Chapter 2: Data Vision

White Stone Apothecary was a common, little known shop in the town of Leopold. The items in the store were very common too.
Other than the “Fish Booster”, normal painkillers and hemostatic agents were considered good items in the store. The other medicines were not worth mentioning at all.
Ring, ring…
The bell hanging on the door rang and the youth behind the counter put down his account book and looked up. He was about 18 years old and he looked kind of shy. “Good morning, Mr. Alvin,” the boy said.
Although he was much older than Alvin, Sanji insisted on addressing him formally as he believed that it was the necessary respect he needed to show towards his employer.
“Good morning, Sanji. How is Aunt Mary’s leg?” A boy in hunting attire and leather boots entered the store.
“She’s much better. She should be able to walk tomorrow. Mom always wanted to thank you in person for getting the bone-healing herbs for her!” the shy boy said with gratitude. His eyes were so innocent that he looked more like a child than Alvin.
“Hahaha, it’s no big deal. Just ask Aunt Mary to make me one of her famous Leopold seafood meals,” Alvin said jokingly. Aunt Mary’s family was his neighbor, and she had helped Grandpa Leo and him often.
“Grandpa Leo… Erm, it’s good to see that you are doing fine!”
Before Alvin arrived, Sanji was thinking about how to comfort him. When the old shop owner, Grandpa Leo, passed away, Alvin disappeared for the entire day and did not look okay.
Sanji was very glad that Alvin was back to his old self again.
“By the way, Mr. Alvin, do you want to check the accounts for this week? There is nothing much really, just that the Fish Booster’s stocks are running low.”
As a crew member of the shop, Sanji was very capable. He had arranged the accounts neatly and clearly. He had been helping Alvin run the store ever since Grandpa Leo was bedridden a year ago, so Alvin did not have to worry about trivial problems at all.
“Alright, Sanji. Got that. I’ll resupply the Fish Booster soon. Look after the store for me,” Alvin said, then he left the White Stone Apothecary.
As a matter of fact, Alvin was considering passing the entire apothecary to Sanji and making him the new owner. He had new plans for himself, and there was no way he was going to stay in Leopold and waste the rest of his life.
The store was started by Grandpa Leo, and it was all thanks to it that they could live through the most difficult time of their lives. Thus, Alvin was very fond of the store and could not trust strangers to handle it.
Sanji seemed like a promising choice. Alvin had decided to slowly teach Sanji about medicine soon so that he could run the store himself.
Sanji looked at the sword, bow, and leather bag that Alvin was carrying on his back. He mused to himself, “Is he going into the mountains again? I feel like Mr. Alvin is slightly different today.”
Not far away from Leopold’s gate was an endless green sea that had a primitive breath of nature, apart from a long main road leading to places afar.
Limited by productivity, the development of the wild was uncommon in this era. Other than the human settlements, the rest was a large area of undeveloped wilderness.
Compared with the development of mountains and forests, humans were more willing to explore the sea. Before long, people had realized that the maritime trade and treasures far away were far more profitable compared to land reclamation and cultivation. Therefore, with both his future and present self coexisting in one body, Alvin was attracted to the world that was in the middle of a great revolution.
Alvin did not have time to appreciate the look of nature. He entered the jungle from a trail created by the hunters.
What was strange was that the boy was running along the usual familiar path, but he would glance at the bottom left corner of his vision from time to time even if nothing was there. He did not even bother to look at the useful herbs along the sides of the road.
Alvin slowed down after he saw a patch of gray rocks on the ground. He ran into the bushes nearby after making sure he was not followed.
The excitement from last night had finally subsided a little.
It was not that his mind was bugged by the existence of the new consciousness. Ever since he recovered from the nightmare last night, Alvin noticed a fuzzy illusory icon creeping up in the bottom left corner of his vision.
As time passed, the icon became clearer. Then a notification sound rang up and the illusory icon was completed. It was a logo that Alvin had been familiar with in his previous life.
“This… Isn’t this my newest sports wristband?”
Thump, thump.
His heart started to beat very fast.
“This looks very familiar! Could it be…”
Alvin was thrilled. He mentally clicked on the logo and suddenly, his vision changed.
“Time: 6:30 AM
“Temperature: 21°C
“Wind speed: 10km/h
“Humidity: 52%
“Walking speed: 0”
…
Rows of green data messages were constantly scrolling in Alvin’s vision like a waterfall. The boy’s eyes widened and his mouth kept twitching.
“That’s right! It’s my sports wristband that claims to have the most comprehensive functions! Other than being able to project the data on my retina, it’s displaying the same data as shown on the wristband screen.
‘What the hell! A sports wristband?!
“Are you kidding me? I’m in an alternate world and I have this sports wristband with me? What for? To live a healthy lifestyle?!”
Alvin still had a glimpse of hope and started experimenting with it. After a while, he looked both sad and happy.
What he was certain about was that this weird thing that had transmigrated together with his mind was indeed his sports wristband. It did not have any super powerful functions such as superintelligence, automated projection, artificial intelligence, or the ability to transmigrate between worlds.
However, it had undergone some changes due to him traveling to the current era.
First, it did not have a physical appearance. The program had bound itself with his mind and he could use all of its functions with his thoughts alone.
It shared the same senses with himself and it could accurately quantify various parameters within his perception range. For example, he could only roughly judge the wind speed, but the wristband was able to accurately measure it up to 0.1 m/s. He could estimate a tree’s height to be around ten meters, but the wristband would accurately measure it as 10.13 m and so on.
It could make microscopic identifications such as zoom in or out, and observe the microscopic world. It could also recognize shapes and identify unique sound patterns, such as finding a unique four-leaf clover at a glance from thousands of clovers. It could also remember a unique sound and identify it again in the midst of other noises.
Lastly, the core function was its ability to monitor his physical body. However, since the world and his body had changed, this function required a series of dynamic tests and data on other humans to display results. Thus, this section was still empty.
Alvin was not sure if there were any other functions for the wristband, as the control was manual and it did not have any artificial intelligence in it. Therefore, he had to figure it out slowly in the future.
He hid the digitized information and sighed. Although it was nothing compared to the other powerful skills that could help him rule the world, it had been gifted to him for free and he gladly accepted it.
Alvin composed himself and started his life with what he named “The Weakest Goldfinger in History: Data Vision” or “Golden Nails” for short.
