Chapter 145 Abyss of Suffering
Tears were pouring down Gu Zhiyan’s face. Though Ting Feng had been quick in helping her wipe out some, more were spilled out from her eyes.
When she finally got steadier, she forced out a smile, “Sister, will things be different if I am not a mistress’s daughter?”
Knowing who she was, Gu Qiang showed no surprise at her words. “Zhiyan, what you should blame is not your identity but yourself. Why do you allow yourself to be at mercy of others?” said Gu Qiang in a plain tone, looking into Gu Zhiyan’s eyes.
Gu Zhiyan looked up to Gu Qiang with great astonishment.
Why did she allow herself to be at the mercy of others? What a good question. Never having a chance to fight back, she could only lick her wound in the dark like a poor animal.
“Sister, how could you be at peace with everything? You know there is nothing I can do,” said Gu Zhiyan, crying, which made Gu Qiang annoyed.
She never had a good time in her life. Although it might look quite different from others’ eyes, it was filled with hardships that only she knew.
She stood no position in lecturing others about how to live a life.
As all people could only live for once, nobody deserved to live a miserable life no matter who he was.
“Fine, then leave yourself to Jiang Min as you have got used to being a pushover. Don’t you think so?” said Gu Qiang, having her tea.
There were many vulnerable people under heaven, and they were pathetic for a reason. But Gu Qiang knew there were still exceptions.
She would rather believe that Gu Zhiyan was simply being too kind. She still had a chance to turn the table as long as she fought back.
Gu Zhiyan wiped her eyes again, thinking. When she finally calmed down, she broke up the silence, “Sister, I can do it, right?”
Gu Qiang gave a smile to her with no reply.
Gu Zhiyan turned to Gusu Liang, “Miss, could you please escort me to my mother’s place?”
Her mother was Prime Minister’s third mistress. She used to serve as a maid until she slept with Gu Zhizhang for one night and born him a daughter.
Everything became different after she was with the Prime Minister’s child.
Once Gu Zhiyan was born, she didn’t need to do anything except for staying in her house, watching the change of seasons with flowers blooming and withering. Who knew whether this was also a kind of punishment or not?
With their bodies strained by all the work that needed to be done, many people kept complaining about how they couldn’t find time to look around and enjoy the small blessings. However, those who seemed capable of doing it were also troubled by the pain that nobody knew.
The sky darkened. In a clean but deserted house southwest of the Prime Minister Mansion, Gu Zhiyan threw herself into her mother’s arms.
Around thirty, this woman looked younger than she was, with a delicate face but no expensive jewels or make ups. The kind of innocence and natural beauty of her were stunning.
Even Gusu Liang, who had seen many gorgeous ladies, was amazed that she would see one here in the Gu Family, not to mention this woman was over thirty years old.
She didn’t know how to describe this feeling. Time was quite a mysterious thing; though this woman had led a poor life, she had got what other women didn’t have.
Cupping Gu Zhiyan’s face in her hands, she looked at her daughter carefully. Gu Zhiyan was not as beautiful as her but still looked very young and pretty.
“Yan, how are you doing?” asked the third mistress in an amiable voice, as gentle as warm water.
She was not doing well. She cried when Ting Feng asked her the same question, and now her mother’s asking was only making her feel worse. Fortunately, she held back her tears this time.
Seeing Gusu Liang stepping aside after a courtesy, the third mistress asked, “Are you Qiang’s maid? What a pretty girl. How is she looking now? She must have grown up.”
“Infanta Luoping is now a gorgeous lady. Many people like her,” answered Gusu Liang in a soft voice, smiling.
Suddenly learning her mistake, the third mistress added, “So Qiang is now an Infanta, I can’t call her by her pet name anymore.”
Gu Zhiyan looked at her mother in bewilderment. It seemed her mother had been very close to Gu Qiang when she was young.
She didn’t find anything wrong with Gu Qiang, only except the coldness exuded by her that rejected everyone’s approaching.
Gu Qiang had never been like that before. It seemed she had lost many things after she lost her memory.
She had always been an apathetic person, and now she became even more heartless.
“What do you know about Infanta Luoping’s past?” asked Gusu Liang, with her smile disappearing.
