Chapter 11: Lord Naberry

Alvin wasted no time and moved into the city.
If the pirates started raiding the city from the inside, the damage would be unthinkable even if there were city guards. Alvin could not tolerate that.
“Ah!!!”
“Spare me!”
“Run!”
The fierce-looking pirates were slaughtered by Alvin’s sword like lambs.
Other than their leader Billy, the normal pirates couldn’t compete with Alvin at all.
Fortunately, the pirates had used most of their ammo during the attack just now, and they did not have time to reload during combat. That was the same for Black Bear Billy.
Even though he had tried to reach out for his gun, it was just a bluff to scare Alvin. Alvin confirmed that after he had disarmed Billy.
As long as he was not targeted by all the firearms at the same time, Alvin could easily kill the enemies alone with his perfect body stats.
During the sword fight in the harbor just now, Alvin clearly understood how powerful he was now. Any group of fewer than three pirates would be slaughtered by him easily.
As time passed, more pirates fell to Alvin’s blade. He even managed to save the city guards who were in trouble when he walked past them.
Alvin would come to the rescue wherever he heard shouting and screaming.
Finally, after Alvin had killed the pirates that were raiding a jewelry store, a series of gunshots were heard.
Boom!
Boom!
The city’s backup forces had arrived.
“Not too late.”
In this situation, the pirate captain would soon order his men to retreat as long as he was still sane.
Alvin looked at the time. He had prevented the pirates from annihilating the city guards even though they had the upper hand after destroying the city wall. He had stalled them for a long time.
Although the pirate attack had been launched quite a while back, only 20 minutes had passed since they had entered the city. It was amazing how the backup forces had arrived so fast with fully equipped weapons, given the current standard of armed forces at this time period.
Weep—
Soon, whistles were heard from outside the city. All the pirates started to retreat after hearing them.
Alvin did not chase after the pirates. He went back to his apothecary and Sanji’s home and was relieved to find that the pirates had not invaded these places. He went back home after everything had been settled.
Alvin had a quick wash-up after he reached home. But before long, a visitor had arrived.
Graham knocked on the door furiously. Seeing that Alvin was home, Graham looked very happy and tried to drag him out of the house.
“Alvin! Come with me! Lord Naberry wants to see you. It’s something good! Come!”
“Lord Naberry?” Alvin had no choice but to follow Graham.
Alvin knew who Lord Naberry was. He was a commander in the city guards and a sword expert in Leopold. Alvin did not understand why he was wanted during this busy period when the raid had just ended.
Graham told Alvin what happened to him after they had separated.
He was indeed more cunning than a fox. Seeing that the pirates had already invaded the city, he did not fight the pirates head-on. Instead, he ran to pick up the reinforcements with the excuse of telling them the current situation.
As an unenlisted hunter scout, no one could blame his actions, although it did not sound heroic.
No wonder Alvin had not seen him while hunting down the pirates. Graham did not dare to return to the battlefield without backup forces.
After the pirates had retreated and everything else was settled.
The commander of the city guards, Lord Naberry, heard reports from the first line of defenders on the city wall and knew that Alvin had dominated the battlefield with just a bow. He was hoping to meet this marksman in person.
After all, he had made great achievements in defending against the pirate invasion, and it was reasonable for the commander to show his appreciation.
Soon, Alvin met Lord Naberry in a small guard post set up near the fallen wall.
The lord was not wearing his uniform—he only had a fine longsword on his waist. He was more like a proud noble than a commander.
The lord invited Alvin to take a seat on the sofa after simple greetings. He looked at Alvin. Although Alvin was wearing a hunter suit, he was handsome and neat and had good posture. His hands were calloused as he had been practicing with a sword for many years.
The lord asked keenly, “Noble?”
Alvin smiled but did not answer the question.
Seeing that Alvin was not wearing anything related to his house sigil, Naberry nodded and believed that he knew what had happened. He did not ask further, but he became very friendly.
Alvin did not know that this lord had already labeled him with a few tags after that brief conversation.
Fallen noble. Inherited house values. Experienced. Ambitious. Lack of opportunity.
Just like his old self.
It was pretty common, especially after the new commercial nobles had gained their footing. More traditional nobles had gone bankrupt and were forced to leave their homes. Other than the titles they once had, all they had left was the noble upbringing in them. Alvin was thought to be one of them.
Even if he could hide his identity, he was exuding the qualities characteristic of a noble.
For hundreds of years, the nobles of the Tulip Alliance, including the royal family, had a history of intermarriage between kingdoms. Thus, many of the upper-class nobles held titles that were recognized by multiple kingdoms at the same time.
There were hardly any barriers between the nobles of the different kingdoms. As long as one could still maintain the decency of a nobleman, one could quickly integrate into the local community.
For a young man like Alvin, who could not maintain even the basic decency of a noble, it spoke volumes of him when he stepped up for the city in a time of crisis.
Thus, Naberry did not look down on Alvin. Instead, he believed him to be talented indeed.
One of them was a well-informed traditional noble that was willing to teach the younger generation; the other had insight and vision way ahead of their time and wanted to know more about the upper echelons of the kingdom. Surprisingly, they found that they had a lot in common and had a good time talking.
“My Lord…” Nabuli’s adjutant suddenly walked in. He looked at Alvin and then whispered in the lord’s ear.
The battle was over and the clearing of the field was done.
The collection of the pirates’ bodies was done, but the exact loss of lives and valuables could only be tabulated the next day.
When they were confirming the bodies, they had found the sailing master of the Blood Anchor, Black Bear Billy!
That was a man whose name was all over the navy’s bounty lists. The lord was sure that there was probably no one in the entire city guards besides himself who could match Billy.
Also, the lord was informed that the captain of the Blood Anchor never the boat during the battle. Black Bear Billy was the leader of the attack and was the main culprit.
The pirates had attacked the city, but their leader had been killed. This disastrous pirate invasion had turned out to be a blessing in disguise after all.
For the first time in front of Alvin, Lord Naberry adjusted his posture, and the casual attitude he had earlier disappeared.
Alvin had not fought in the shadows with Black Bear Billy, the fight was seen by the first wave of city guards.
It was not hard to guess who had killed Billy. From the fatal blow Billy had received on the neck, he could tell that this killer had way better sword techniques than Billy.
It was shocking indeed!
That was not all.
The adjutant also reported that based on the wounds and arrows appearing on these dead bodies, this boy had killed almost one-third of the pirates alone. That was close to half of what the city guards had done.
The lord no longer dares to look at this handsome and polite young man as a normal person. The words that he had prepared to recruit him under his command wouldn’t be appropriate now.
The lord tried to say something, but he was at a loss for words. He looked at Alvin as though he was some kind of monster and said, “You are a skilled swordsman! Hope we can have a match someday.”
Alvin replied with a smile, “Of course, my Lord!”
