Dungeon Hunter - Chapter 203
Chapter 203: Chapter 64. The Royal Observatory of Greenwich (2)
No one had noticed the man. Not a single person in the room!
Lieutenant General Carls felt a chill run down his spine.
The general was a top-notched awakened hero. Although he was based in the United Kingdom, he was well-known all over the world as one of the strongest awakened heroes. The general could defeat most high monsters, and he was able to sense the presence of one of the highest monsters, if it appeared.
Carls was surprised at the fact that this man appeared without getting caught. The appearance of the man felt like a bad omen.
The members of the White Lion unit quickly surrounded the man. They activated their skills and were about to kill the man. When the fifty White Lion unit members and Carls teamed up, they could kill one of the highest monsters. The general was confident that they could even take down a demon, if they were alone. Carls thought that the man, whoever he was, could not escape this room intact.
“Please remember. If you attack, you die.”
The man smiled. His smile was so cold but held tremendous confidence. It seemed that the man could not care less about the soldiers.
No one had ever scoffed at the White Lion unit. It had not been long since the unit was founded, but Lieutenant General Carls had taken much time and effort into selecting and training the unit members. The members had gone through perhaps the toughest training in the world, and more than a hundred died or were hurt during the trainings.
The general could proudly say that the White Lion unit was the most powerful unit of awakened heroes on Earth.
“Am I scared?” Carls thought.
Had it been some other occasions, the general would have chopped off the man’s head right away. After all, Carls was a go-getter; he was bold and quick enough to order his soldiers to fight with the guards of Buckingham Palace, which was a sacred place.
However, Carls was hesitant, unable to make a decision. The man’s warning felt more frightening than ever.
“Compared to other men, I must say you are stronger than most of them, but…”
The man skimmed past the faces of the White Lion unit members as though he was evaluating items. Then he snickered and laughed at the soldiers.
“But that’s not enough. You cannot kill all of the monsters in the Royal Observatory in three days with these soldiers. I am sure these soldiers will get wiped out in three minutes instead.”
“You are out of your mind!”
The twenty members of the unit who fought the guards of the palace had some attitude issues, despite their spectacular performance. As a result, Carls had always placed them in the rear. Despite the penalty, the twenty members were always proud of the fact that they were part of the White Lion unit.
Now, the man who was sitting on the window had just insulted the twenty men’s prides.
The rest of the team did not move at all, since their commander, Carls, did not issue any order. However, the twenty members who were rather undisciplined moved first.
Hisss!
A crack opened right behind the man. One of the unit members had opened a space behind the man and got inside. Then the soldier appeared from the crack and attempted to stab the man’s back.
Boom!
A flash of lightning stroke and the unit member who tried to attack the man was burned to death immediately and fell to the floor. The man did not even turn around to look at the soldier.
Crackle!
Then a flame suddenly erupted from the man’s back, and it quickly covered the entire room.
Lieutenant General Carls started to feel overwhelming mana oozing out from the man. The mana was so powerful and overwhelming that the general felt as though he was falling into an abyss. He then started to breathe heavily.
The White Lion unit members prepared to attack. The soldiers realized that they could no longer wait for their commander’s approval. Otherwise, they might all die helplessly.
“Ahhh!”
The soldiers stretched their feet. Three of them tried to charge at the man, and they got caught by the flame. The soldiers attempted to use various skills, which were related to water or healing, but their efforts were futile, as they could not extinguish the flame.
The flame mercilessly burned until the target was completely burnt, and his life was drained.
Tip-tap. Tip-tap.
The man started walking. A few other unit members tried to attack the man, but they all died like moths that dived into the fire.
The man was way too powerful. Never had the general felt such a large difference in power. Carls had met demons, who were known as masters of monsters, in the past, but even back then, he had not felt such an overwhelming gap of power.
The general then spoke out loud.
“Stop!”
Carls was sweating, and his back was already wet.
“Sir, that man is killing our members…”
The rest of the team were eager to fight the man, but the general did not approve of the fight.
“That man is in a different league. You cannot do anything against this man.”
The general was sure that the man was a different animal than other monsters.
Such a large power gap reminded the general of demons, who had invaded the Earth and brought changes to this world. Dungeons were their base camps, and they used their monsters to attack mankind.
Lieutenant General Carls was a smart man. He knew when to attack and when to retreat. He realized that the man was almost invincible.
At the same time, he knew that he had to protect the queen from the threat at all costs, even his death.
The queen was a symbolic figure and a leader of all. If she perished, the entire United Kingdom would be doomed, and its people would become hopeless. There was no future to a country whose people were in despair.
