Chapter 142 Message From Brother
Suddenly, Gu Qiang’s back straightened, she bit her lips.
She knew she was enjoying Gu Huaian’s love, but she just couldn’t feel at ease as this marriage was obtained at the cost of his freedom.
Walking back to Changing, she now understood why the Princess had put up a screen here. What words was Gu Huaian trying to tell her? It must be extremely important. She felt her heart was torn apart by both the curiosity and fear to know the answer.
It must not be any gossip about the imperial family, or Gu Huaian wouldn’t have trusted Changning with it. He was clever enough not to speak ill of the Emperor or the Empress in front of a princess. In that case, there was only one possibility left, he wanted to tell her his last words.
Quietly surveying Gu Qiang’s expressions, Changning hesitated. Although she wanted to address it in a light tone, she found it an impossible task to do at this moment.
Finally, after a long time chewing on words, Changning broke up the silence. “In my opinion, he was just being over-worried. He said if he… can’t… make it back this time, you can sell all things in Tong An Medicine Shop and take the money as a dowery. And don’t blame your mother, for she died so young that she couldn’t provide any money for you.”
Changning never knew time could go so slow. As a sedate lady, she had never been bothered by anything before. However, when Gu Huaian was saying these in front of her, her heart was beating violently fast, and her eyes went blank. She even didn’t know what to tell him in reply.
It seemed that she finally found the long-lost feeling of being young.
It must have been a misconception, as she had a much richer experience than ordinary people. But feelings have nothing to do with experiences. She was not a fool.
How could anyone be able to control his heart?
Standing petrified in the roaring wind blowing from all directions, Gu Qiang felt there was a deep hollow inside her body. It seemed her heart had quickly gone dry and stopped beating.
Suddenly, she dropped to her knees, shivering, with her eyes fixed upon the ground and tears pouring out. Wondering whether she had made a mistake, Changning opened her mouth but found that she didn’t even know how to comfort this poor girl. After all, this was not what the high-born ladies were good at.
She didn’t know what’s wrong with serving as an imperial doctor. Although the Emperor was not wise, he was at least not cruel. So things couldn’t be as bad as what Gu Huaian thought, nor did he need to leave any last word for it.
Seeing Gu Qiang just kneeling there, Gusu Liang stepped forward to carry her up, then she whispered in her ear, “My lady, don’t worry. Things are not out of control yet. And Mr. Gu might only be preparing for the worst situantion.”
How could Gu Qiang not understand it? Even though she knew Gu Huaian was safe at this moment, she couldn’t help feeling sad as he was suffering merely for her.
She must have been on great terms with Gu Huaian before she lost her memories. Otherwise, why would he do this to pay her back?
Taking a deep breath, Gu Qiang stood up; she wiped her tears and suppressed a faint smile, “Infanta Ziyan, didn’t you just say you want a tour in the yard, let’s go.”
Ziyan gave Changning an awkward look; she didn’t think Gu Qiang had the mood for the stroll at this moment. This woman must be extremely tough inside as she managed to suppress her sorrow so quickly.
Once swallowed in, the sorrow would be digested; if not, it would burst out and blast everything staying around, which was the risk Ziyan was facing right now.
She was so regretful that she wanted her tongue cut. Why had she asked Gu Qiang to give her a tour? With a hint in her eyes, she looked at Princess Changning for help. But Changning ignored her signal and said, “Go ahead, you two can take a walk.”
Then she reached out her hand and closed the screen, as though she was going to have a nap.
The backyard of Prime Minister Mansion was big, and now it was packed with guests, all of whom were looking at Gu Qiang and Ziyan with curiosity, thinking how beyond reach these two Infanta were, and how difficult it would be to have a good relationship with people like them, as birds of a feather flock together.
Crossing another corner, they arrived at the Qingshui House, where there was quite a noise going on with the guest’s presents stacked everywhere. Ting Feng and Chui Xue had never expected that the place where people rarely visited would witness such a hustle and bustle today, which made them feel quite proud.
When Ziyan was about to walk in following Gu Qiang’s footsteps, she found Gu Qiang stopped abruptly at Ting Feng’s warning glances.
