Chapter 149 Bad Hunch Confirmed
This was the least they wanted. Letting out a quiet swear, Gusu Liang dragged Gu Qiang to her back, then said to Jin Ye and Su Ge who were also in great disbelief, “Take Miss Infanta out of the palace if necessary.”
Back in Xiaoyao Mountain, Shen Qianshan had made it clear to them that the whole meaning of their existence was to protect Gu Qiang.
Surrounded by the torches, their faces were illuminated under the flickering light, feeling a bit hot.
Shen Qiangwei walked out of the torchlight, still dressing in white with that plain look on her face. Even at this moment, she couldn’t help feeling timid when she saw Gu Qiang, who was as delicate and pretty as ever. Even the white cloth couldn’t hide the gracefulness of her movement that nobody would forget.
Taking back her look, she spoke up, “You are here, Gu Qiang. Have you considered the Third Prince’s proposition? If you agree to marry him, you can take Gu Huaian right away and save all the trouble.”
It must have been hard for a woman of Shen Zhongbai to say this. She must be either love Shen Zhongbai very deeply or cherish no feelings for him at all.
Honestly speaking, Gu Qiang had once wavered at Shen Zhongbai’s suggestion. It’s only marrying him; she could do it with her eyes closed and save all the troubles. And her life, be it good or bad, must be better and more comfortable than now.
But in her heart, there had been a voice repeatedly telling her that she shouldn’t do it. This was indeed the last thing she wanted to do. She told herself numerous times that she would settle with any man but never Shen Zhongbai. She would rather forever remain single than become his wife.
Instead of giving her answer, Gu Qiang asked Shen Qiangwei another question, “What if I still say no? What is Shen Zhongbai going to do with me?
There was a light flashed across Shen Qiangwei’s eyes; she looked happy. Seeing this, Gu Qiang instantly understood that Shen Qiangwei was only here to carry out the task; she must not want to see Gu Qiang accept Shen Zhongbai’s offer.
What was Shen Zhongbai thinking? How could he ask his woman to make peace with another one? Was there anything wrong with his head?
“You know he won’t hurt you. But he doesn’t mind killing everyone who helps you,” Shen Qiangwei replied. Then she waved her hand, and all men holding torches started to draw closer.
Gusu Liang sneered, as though she had never considered these people would be a threat.
Looking at each other, Jin Ye and Su Ge said, “So it is not as simple as we expected. Anyway, there hasn’t been a chance for us to show off our abilities for long. Let’s get to work.”
How could they still be so calm in a moment like this? And cheering each other up? Gu Qiang was agitated, thinking they were not serious at all. But with a second thought, she changed her mind; there was no need to create a tense atmosphere.
Then Gu Qiang drew out a dagger from her pocket, which was given by Gusu Liang for self-defense. Gusu Liang hadn’t expected that she was still carrying it with her.
Gu Qiang said, “Just do your job. I can protect myself.”
Before the sound of her voice died away, the men holding torches started their attack; the battle began.
Apparently, Jin Ye and Su Ge were already used to it, and they started fighting the moment they rushed into the chaos with hard strikes. Paying no attention to who they were fighting against, they just swept away all the people in their way, and soon, all those who were near them were taken down.
Holding her dagger firmly, Gu Qiang hid quietly in a corner. Instead of being scared, she thought Su Ge and Jin Ye were too brutal with their attacks. Had she joined the battle, she might as well be hit, and that would be such a tragedy.
With a blink of an eye, all people were taken down, lying flat on the ground and groaning loudly in pain. But nobody has been attracted here.
Gu Qiang understood that even though Shen Zhongbai hadn’t officially ascended his throne, his power had stretched to everywhere in this country like flooding water; soon everyone would be drowned even before his notice.
Shen Qiangwei stood there in full disbelief and embarrassment, not expecting that her men would fail so quickly. And before she noticed it, Jin Ye and Su Ge moved close and seized her at her collar. She wanted to duck them but wasn’t quick enough. Although she could do martial arts, it was like a joke in front of Jin Ye and Su Ge.
