Chapter 109 You Have to Go
Before dawn, Gu Qiang’s carriage had already arrived near the border of the capital. It was rushing forward as the trees on the road quickly flashed away from their sight. Gu Qiang wrapped herself tightly in her coat while Gusu Liang took out the blanket she brought and put it on her. Gusu Liang said to her in a low voice, “My lady, do you know where Mr. Gu is right now? If we rush over without any information, I’m afraid we will get lost, let alone find him.”
Before Gusu Liang finished her words, Gu Qiang noticed an overturned carriage lying on the downhill path not far away from them, and a man was standing on top of it.
She could not see what he was wearing clearly. What she saw was only his tall, slim figure on the carriage. He was standing there alone, facing a dozen of men in black. Their dark clothes melted into the night, making them hard to be seen. Gu Qiang rubbed her forehead and sighed. This was such a long, horrible night. She felt like she was in a long, long nightmare where she knew it was a dream but couldn’t wake up from it. The desperate feeling, enemies she didn’t know where they were hiding, and her amnesia – everything was so unsettling.
She began to hope she could regain her memories as soon as possible so that she could know what to do. She felt the urge to do something, a goal she had to achieve, but she had no idea what it was, her brain was in a total blank. It was a disaster.
Gusu Liang noticed the situation outside. She tried hard to look at those people. After a little while, she took a deep breath of shock and said in a trembling voice, “That’s Mr. Gu…”
“What?” Gu Qiang stood up immediately, but her strength couldn’t support her weight, and her body was shivering hard. She struggled to steady herself and said to Gusu Liang, “Are they in a standoff? If so, can you help me save him?”
Gusu Liang shook her head, “Master has sent many men to protect him secretly. If they can’t even save him, it’s pointless for me to go. My lady, we should leave first.”
Gu Qiang turned her head to look at the maid quietly. Gusu Liang was the closest person around her after she woke up, but she didn’t expect that this maid, who had been following her and helping her all this time, would let her down.
Gu Qiang didn’t utter another word. She got out of the carriage in silence while her body was uncontrollably trembling hard. She couldn’t hold back this flustered feeling deep inside, and the headache was eating up all of her energy. She would faint at any second, and right now, she was dependent on her will to keep herself standing.
Gusu Liang saw the stern and firm look on her face, knowing her insistence. To be more precise, she was using herself to threaten Gusu Liang, to ask for the latter’s help.
Because she knew Gusu Liang wouldn’t leave her alone here. If Shen Qianshan didn’t like her, he wouldn’t interfere in her life and make Gusu Liang stay with her. She was making a quiet protest to force Gusu Liang to obey her. If Gusu Liang really wanted to stand by her side, she had to become her real maid instead of a friend and do everything she said. A maid was a maid, and a maid could never be her master’s friend.
Gusu Liang reached out and pressed her down on the soft couch inside the carriage. She gave Gu Qiang a bitter smile, “Let me do it.”
The rain was ceasing. Gu Qiang wrapped her coat tighter and looked at the place ahead. Gu Huaian only had a thin cape, which was dripping water. Those men in black had surrounded him. Once he moved, they might kill him at once.
“Who are you?” Gu Huaian’s voice sounded dull and calm on such a muggy, noisy rainy night. Surprisingly, he still acted extremely serene, as if he already expected it. He actually almost felt relieved when seeing those people show up in front of him.
Because he had been curious as to why Gu Qiang didn’t allow him to leave the capital. He thought this young girl was just overthinking.
Now he finally had the chance to understand how hard she was trying to keep him safe. But unfortunately, he would probably let her down this time. He still couldn’t get the herb even at the cost of his life. He only hoped Qiang, his younger sister, could find the one who truly loved her and understood her in the future without him. It was impossible to say these in front of her now, so he secretly made the wish in his heart and pretended that she would hear it by him doing so.
The leading enemy made a gesture, and then all the men suddenly jumped up. Seeing their move, Gu Huaian closed his eyes, losing all hope.
Suddenly, they heard an uproar nearby. A group of men in white rushed out from the border, dashing toward those black-clothes men with a sword in their hands. Those white clothes lit up the dark night, and their movement exuded an aura of aggression as if they had been holding back the grudge against the enemies for a long time.
Gusu Liang froze in the rain for a second and realized these men in white were people sent by her master to protect Gu Huaian before.
She thought these men were all defeated, but actually, they were lurking around, waiting for a good chance to attack.
She hurriedly rushed up to Gu Huaian, grabbed him, and dragged him toward the carriage where Gu Qiang was. However, the moment she turned around, she found the carriage was gone.
What just happened? Gusu Liang panicked as she realized she messed it up. She was here to rescue Gu Huaian, but she shouldn’t lose Gu Qiang. She knew every life had equal weight, but in Gusu Liang’s eyes, Gu Qiang’s life was her own life. She had to protect her no matter what happened.
Gusu Liang’s sudden appearance stunned Gu Huaian. If she was here, did it mean Gu Qiang was here as well? His younger sister was truly a stubborn girl!
Gusu Liang released Gu Huaian immediately and started to yell worriedly, “My lady! My lady!”
Her scream pulled Gu Huaian back to reality. He turned around and asked coldly, “Where’s Qiang?”
“You don’t have the right to ask me. If it weren’t for you, would she still be here? Her body temperature hasn’t gone down yet due to the fever. Why couldn’t you just wait a bit longer until she felt better, and then figure out a solution together? Why did you have to leave at that moment?”