Gulping, the general spoke to the man.
“Who are you? And what do you want?”
The man’s black eyes were cold and his footsteps heavy as iron. He slowly approached the general and laughed in a mocking manner.
No one had ever behaved so outrageously in front of Queen Mary and Lieutenant General Carls.
Then the man spoke.
“I am Randalf, one of the archdukes. I am here to give you both hope and despair.”
“Archduke.”
The general quietly groaned. The word “archduke” terrified him.
He knew more about the archdukes than anyone else did. In fact, he knew quite a lot of secrets about demons, including the ranks among demons and the presence of seventy-two dungeons.
And out of all the demons in this world, archdukes were the strongest and the most powerful.
The only archduke who had shown themselves to mankind was Ariel Diablo. She let herself and her name be known to the public and launched attacks on humans. As a result, the leaders of different countries, almost all of them, knew about Ariel.
Her power was tremendous, so no human could stop her. It was said that even the proud Knights Templar gave up. Other groups of awakened heroes, such as the Freemasonry and Illuminati, were more or less the same. Such groups were known to be the most influential and powerful groups of awakened heroes throughout the history of mankind.
Lieutenant General Carls had been sure that his soldiers were as powerful as the members of those groups. Despite their outstanding performance, the general still believed that the archdukes were different stories.
Had their opponents been something like a marquis, Carls thought that they could have had chances. However, he believed that they had no chance against the archdukes. They were simply not powerful enough.
Despite the obvious loss, the general hid his fear in front of the archduke. One must not show their back to a beast. Instead, one should open their wide and confront the enemy. That would increase the slightest chance of survival.
Unfortunately, the beast in this case was too dangerous. The man’s scrutinizing eyes were like those of a snake. He scanned through every single part of the general.
“You have no chance.”
That was all he said, but the general immediately realized the meaning behind the simple line. The “you,” in this case, did not mean just Carls himself. Instead, it meant the entire mankind; the man was implying that the entire mankind, no matter what they did or how hard they tried, could not defeat demons.
The man spoke with much confidence as though his words were truth.
Carls could not respond to the man. He did not know why he could not speak a word. It could be the overwhelming presence of the archduke or lack of confidence. Perhaps deep in his mind, the general agreed with the man that mankind had no chance against demons.
“I will give you a chance.”
“…chance?”
“Demons will gather at the Royal Observatory of Greenwich. The other three archdukes and their subordinates, including demons and monsters, will assemble. The only chance that mankind has is this gathering.”
“…!”
Lieutenant General Carls and the rest of the people in the room opened their eyes wide.
One of the challenges of fighting demons was the fact that they were spread out all over the world. If all of the demons gathered in one place, humans could bombard them with modern weapons. There had been cases where some soldiers killed high monsters with nuclear weapons.
“Why are you telling us about this? It could be a trick.”
The man laughed at the question.
“The only reason that mankind still survives is the competition between demons. Had demons not competed with each other, all of you would have become extinct.”
The archduke’s words sounded somewhat convincing.
In fact, ever since demons intruded this world, humans could not even strike back once. The demons quickly conquered strategically important locations and neutralized modern weapons. Without sufficient supplies, all the weapons and vehicles such as fighter jets were nothing more than heavy pieces of metals.
After the modern weapons were neutralized, merciless massacre began.
Lieutenant General Carls wanted to argue back.
However, as soon as he stared into the man’s eyes, his mind went blank.
“Think wisely.”
The man disappeared like the wind after that.
Where the man stood a few seconds ago were now piles of shiny stones.
They were cores, which one could only get from dungeons by hunting monsters. There were different kinds of cores, and high cores were very valuable, as they consisted less than 0.001 percent of all the cores.
All of the cores in the piles were all high or even highest cores.
With such a large amount of cores, one could make dozens of weapons with strong magic. It would be even possible to make some unique grade weapons. If one was lucky, he or she could even get epic grade armors and weapons, which were very rare in nature.
“I don’t know what he’s trying to do.”
Sighing, Lieutenant General Carls frowned.
The man offered an apple, but the general wasn’t sure if it was just a normal apple or a poisoned one. It could be a trick, but if the information was real, the gathering of demons would be an opportunity for mankind.
Everyone in the room, including Carls, was now looking at one person as though they were asking for her decision.
Queen Mary was calmly looking at the window. The lady was the hope of the United Kingdom, and her eyes were still shining brightly.
Lieutenant General Carls saw the slightest hope in the queen, who now had the power to make the ultimate decision.