After a few struggles, she was lifted by Jin Ye, who uttered a few words softly at her ear. “You have devoted all yourself to Shen Zhongbai, helping him with everything. But have you ever thought about what he would do for you in return? Does he care about your life?”
His question brought Shen Qiangwei’s struggle to a halt. She froze up there as though she was pondering about it. After a long while, she looked up to Jin Ye and said, “It’s none of your business.”
Jin Ye threw her on the ground, treading her under his foot and surveying his sword under the moonlight. “Women are really troublesome. You worked so hard for a man, but in the end, he abandoned you for another woman. Why would you still choose to be on his side?”
Jin Ye and Su Ge were all outsiders; in their eyes, Shen Zhongbai was doing this for Gu Qiang, which had nothing to do with Shen Qiangwei. If so, why would Shen Qiangwei keep helping him? They admired such devotion but couldn’t help finding it odd.
Woman’s love was really hard to understand. What a mystery!
“You know nothing! How dare you judge me here?” snapped Shen Qiangwei, then she stopped struggling, dropped to her knees, and cried; she didn’t know what she wanted.
Shen Zhongbai would soon become the Emperor, and she was closer to him than Gu Zhihua. She even knew that Shen Zhongbai could give her the title she desired. But as a matter of fact, she had never wanted much, only wishing Shen Zhongbai could treat her better than other women.
She knew perfectly well that nobody could challenge Gu Qiang’s place in Shen Zhongbai’s heart, and she would like to give in.
Gu Qiang was the first woman that Shen Zhongbai had a crush on. In that case, she didn’t mind getting second place in his heart.
It’s really not much. But she gradually realized that she had lost many things for it.
She could no longer find another reason for Shen Zhongbai to love her as she started to hate herself.
But did she have another choice? Apparently not. So far, there had been many women envying her for the luxurious life she had. Now at the peak, she couldn’t fall, or she would be laughed at by those people who were waiting for her to fail.
Now, it seemed those people would have their wishes fulfilled.
The lights around them were gradually fading out. Shen Zhongbai stood quietly far away in the corner, watching how Shen Qiangwei fell onto the ground. She was indeed a beautiful woman and looked more elegant and graceful in those extravagant dressings.
Nobody knew why Shen Zhongbai took her back, only thinking he was attracted by the courtesan’s beautiful looks.
Like when people were appreciating a piece of artwork, they didn’t care who the painter was, only the beauty of the artwork itself.
Only Shen Zhongbai knew that it was because Shen Qiangwei had a similar face to Gu Qiang.
Therefore, he gave all his love for Gu Qiang to this woman, who turned out to be a grateful person. Sometimes, he even thought about whether he could truly fall in love with her once he got Gu Qiang.
Once a man got the woman he lusted for, he no longer cherished her. Then he would return to the one who always smiled at him, waiting for him no matter what he did.
But now, seeing Shen Qiangwei trampled under Jin Ye’s foot even before he made Gu Qiang his, Shen Zhongbai was totally stunned.
“Your Highness, do we need to take them down?” asked the guards beside him.
Once he gave his order, a lot of people would be attracted here. After all, he was not yet the true Emperor at this moment.
He was only using Gu Huaian as a threat to make Gu Qiang accept his proposal. But in his heart, he was still hoping, wishing Gu Qiang would fall in love with him herself, at least to show him her gratitude.
After a short silence, Shen Zhongbai spoke up in a plain voice, “Let them go.”
The guard was confused. Shen Qianshan only had two elite men with him, which was not challenging at all as they far outnumbered them. The victory would be no doubt theirs, even though it meant the death of some of his brothers and a post battle cleaning.
Stamping his feet, the guard got quite anxious. But he could do nothing except to watch Jin Ye taking his foot off Shen Qiangwei. Then the door of the yard where Gu Huaian was arrested opened; Shen Qianshan and a woman walked out of it, carrying Gu Huaian who seemed to be at his last gasp. It was hard to recognize who they were as they were all cloaked in white.
Shen Zhongbai’s eyes squinted, changing his mind; he couldn’t let Gu Qiang leave in this way.
