I Can't Escape The Baby's Father After Returning Novel - Chapter 40

Mike covered his face with his hand and cried silently.

He was relieved that his daughter was saved. But Melanda, the love of his life, might not come back.

Mike slammed his head against the wall and cursed himself.

“I’m so stupid! I’m such a fool!” When she heard Mike say this, Mike’s mother cried and hugged her son.

“Mike, you have to be strong. Millie needs you more than ever now. Melanda will wake up. She will! She’s a mother. She’ll wake up for Millie and you! She’s so strong. She’ll get through this safely! Mike, Melanda needs you.”

Mike thought to himself over and over again, “Baby, please wake up! Baby, if you can hear me, please come back to me. I can’t live without you. I can’t raise Millie alone. We need you, my love.” In his daze, Mike felt someone touch his cheek gently. He looked up, but there was no one there! He cried harder.

Everyone went outside Millie’s ward. Only one person could enter the ward each time. Aunt Annie decided to go home and get some clothes and necessities for Melanda and Millie. Dave volunteered to accompany Aunt Annie back. Mike should have been the first to go see Millie, but he was too emotional and decided not to go in for the time being. Mandy was the first to go in, followed by Mike’s father and mother.

Seeing everyone cry out, Mike suddenly felt afraid and didn’t dare to go in.

Mike’s mother said, “Go, son. Go see your daughter. She needs you.”

Mike walked into the ward and saw a small person covered in bandages and several tubes. Tears welled up in his eyes again. How painful must this have been?! Millie had to bear all this at a young age. He clenched his fists so tightly that the veins on his hands popped.

How could he not recognize his own child? How could he not know of her existence? Mike was filled with regret.

“Darling, I’m Daddy. I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you immediately. I was wrong. Wake up quickly. I swear I’ll never leave you again. I’ll be by your side forever, okay? Wake up, my baby! Please!” Mike said hoarsely.

At that moment, Mandy knocked on the door and peeked out. “Mike, the police are here.”

Mike nodded and turned back to kiss Millie’s forehead. “Baby, Daddy needs to leave for a while. I’ll be right back.”

“Mr. Mike, I’m very sorry about what happened. Our colleagues were behind them when the accident happened, but it was still too late to stop it.”

“We checked the car carefully. My instincts were right. The car was tampered with and the brakes were broken, so Miss Melanda couldn’t control the speed.” When he heard this, Mike cursed and punched the wall behind him. Mike’s mother walked over and stopped him.

“We’re checking all the surveillance around the school and questioning the witnesses. We’ll do our best to catch this bastard. I hope they recover soon,” he added. “I’ll stay in touch with you. If there’s any progress, I’ll tell you.”

“Who is so evil? He actually attacked an unarmed woman and child. He’s too evil,” Mike’s father said angrily after sending the police away.

“Son, let’s go to the ICU to see Melanda,” Mike’s mother said.

“No, Mom. I can’t face her now. I’ll go crazy if I see her. Please give me a little more time. I’ll go accompany Millie first. If Melanda wakes up, please tell me immediately.” Mike felt as if all his strength had been sucked out. He felt sad and weak.

Mike returned to Millie’s ward and leaned against the bed weakly. He looked at the small person lying on the bed. Everything had been so wonderful two days ago. He and Melanda had finally understood each other’s feelings. He had planned to propose to Melanda. Why had things become like this? After Millie woke up, was he supposed to tell her that her mother was lying in a hospital bed with her life on the line? What if she cried and wanted her mother?

As he was thinking, Mike suddenly heard a small voice.

“Daddy!”

Mike looked up in surprise. It was Millie. Millie was awake.

“Baby, Daddy’s here. Daddy’s here,” Mike murmured. Millie looked so weak and pitiful. “Where’s Mom, Dad? Where’s Mom?” Millie asked weakly while looking around.

Mike’s heart skipped a beat. He touched Millie’s head and said,

“Mom is sleeping in the other room, baby. Mom is severely injured, and she needs to sleep a little longer. When you’re better, let’s go see Mom together, okay?”

Mike kissed Millie. “Baby, Daddy has to call the doctor and tell them you’re awake. Let them give you a checkup, okay?” Millie nodded obediently..
