Chapter 35: The Mysterious Threatening Call 2
Twenty minutes later, Mike’s car stopped outside the coffee shop, followed by Dave’s. When she saw them quickly enter the coffee shop, Melanda felt a sense of security she had never felt before. Mandy rushed into Dave’s arms, but Melanda was frozen. With Millie in her arms, she stayed in place and didn’t move. Mike walked over quickly and squatted in front of the mother and daughter. When Millie saw Mike, she burst into tears. “Daddy, Daddy, I’m so afraid.”
Mike took Millie and hugged her tightly as he stroked her back. “It’s okay, baby. It’s okay. Dad’s here, and so is the police. They’ll protect us.”
At this moment, Melanda’s nose tingled and her eyes welled up with tears. She suppressed her tears.
Just as Mike finished speaking, the police officer walked in. “Excuse me, who is Mr. Mike?” Upon hearing this, Mike hurried over.
“Hello, sir, I’m Mike. This is my girlfriend, Melanda. She received a threatening phone call.”
Mandy quickly asked the policeman to sit down beside her.
Melanda took out her phone, calmed herself, and started to explain the situation to the police. “I got a call from an anonymous number this afternoon. I couldn’t recognize the voice, because the person used a voice-changing device. The person said he was coming for me. We thought someone was pulling a prank, or called the wrong number, because they didn’t mention my name, but someone sent me this picture just now.”
“Do you know anyone who might have a grudge against you? A potential admirer you might have refused?” the cop asked. Mike had been holding Melanda’s hand and watching Melanda silently as he listened to the cop.
“No, I just got back from Manhattan. I can’t think of anyone who wants to hurt me.” Melanda shook her head. She looked at the cop and then at Mike.
“Baby, is it possible that it’s Jeffrey? Could he be trying to get back at us?” Mike asked.
It was possible, but would Jeffrey be so stupid? After all, Mike hadn’t reported him. As long as he didn’t do anything else out of line, Mike and Melanda wouldn’t do anything, but if he dared to threaten Melanda, he would only shoot himself in the foot.
“I don’t know, baby. I don’t think he’ll be stupid enough to do that. It’s someone else, someone who wants me to leave.” Melanda’s face was filled with suspicion and worry.
“We’ll search the area and see if there’s anyone suspicious. During this time, I suggest that Miss Melanda not travel around alone. We’ll track the number the stalker used and let you know immediately if anything turns up, but if this guy is smart enough, he would have used an anti-tracking device, so we might not be able to track him so quickly,” the cop said solemnly. Melanda nodded. With that, the cop went out to search.
“We have to get out of here as soon as possible, baby. Aunt Annie is waiting for us with my mom and dad. We’ll talk about it when we get back, okay?” Melanda nodded. Mike hugged Millie and stood up. Although Millie didn’t know what was going on, she saw the adults’ serious expressions and knew something was wrong, so she stayed quiet.
Mandy and Dave were in one car, while Melanda, Mike, and Millie were in another. Mike had been looking in the rearview mirror to see if anyone was following us. I was also looking in the rearview mirror to see if any cars were following us.
Mike gripped the steering wheel tightly until his knuckles were white. His jaw was clenched, and his lips were pursed. Melanda squeezed his arm and smiled at him. He smiled too, but his eyes were still filled with worry and fear. Mike pulled Melanda’s hand to his lips and kissed it. Then he squeezed her hand and gripped it tightly while their fingers interlocked.
They got home quickly, then Mandy and Dave arrived. Everyone was waiting in the living room.
As soon as Melanda entered, her mother rushed over and hugged her. “Baby, are you okay? Is Millie okay?”
Seeing how afraid her mother was, Melanda quickly said, “Mom, I’m fine. We’ve already called the police. The police will handle it, so don’t worry too much. Besides, there’s Mike.”
“Baby, sit down and talk. I’ll get you guys some water,” Mike said while hugging Millie from behind.
Mike’s mother took Millie and asked anxiously, “Is there any news from the police? Who exactly is threatening poor Melanda?”
“There’s no news yet, Auntie. The police said they would track that number. When we came, they were still searching the areas near the coffee shop to see if there was anyone suspicious,” Melanda replied..
