
After work, Mike saw Melanda sitting at the table crying silently. He walked over, hugged her from behind, and kissed her cheek.
“Baby, what are you doing?”
Melanda shook her head and said nothing.
Mike turned her body around and squatted in front of her. “Baby, look at me.” Melanda raised her face and her eyes were filled with tears.
“You can’t go on like this. Remember what the doctor said? Being unhappy is not good for you or the child.”
“I know, but…”
“Let’s go. I’ll take you somewhere.” Mike seemed to have made up his mind. He pulled Melanda and left.
“Mom, we’re going out for a while. We’ll be back soon,” he said to Melanda’s mother before leaving.
“Okay, take care of her.”
“I will. ”
Soon, they were there.
They arrived at the cemetery.
Before she reached Mandy’s tombstone, Melanda had already broken down. Tears kept pouring out. She couldn’t see the way clearly anymore, and she was relying on Mike to pull her fonvard.
This place seemed to have an innate gloomy atmosphere that made people break down. The rows of tombstones, the austere environment, and even the occasional flower were blinding. The birds among the trees chirped, as if to remind people that it was alive and they weren’t.
In front of her, Mike stopped and placed the flowers he had bought on the way in front of the tombstone.
Melanda saw Mandy’s photo on the tombstone. Mandy smiled so happily. Melanda couldn’t hold on anymore. Her legs went limp and she sat down.
She reached out and tried to touch Mandy’s face, but she couldn’t. Why? Why were they meeting here?
“Why? What did we do wrong?” Melanda cried.
Mike’s voice was choked too. “If anything, I’m the one to blame. I’m the one who met the wrong person. Mandy isn’t to blame, and you aren’t to blame.”
Melanda didn’t want him to blame himself. “No, it’s not your fault. She betrayed you!”
“I just don’t understand why we have to pay such a high price when we clearly didn’t do anything wrong?”
“Why did Mandy and Dave lose their lives when they were so in love?”
Mike hugged her. “But, honey, there’s no point in thinking about this. Those things are in the past. No matter who was right and who was wrong, it’s in the past. Besides, it’s sometimes difficult to tell right from wrong.”
“All we can do is let go of the past and move on. Remember what Mandy told you? Don’t be sad over her. Live your life happily.”
“In a sense, life would have been very hard for Mandy without Dave.. They’re together in heaven now, aren’t they?”