It turned out she did it all in vain because Ye Mu quickly showed up in front of Gu Qiang. He was wearing a purple outfit, with delicate plum flowers embroidered along the cuff of the sleeves and his hair neatly tied with a purple knot behind his head. But the calmness on his face now disappeared.
Popping her head, Ziyan got stunned at the sight of him. She opened her mouth but couldn’t find any word to say even though she wanted to. How could someone as outgoing as her lose her word?
Because Ye Mu spoke first.
His voice was as cold as ever, but with a note of gentleness in it, like the rivers in spring, freezing, but signaling the coming of spring.
At this moment, Ziyan could hear nothing but her own heartbeat; her spring came.
“I heard you are going to marry the Ninth Duke, Miss Infanta. Congratulations,” said Ye Mu slowly; each of his words was like a hammer on Gu Qiang’s heart, embarrassing her.
She did nothing wrong as she had never promised Ye Mu anything. But now, he acted as if she betrayed him.
“Thanks,” replied Gu Qiang in a plain voice, as though she hadn’t sensed the unwillingness in his eyes.
“I thought we could take our time. But who would have known the Ninth Duke acted so fast? Destiny is indeed a curious thing,” said Ye Mu, with an inexplicable expression on his face.
Ziyan finally came around to what was happening right now. She walked over to Ye Mu and looked into his eyes. Did this man mean Gu Qiang was the woman he loved?
“What do you mean? You want to marry my sister as well?” asked Ziyan directly; she had always been a girl frank with her words, and she wouldn’t easily give up.
It seemed Ye Mu hadn’t recognized her until now. He wanted to take back the disdainful looks in his eyes but was too late.
How could he not know what kind of feelings this girl was cherishing for him? He was old enough.
But he just couldn’t accept what he had got from Gu Qiang. It was the Gu Family who invited him here and promised him with their daughter. How could they break their words, and suddenly marry her to somebody else even though he hadn’t cultivated any adoration for her?
This was unacceptable! The Gu Family must haven’t taken him seriously. Although he had always been a good-tempered man, he couldn’t allow himself to be treated this way.
“Can’t I?” snorted Ye Mu; his voice was calm, as though he was determined to get Gu Qiang as his wife.
Biting her lips, Ziyan tried so hard to hold back her tears, then she spoke out with a low voice, “Do you know who I am?”
“Of course, Infanta Ziyan, I am honored to make your acquaintance…”
Before he could finish his words, Ziyan’s eyes went red. Acquaintance? They had met in the teahouse of the capital before. She remembered how he was sitting quietly in the corner of the second floor with his face shining under the sun like a jade sculpture. Despite the cold expressions he had, she could sense a note of warmness from him.
“You are Ye Mu, nephew of Ye from the south. And now with one more thing, you like my sister?” Ziyan quickly helped him finish his remaining words.
She once imagined saying these in front of him to see how surprised he would be when he found out that he had got so much attention from a woman.
But now, she only felt heartbroken; she didn’t hate Gu Qiang, just thinking that Ye Mu might not be her kismet.
Like what she had expected, Ye Mu froze up.
Educated and smart as he was, he quickly came around and smiled, “How honored! I didn’t know Infanta Ziyan knows so much about me. But my heart has already been occupied by Gu Qiang, and I am really feeling upset as she is going to be another man’s wife.”
Ziyan didn’t reply, her eyes were now dimmed like fading stars. Then she left immediately with her maid.
“What are you doing, Mr. Ye? I have always admired you as a righteous person. Who would have known that you were so shameless and mean?” said Gu Qiang as she stood there straightened up her back, her face was still grim.
Not expecting to be scolded like this, Ye Mu felt quite hurt. But he still managed to pull himself together and replied, “You call me mean? Well, I doubt anyone can do it better than your family! Although there are no political officials in my family, we can’t let ourselves be humiliated this way! Your family promised to take you as my wife, and now you are marrying the Ninth Duke? Have you ever considered what an awkward position you put me in?”
Gu Qiang couldn’t help bursting out into laughter, “What does it have anything to do with me? Did I ask you to come here and marry me? As an educated person, how can you not know that being soft with others is a terrible mistake?”
Gu Qiang really couldn’t understand why he would allow himself to be a puppet for his parents and do everything he was asked to. It was the last thing she would do.