The rain hadn’t stopped yet. But on Gu Huaian’s face and body, beads of sweat were even more than raindrops.
He didn’t even feel this panic before when he was surrounded by the enemies. But right now, his missing sister made him flustered a lot. How come a person, who was here just now, disappeared all of a sudden?
His brain went totally blank. Meanwhile, people sent by Shen Qianshan had already got rid of all the men in black. They came up to meet Gusu Liang, and surprisingly, the leading person was Jin Ye.
Gusu Liang didn’t know what to say or where to look at. At that moment, she felt like only her death could somewhat make up for her mistake.
“The lady disappeared. Search for her immediately.” Gusu Liang’s face looked calm, but she was just pretending it. She was more aware of the consequences than anyone, and all she could do now was to find Gu Qiang.
The expression on Jin Ye’s face changed immediately. He waved a hand at his group, and those men in white dispersed at once.
Gu Huaian wanted to go with them, but his arm was grabbed by Gusu Liang. The maid said coldly, “Mr. Gu, please go back with me first. The lady went missing because of you. You’d better guarantee your own safety. I don’t want to let her down after we find her.”
Gu Huaian wanted to argue back, but he ended up staying silent, heading back to the capital under Gusu Liang’s escort.
After Gu Qiang woke up, she found herself lying on a comfortable bed as if she was sleeping on top of puffy clouds. Then the pain brought by the fever woke up along with her body. All of her limbs felt heavy and sour.
She closed her eyes to calm herself down. Then a woman wearing a dark red dress walked in with a food tray in her hands.
That woman was expressionless, but when she saw Gu Qiang, her eyes lit up. She seemed pleased by the good-looking appearance of the young girl on the bed.
Gu Qiang ignored the dishes she put on the table, grabbed her arm, and asked hurriedly, “Where am I?”
The woman took two steps back and said in embarrassment, “I don’t know about anything, my lady. You should have some good rest, and don’t try to think about leaving here.”
The woman’s reaction was confident and calm. She looked even fiercer than Gu Qiang, who tended to have more aggression than ordinary people. It seemed that she was already used to this kind of situation. Both threats and scares wouldn’t work on her at all.
Gu Qiang stood still in a daze, staring at the woman. Now she was sure this place was not in some duke’s mansion because this maid-like woman seemed well-trained, not as timid and soft as ordinary maids.
“Let me ask you one more time. What’s this place? You can choose not to say it, but…” Gu Qiang didn’t finish her words on purpose, and a trace of shock showed up on the woman’s face.
She didn’t expect such aggression from this young girl who looked like a weak, drowned rat when the master brought her here. But she wasn’t sure if the aggression was real or fake.
“I didn’t know you are such a character. But every woman thought they were different when they came here. Do you understand my master’s intention?” The woman’s tone almost sounded like praise.
Gu Qiang was speechless – how could she understand this master’s intention without knowing who he was? She shook her head at her, and the woman sneered. “You still don’t know. I guess you are nothing different than all the other ones.”
What was wrong with her? Gu Qiang stepped closer and approached her with a stern look. Someone had already helped her change into clean and dry clothes as the ones she wore before were hung neatly aside. Gu Qiang chuckled, and the look on her face turned extremely serious, “Either you get lost, let your master come out, or let me go!”
Her aggression startled the woman, but the maid kept telling herself that Gu Qiang was just faking it.
She stepped back, gave Gu Qiang a cold glare, walked out, and shut the door.
Gu Qiang searched around the room and decided to choose the teapot on the table as her weapon. She poured out the water inside and held it in front of her chest. Although it was made of ceramic, it might be able to save her life in a crucial moment.
Then she moved to the door and found it was locked from outside.
Luckily, the window was still open for ventilation. Gu Qiang remembered the heavy rain last night – at least in her memory, it was last night. But actually, she had no idea how long she had passed out and how she was brought here. She could only recall the shower-like raindrops. She was standing at the driver’s seat of the carriage. Her body was burning because of the fever, and the rain felt warmer once the water touched her body, which made her very uncomfortable. Her vision was blurred by the heavy rain, and she had to keep wiping the water off from her face. At a moment when she closed her eyes, she felt a sting on her neck as she fell off and lost consciousness.
The wind blew inside from the window, making her feel a bit chilly. She lifted her leg and was about to climb over as a man’s voice came from outside. He chuckled, “Are you going to use that chamber pot to attack me?”
Ch-Chamber pot?
Before she got the time to lift another leg and get out to see the man’s face, her body was suddenly hung in the air as someone carried her in his arms. An incredible fragrance enveloped her, and she felt like time had stopped for a moment. It smelled like the bright sunlight and the blooming wisteria flowers. It was soothing but also complicated. As the Prime Minister’s first daughter, she was familiar with all kinds of aromas, but she couldn’t tell which one this was.
The man was wearing a bright red coat with a crimson robe inside, and his body felt strong. In his arms, Gu Qiang turned her head and saw his face. It was an attractive face with delicate features – a tall nose, upturned eyes, and beautiful lips. It was hard for people to take their eyes off him. She looked at him quietly as he was sizing her up with a trace of pleasure in his eyes.
This face was gorgeous enough for any woman to fall in love with. However, Gu Qiang looked away after staring at him for only one short moment. She had seen many handsome men, and she didn’t find this one attractive enough to arouse her interest. Moreover, it was not the time for her to think about relationships or love.
