Chapter 108 A Sudden Accident
“Don’t worry. Leave it to me. You should have some good rest now. After you recover, we can go find your brother together.” Shen Qianshan gently caressed Gu Qiang’s sweaty forehead. Her body was burning due to the fever, and her skin felt a lot warmer than usual.
Gu Qiang still shook her head. She was aware of her situation than anyone else. She didn’t believe that she had already arranged everything before her amnesia. There must be something she didn’t remember. Her sixth sense told her not to let her older brother leave the capital, and she could feel the strong will from her heart. She’d better not ignore it.
Now she only had Shen Qianshan, but he didn’t choose to stand by her side.
Was herself the only one she could rely on?
She lay on the bed in despair, closed her eyes, and stopped talking. Doctor Li came inside, bringing a medicine box in his hand, followed by a sizable group of apprentices with their clothes wetted by the rain. Those young men all wore a curious look on their naive faces, excited to see such a rare amnesia case.
Shen Qianshan gave a cold glance to them and asked in a displeased voice, “Who are these people?”
Since Doctor Li had met all kinds of people, he immediately told that the man next to the infanta was the Ninth Duke since he was exuding a majestic, graceful temperament only the royals had.
“My lord, these people are all hired by Mr. Gu. He hopes they can help treat the infanta,” Doctor Li said respectfully.
Shen Qianshan suddenly flew into a rage, with his bulging eyes turning red. His voice was even louder than the thunder, echoing in the room, “Who do you think she is? Your little rat used for an experiment?”
Gu Qiang’s eyes were still close. She was still conscious but pretended she didn’t hear anything.
Shen Qianshan had no clue what she was thinking about, and he didn’t have the energy to figure it out now.
He had lost the chance to win Gu Qiang’s trust once. Now she needed help again, so he had to stay with her this time. Otherwise, he had no reason to show up in front of her.
Doctor Li gave him an awkward smile, not surprised at the duke’s weird behavior at all.
After all, a royal member like him always had a somewhat picky or strange personality. Shen Qianshan was like this, so was Shen Zhongbai.
Thinking about Shen Zhongbai, the old doctor’s eyes suddenly lit up, then he calmed himself down and turned back to the way he was before.
“There’s strength in numbers. We all hope that the infanta can recover faster with our help,” Doctor Li said calmly.
As an experienced old doctor, he wouldn’t be scared by this young man’s royal identity.
At this moment, Gu Qiang opened her eyes slowly, looking into Shen Qianshan’s eyes.
She was on the edge of losing her consciousness, but she struggled up and whispered in his ear, “Investigate him! Investigate him!”
Her voice was weak but anxious. After finishing her words, she fainted in Shen Qianshan’s arms as if she completed an important task and felt relieved.
Shen Qianshan was stunned for a second, then his eyes lit up. Even after she lost her memories, she was still that smart girl he knew.
Gusu Liang walked in on time as Shen Qianshan gave her a hint with his eyes. Receiving his signal, she immediately understood his intention.
He waved his hand at the doctors impatiently. Doctor Li still tried to stay but got threatened by the warning look on Shen Qianshan’s face.
The group of people felt a bit disappointed for not having the chance to treat a patient like Gu Qiang. Her sickness was a rare case in the capital. If they could have a thorough check or carry out treatment on her, it would be a great help for their career.
However, once they saw the Ninth Duke’s scary expression, they all left obediently.
People all said the Ninth Duke Shen Qianshan was the most amiable one among all the lords since what he chased after was peace of life instead of name and power.
However, they also knew that the Ninth Duke’s power could not be underestimated. There were two things that should never be done in this world – one was blindly trusting love; the other was underestimating the Ninth Duke’s power.
Having an easy-going personality didn’t mean anyone could offend him. As ordinary doctors, even if they were killed by the Ninth Duke “accidentally”, people wouldn’t say anything about it. All they could do now was to get away from potential danger as much as possible.
Doctor Li sighed as his eyebrows twisted into a frown, lost in his thoughts.
Soon after, Gusu Liang came back. Her clothes were soaked by the rain, and water was still dripping from her hair. She reported hurriedly before drying herself up, “Something is definitely wrong about that old doctor. He is a remote relative of Shen Zhongbai’s mother’s family. He had been around Gu Huaian for five years.”
