Chapter 41: Melanda In A Coma For A Week
The doctor came quickly and gave Millie a full body checkup. Millie was recovering well, but the tubes on her body couldn’t be removed yet.
Everyone was very happy to hear that Millie had woken up and came to see her. Aunt Annie’s eyes were filled with tears. The moment the girl saw her grandmother, she hurriedly said, “Granny, have you seen my mother? I want my mother.”
Aunt Annie took Millie’s hand and said, “Baby, Mom’s sleeping in the other room. When you’re better and they take off the tubes on your body, we’ll go see her, okay?”
Everyone felt extremely heavy-hearted when they heard Millie’s voice.
The past 24 hours had been unbearable for everyone present, especially Mike. He had been in Millie’s ward, but his heart had been with Melanda. The gut-wrenching despair hit him hard. The person he had always loved and cared for was in danger of leaving forever after he had just experienced the blissfulness of spending time together. How could anyone face this?
He didn’t dare to think about it, nor did he dare to look at his lover, who was lying in a hospital bed and fighting for her life. For the first time, he felt so weak and cowardly.
Millie fell asleep again soon after. She was still very weak. Mike took her hand and sat on the bed. Suddenly Millie cried, “Daddy, Mommy cried. She cried in my dream. She was sad. Daddy, go see her,” she said while crying.
“I will, baby. I’ll go see Mom. Go to sleep. I’ll go see Mom when you fall asleep.” Mike touched her wet cheek, wiped her tears, and kissed her hand. She slowly fell asleep again.
Mike’s heart pounded. He had never been so nervous before. He dragged his feet to the intensive care unit and walked closer to the glass window. He leaned against the wall beside the glass and took a deep breath, then slowly opened his eyes.
With just one look, Mike broke down.
Melanda lay inside while wrapped in bandages from head to toe. Her face was the only visible part, and she had serious bruises and cuts everywhere. Mike clenched his fists. She looked so fragile.
Why had Melanda suffered all of this? She was as innocent and kind as an angel. How could anyone bear to hurt her? Whoever he was, Mike swore he would pay. He grabbed the door handle, wiped his tears, and opened the door.
He was going to tell her that he would always be there, and that he would not leave. He wanted to transfer his courage and strength to her. He was going to face this difficulty with her and let her return to him. He could not live without her, and their daughter could not live without her.
“Baby, please wake up. I want to hear you laugh and see your beautiful smile.” Just as he said that, Mike couldn’t help but cry.
“Please come back to me, baby. I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you that night. I’m sorry you suffered because of me. I’m so happy to know that Millie is my child.’
“Our daughter will be fine, baby. She’s recovering well now. Fortunately, my blood is compatible with hers. We saved her, and she’s been looking for you. So, honey, please wake up and come back to us. We need you. I need you. I don’t know how I’ll live without you. I can’t lose you again.’
There was no response. The only sound in the empty ICU was Mike’s sobs and the beep of the nursing machine.
Mike had never felt so desperate. He didn’t know how long he had been in the ward until a nurse came in to perform a routine checkup for Melanda. She looked at Mike and smiled to comfort him.
Before leaving, Mike kissed Melanda’s forehead and said,
“Baby, I’m going to see our daughter. If you want to know what surprise I’ve prepared for you, you’d better wake up soon. I love you, Melanda.”.
