“Let me get you some medicine first.” As soon as Li Zi entered the house, she hurriedly kicked off her shoes and rushed to the television cabinet to take out the medicine box that was always kept there.
Shen Nian’s looked tenderly at Shen Yin’s wrist. He gently blew on the swollen area as he took the medicine from Li Zi.
“It must hurt a lot.” Shen Nian guiltily applied the medicine for her. His tone was so gloomy, she could almost see his woebegone face. “How did that bastard bully you? Tell me, and I’ll avenge you.”
“Be good. I’m really fine.” Seeing him like that, Shen Yin quickly recounted what had happened after leaving the airport.
The two of them were furious when they heard it. Shen Nian even wanted to rush over and beat the man up.
“He’s too much! He’s completely out of control!” Li Zi sat beside Shen Yin and angrily spoke up for her friend. “Don’t worry, if this Lian fellow dares to offend me in the future, I’ll definitely make him suffer!”
“Mom, when I’m older, I’ll definitely avenge you!” Shen Nian pursed his little lips and raised his small face as he made Shen Nian a firm promise. Already, one could see how handsome he would be in the future.
“I’m thankful for both of you.” Shen Yin was touched from the bottom of her heart. She had already lost her faith in others. She was even subconsciously skeptical of the various emotions that existed between people.
But these two had flung their hearts open and embraced her without reserve. They were good to her and they used their boundless love to soothe the hurts of her past.
She was content to have met two people in this life, who treated her with such sincerity.
“What! You’re not allowed to do such dangerous things alone again, let alone leave Nian Nian alone in such a crowded place. Fortunately, Nian Nian is smart and knew how to contact me. Have you thought about how serious the consequences would have been otherwise?” Li Zi nagged at Shen Yin, every word filled with heartfelt concern for her friend.
Shen Yin listened patiently, waiting for her to release her pent-up anger before she put an ingratiating arm around her shoulders. “All right, Prosecutor Li, stop scolding me. I’m starving. Get us something to eat.”
“You!” Li Zi pushed her away helplessly and took the food she had prepared from the fridge.
The sound of pots and pans banging and running water emerged from the kitchen. Shen Yin leaned back against the sofa and closed her eyes peacefully. With her dear son in her arms, she felt more at ease than ever.
No matter how glorious it was to wander abroad, it was still not home. She would always feel lonely and lost.
Now that she was home and listening to the sounds of a busy kitchen, and smelling the aroma of familiar food, she knew that no matter how tired she was, she still felt safe and it was worth it.
Shen Nian leaned against her quietly. Even though he was also very tired, he waited until Shen Yin was fast asleep before he got up and went to the room Li Zi had set aside for them to get a blanket to cover her.
Li Zi bustled about for a long time. When she came out, she saw Shen Nian gently keeping watch over Shen Yin, who was sleeping soundly. His small hand was still holding Shen Yin’s hand tightly.
Li Zi’s heart melted. She even began to envy Shen Yin for having such a cute and sensible son.
“Nian Nian,” she called out affectionately as she crouched down, her eyes crinkling with laughter. “Hurry up and wake your mother up for dinner!”
“Okay, Auntie Li Zi.” Shen Nian gently nudged the sleeping Shen Yin and quietly waited for her to open her eyes and wake up.
Shen Nian poured two cups of warm water and handed them to Li Zi and Shen Yin. He was as considerate as a young gentleman. “Have a glass of water before dinner. It’s good for your health.”
After dinner, Shen Yin listlessly returned to her room to sleep.
She slept long and hard, recovering from the many days of exhaustion.
When Shen Yin woke up, she saw Nian Nian sitting by the bed with a cup of freshly warmed milk in his hand.
“Mom, get up. Don’t you have to work today?” Shen Yin wanted to stay in bed, but he pulled her up and forced the milk into her hand. He turned and went to the bathroom to squeeze the toothpaste out for her and prepare the cosmetics she would need.
By the time Shen Yin had slowly drunk the milk and gotten out of bed, she could wash up and apply her makeup straight away.
