Mike’s work lasted until night. After dinner, he called. “Baby, I don’t know when I’ll be done here. Go to sleep first. You don’t have to wait for me. I’ll find you tomorrow morning.”

Melanda felt dejected

She pulled herself together and said, “Okay, remember to have dinner. Drive carefully when you come back.”

“Okay, I know. Remember to close the window before you sleep. The weather forecast says it’ll rain at night.”

“I know. I love you.”

“I love you too, baby. Kiss my little princess for me. Is she asleep?”

“Yes. I read her a storybook and she fell asleep.”

“Goodnight, baby.”

Mike hung up after saying that. It seemed like he was really busy. There were too many things that had happened recently.

If not for the fact that her body was still recovering, she would be working overtime now too, right? She missed the office and her colleagues a little.

Melanda felt a little bored without Mike by her side, so she went to bed early.

In the night, a loud thunderclap woke her from her sleep. It was going to rain outside. Melanda glanced out the window. There was no moonlight because it was going to rain. It was dark outside, and she remembered those eyes from that night again. Even though Mike said she thought someone was there because she was being paranoid, she knew she saw the figure clearly.

She started to be afraid again, so she closed her eyes and stopped thinking. But the more she wanted to sleep, the more she couldn’t sleep.

As she tossed and turned in bed, she seemed to hear footsteps outside.

She held her breath and pricked up her ears.

The footsteps sounded again!

This time, she was sure that she hadn’t heard wrongly!

Melanda picked up her phone and dialed 911. She was prepared to call the police anytime.

Then she picked up the wolfproof baton and started to walk out. She came to the corridor. It was dark outside, and only the small night lamp by the wall under her feet was lit.

There was no one.

She continued to walk forward, and then she realized that the door to Millie’s room was open!

Her daughter! Melanda tensed up.

She raised her wolfproof stick and said loudly,

“I saw you! I’ve already called the police! They’re already on their way! If you didn’t hurt my daughter, leave immediately. There’s still time!”

“Melanda, it’s me, Mike. Honey, don’t be afraid. It’s me. Put down what you’re holding.”

Mike walked out and held out his hand.

“Oh God, why is it you? You scared me, Mike. You scared me. I thought someone was harming our daughter. ”

Melanda let out a long sigh of relief, but Mike could hear that her voice was still trembling.

Mike walked forward and grabbed Melanda to hug her tightly.

“I’m sorry, baby. I wanted to see Millie first, then go back to our room. I didn’t expect to scare you. Why aren’t you asleep?”

“I was awakened by the thunder. Then, I heard a voice over here. I thought it was the stalker. By the way, why are you here?”

“After work, I still felt a little worried, so I came to take a look. Let’s go back to our room.” Mike hugged Melanda and together, they headed for their room.

“Mike, how did you get in? I remember I locked the door and all the windows.”

“Baby, you forgot the kitchen window.” Mike tapped Melanda’s forehead. “You can’t be so careless next time. I’ll worry.”

“Oh God, I missed the kitchen window,” Melanda said belatedly. “This is too dangerous. I’ll have to check it again.”

“It’s okay, baby.” Mike hugged Melanda and sat on the bed. He helped Melanda lie down.

“Now that I’m back, you can sleep in peace.” He watched Melanda lie down and couldn’t help but kiss her cheek.

“Mike, it’s good to have you. I can only sleep soundly with you around. When you’re not around, I always have nightmares and wake up.”

Melanda said while hugging Mike’s arm. She pulled Mike, and Mike took off his coat. Then he laid down beside Melanda and hugged her with his arm. He watched as she fell asleep in peace.

Actually, Mike was the person who was more reluctant to leave.

When he left at noon, Millie was crying hard. His mind was filled with the scene of Millie crying all day. He wished he was with them all the time. So when the work was over, even though he was afraid of waking Melanda, he came over. He was afraid Melanda would have nightmares again. He could only be relieved if he stayed with her himself..