Gu Qiang’s past was closely related to what had happened to her mother, which was so complicated that it haunted her like nightmares even when she was about to marry.
The third mistress’s eyes flashed. “I used to be the first lady’s maid, so I have witnessed Qiang’s growing up. But the first lady was not on good terms with his lordship back then, as he kept catting around. Gentle and kind as her ladyship was, she just let him do whatever he wanted, otherwise, how could Ye get her position?” she answered, smiling.
Gusu Liang frowned, deep in thought. She knew nobody could tell what had happened exactly back then, and whom to blame. There was no point in finding the truth anymore as it had been so long.
After all, someone had already lost their lives.
Gusu Liang fully understood what she meant. Jiang Rou hadn’t been getting on well with Gu Zhizhang, so as Jiang Rou’s maid, the third mistress took the opportunity and got pregnant with Gu Zhizhang’s child.
Although the third mistress was a good-looking woman, she stole her lady’s husband, for which Gusu Liang couldn’t forgive her.
Actually, how the third mistress ended up now was quite foreseeable. Gu Zhizhang only got her pregnant. Her life didn’t change much just because she gave him a baby. A sparrow could never become a phoenix, and she should have been aware of that.
Even for Jiang Rou who was at peace with everything, her own maid’s betrayal wouldn’t be something she could easily take in, as it would only make her more disappointed and heartbroken.
Seeing the third mistress have no intention to apologize, Gusu Liang nodded at her, drew close, and then said in a cold voice, “Third mistress, my lady will see to what had happened to her biological mother one day. If you know anything, you’d better tell me, or my lady won’t forgive you once she finds it out herself.”
Gusu Liang was a plain-looking girl, but she had a sense of chill on her, which was usually hidden up when she was on duty. But today, she exuded it all, trying to scare the third mistress.
The third mistress must have got something as she had managed to live here in peace for all these years without being kicked out or totally forgotten.
But the third mistress was not intimidated by her; instead, she smiled, “I am glad to see that Qiang has such a loyal girl by her side. As her stepmother, I sincerely hope you can serve her with all your heart, and don’t let her get hurt.”
Then she invited Gu Zhiyan into the room, leaving Gusu Liang outside.
Without any hesitation, Gusu Liang hurried back to Qingshui House.
Gu Qiang and Ting Feng were taking stock of the presents, which were all very valuable. Looking back at her room, Ting Feng heaved an enormous sigh, “My lady, are you going to buy another house with these? I have bought you one with the money you gave me last time. It is located at the foot of the mountain with very good sceneries.”
Gu Qiang nodded, looking satisfied. “Great, I know you are a cautious girl. Now keep playing low and don’t let others know it. The house is our last resort. Once it got exposed, I am afraid all our lives will be in danger.”
Ting Feng nodded, agreeing at her words. She was glad about her lady’s increased cautiousness, as there were many people hidden around since she woke up, wishing to set her up.
“My lady, I would like to ask you about another thing, Chui Xue…” said Ting Feng. She still couldn’t accept the fact that Chui Xue had committed such indecency in their room and started to have a very bad impression on her.
There was nothing wrong with falling in love with a man, as long as she didn’t bring trouble to her lady.
“Well, it’s not a serious mistake. Go to find out who that man was, switch her into the kitchen, and don’t alert anyone. I can’t have her by my side anymore,” replied Gu Qiang.
Women would have weaknesses once they fell in love. With a few pretty words in bed, the man could get out whatever he wanted from her mouth.
Lowering her head, Ting Feng left the room.
The next morning, when Gu Qiang was having breakfast in the yard, she saw Gusu Liang jump over the wall, looking pale.
Gusu Liang had a big heart, now she must have encountered something serious, or she wouldn’t be in such a panic.
Gu Qiang wiped her mouth and sat up, in case she would fall down the chair if it was terrible news.
Hurried forward, Gusu Liang opened her mouth, her voice trembling, “His Majesty is not doing well. I heard from the hidden guards from the palace that the Empress thought it was Mr. Gu’s fault and she had put him in prison. What shall we do now, my lady?”
Though mentally prepared, Gu Qiang felt the world swirling the moment she heard the news, her ears humming. Supporting herself with the table, she let out a few trembling words that even herself couldn’t hear, “I am going into the palace. I need to take my brother back.”
