Chapter 68: Dave’s Arrest
Mike shook Melanda’s hand and said, “They’re going to arrest him tomorrow morning.”
Melanda finally snapped back to reality. “Could there be a mistake? What about Mandy?”
“They looked at the surveillance carefully. The possibility of a mistake isn’t high. But I also think this is very fishy, so the best way is to let the police figure it out. It’ll be good for Mandy too.”
Melanda nodded. “You’re right.”
They both fell silent. This development had taken everyone by surprise.
Melanda looked at Mike. “Honey, I have something else to tell you.” Although she didn’t think it was the right time, Jeffrey was still waiting for news.
Mike nodded for her to continue.
“Jeffrey just called and said he wants me at the scene the day after tomorrow. There’s a key detail that needs to be confirmed.”
Mike frowned when he heard that. “Don’t go at this time. I’ll send Leo over.”
Melanda said, “He said only I can confirm this. After all, I’m in charge. He said it would only take an hour.” Melanda raised a finger and waved it in front of Mike. “Besides, I’ve never been to the scene of this project. It’s indeed a little unreasonable to refuse.”
Mike looked at the woman he cherished. He knew her too well and understood that for a designer, the happiness of seeing a blueprint turn into a real building was priceless.
“Okay, I’ll send you there.”
“It would be great if you could,” Melanda said happily.
Mike looked at Melanda’s happy expression and tapped her forehead with his finger. “You’re like a child.”
The next morning, after sending Millie onto the school bus, Mike and Melanda drove to Mandy’s house. Mandy’s family was having breakfast and were surprised to see Mike and Melanda. “Have you guys had breakfast? Let’s have breakfast together,” Mandy’s mother called out.
“No need, Auntie. We’ve eaten. A cup of coffee will be fine,” Mike said.
Mandy quickly said, “Warm milk for Melanda.”
Melanda glanced at Mike, who didn’t seem to notice anything amiss, fortunately. This news shouldn’t be said on this occasion.
Not long after they sat down, the doorbell rang. Melanda glanced at Mike and immediately became nervous. Mike tightened his grip on her hand.
Mandy’s father went to open the door and the police walked in.
“Which one of you is Mr. Dave? We’re summoning you under writ of law. Please come to the police station to cooperate with our investigation.”
Mike and Melanda kept staring at Dave. Dave started to look panicked when he saw the police walk in. After hearing what the police said, his face suddenly turned pale and he sat helplessly in his seat.
Mandy was stunned. She looked at Dave and then at the cops. “He—what did he do? What happened?”
The cop said, “We suspect he had something to do with the photo op at the bar. We won’t know the details until after the investigation.”
Mandy’s mother murmured, “How did this happen? My God.”
Melanda stood up and walked over to hug Mandy. Mandy’s body kept trembling.
The police took Dave away. Mike said to Mandy, “Let’s go over and hear what Dave says.” Mandy nodded. Melanda pulled Mandy and followed Mike. They got into Mike’s car. Mike drove behind the police car.
When they arrived at the police station, the inspector came over and led them to a room. This room had a large glass window, but they could clearly see Dave in the interrogation room.
The police officer asked, “Did you take that photo? What’s your relationship with Selina? How did you two meet? Why did you take that photo?”
Dave sat there, crestfallen, and said nothing.
The policeman said, “You’d better tell me everything you know. That way, you can answer to your fiancée.”
At the mention of Mandy’s name, Dave looked up in the direction of the glass. It was as if he knew Mandy and the others were here.
Tears welled up in Mandy’s eyes.
“I want to see my lawyer. I won’t say anything until my lawyer comes,” Dave said..
