Chapter 39: Millie Is Out of Danger, and Melanda Is Still In A coma
Mike lay on the blood transfusion bed with hollow eyes. His heart ached, and tears kept flowing. Millie was actually his daughter, but he had never recognized her. Damn it. When had he slept with Melanda? Why did he have no memory of all that had happened? So the “jerk” he had been thinking about was himself? How laughable. He thought of Melanda’s obsession with “Millie’s father” and thought of the “I’m sorry” she had told him before the car accident. All the mysteries were solved. So that was it! So that was it! He felt that he was really the biggest fool in the world! Millie looked so similar to him, but he didn’t suspect anything!
Millie was going to be six years old, which meant that this was the reason Melanda disappeared six years ago. When he thought of the pain he had caused Melanda, Mike’s heart ached. Why didn’t she tell him? He would have married her immediately because this was what he had been looking forward to. Mike deeply regretted his cowardice six years ago. He should have confessed it bravely. Not only had he missed out on six years with Melanda, but he had also missed Millie’s birth, as well as Millie’s every year of growth as a child. Thinking of how much Millie yearned for her father’s company, he felt his heart ache!
The more Mike thought about it, the more his heart ached. He only hoped that God would give him another chance to make it up to her. He swore to protect Melanda and watch Millie grow up. “God, please protect my love and my daughter. I beg you to let them wake up safely!” Mike, who was in the hospital bed, cried as he thought.
The nurse came over and told Mike that the blood draw was complete and she had drawn two bags of blood. Mike didn’t care. If necessary, she could take all his blood. He wanted to bear the pain and burden for them.
The nurse instructed Mike to lie in bed for a while before coming down slowly. A few minutes later, Mike returned to the outside of the ICU. Everyone was still waiting there.
Mandy helped Mike sit down and then sat beside him.
“Remember the graduation party six years ago?” Mike nodded and waited for her to continue.
“Remember when you were drunk and fought with a friend of yours because you found out he and your girlfriend, Jenny, had sex?” Mike nodded again and listened intently.
“Well, Melanda and I helped you in your room and even changed your clothes. She cleaned your wounds and bruises. I asked her to watch you because there were guests downstairs. I had to clean up the mess we caused,” she continues.
“She told me that shortly after I left, you grabbed her and started to kiss her. Because she loved you for so long, she didn’t stop you. She thought you had finally noticed her. She was happy,” she said while crying.
“But after you guys had sex, you said, ‘Get out, Jenny, we’re done.’ You thought she was Jenny, and then she broke down. Do you know how many times I saw my best friend cry for you, Mike?” she asked fiercely.
“Every time you had a new girlfriend, she would lock herself in her room and cry. It broke her heart to see you showing off your girlfriend at school. This was why when she found out she was pregnant, she started to be afraid that you wouldn’t believe her and that you wouldn’t accept the child, so she ran away. Although of this was very difficult for her, she still did it,” Mandy said as she cried.
“She left because she wanted you to live the life you wanted. She didn’t want to disturb your life because of the child. She has always loved you, even until now. She had no other man but you.” Mike was already covered in tears.
He thought to himself, “My poor Melanda, my sweet girl. God, what have I done? Please, give me another chance. I need them. I would rather die than lose them.”
The door to the operating room opened and the doctor came out.
“I have good news, but I also have bad news. The good news is that the child is out of danger. We took out all the broken glass from her body and stopped the bleeding. She is about to be moved to the ward,” the doctor said with a smile. Mike and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Thank you, God!
“The other good news is that we already operated on Melanda and stopped the bleeding in her brain. We took the broken glass from her face and body and fixed her fractured ribs and legs. The bad news is” —he paused and looked at everyone apologetically.
“Melanda fell into a coma after the surgery. The next 24 hours are very critical. She might wake up at any time, or she might not. The brain is a very complicated organ in our bodies. We can’t accurately predict the time she will wake up.” Hearing this, Mike couldn’t help but slide to the ground.
“But don’t worry, we’ll do our best to help her. Later, we’ll send her to the intensive care unit. Now, you can go see your daughter. One person at a time. She’ll be placed in room 304. I’m sorry, but we hope everything goes smoothly. We hope a miracle will happen and Melanda will wake up as soon as possible. You can go see Millie now.” With that, the doctor walked back to the operating room..