His connection with Shen Zhongbai was not surprising, and everything made sense now. Someone must have distracted Gu Huaian and made him leave on purpose.
Before Gusu Liang finished her words, a shadow jumped into the room through the window. He landed and said in a stern tone without drying himself up, “My lord, Miss Su is not doing well. She asks you to return immediately, or she will jump off the cliff from the Xiaoyao Mountain.”
Shen Qianshan bit his lip hard. That woman was threatening him. But why did she choose to threaten him at this moment? What on earth was she thinking?
He lowered his head as his eyes fell on Gu Qiang, who was trembling hard, her clothes soaked in sweat.
Her situation was not any better than that woman. Shen Qianshan opened his mouth, having the urge to say something. The young girl in his arms obviously needed him. But that woman threatened him to go at the same time.
“You know, no one can threaten me,” he said coldly to the man who just arrived.
The man was Su Ge, Jin Ye’s older brother. These two had worked for Shen Qianshan since they were kids. They were the people who Shen Qianshan trusted the most and also knew everything about him.
Su Ge raised his eyes reluctantly, but his tone was firm, “My lord, you have to go.”
Su Ge didn’t say anything more, but his words already had enough weight. Miss Su’s father saved Shen Qianshan’s life once, and this was what he owed them. He couldn’t ignore her.
Apparently, Gusu Liang disagreed with Su Ge. She walked up and hurriedly said, “Master, you can’t leave. Our lady needs you the most right now. If you leave, she will be all alone by herself!”
Shen Qianshan was hesitant.
Su Ge slowly turned his head and sighed. Since he was older than Gusu Liang and Jin Ye, he tended to be calmer and more mature, having a generally mild attitude towards things. But this time, he had to act firmly.
“Liang, don’t you know how important Master Su is to our master? If anything bad happens to Miss Su, Master Su won’t go easy on him. Moreover, the infanta is sick, but her life is not in danger. With you guarding her here, won’t it be enough?” Su Ge said slowly, and his words were very reasonable. Gusu Liang opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but she felt that Su Ge wouldn’t understand it no matter what she said. Su Ge hadn’t had a taste of love between men and women, so he didn’t know how much weight a lover’s companionship could have when one was in despair.
Sometimes, men were too rational. If he never loved someone deeply, he would not know how hurtful this choice was.
She still tried to say something, but Shen Qianshan had already made up his mind. He walked up to Gusu Liang, patted her shoulder, and said solemnly, “Liang, take care of her. She only has you right now.”
Gusu Liang grabbed Shen Qianshan’s arm and kept shaking her head at him. She hoped he could stay because she knew Gu Qiang needed him.
His figure disappeared into the rain. Before Su Ge followed his master out, he comforted Gusu Liang, “Liang, I believe in you. You are the master’s only reliance now. This is exactly our job, right?”
Gusu Liang was trembling in anger. She turned around and saw Gu Qiang struggling up, who should be lying on the bed. She was so sick that her body became very heavy, making it hard to move.
She was gasping heavily, her face was covered with beads of sweat. But noticing Gusu Liang’s gaze, she still managed to give her a smile.
That smile stung Gusu Liang’s heart. She hurriedly rushed over, helped her up, and asked in a low voice, “My lady, what do you want? You can’t move too much right now.”
Gu Qiang felt so calm that even she herself felt surprised. She knew she shouldn’t be this calm, but she couldn’t control her emotions. In the end, that man still chose to leave her. So, love was indeed something that could not be trusted.
She could feel every beat of her heart, and there was clearly a feeling called disappointment deep down inside. Her brain and her heart seemed to be separated as if she was observing someone else’s emotions, but weirdly, she could still feel it at the same time. She didn’t remember anything, but her heart was agitated. It felt like subconsciously, she couldn’t accept what Shen Qianshan did. She started to doubt every word he had said and blame herself for not seeing his true colors earlier.
As she got up arduously, she couldn’t finish a sentence at one time, but her voice was still calm. “Prepare a carriage. We have to catch up with my brother. If Doctor Li works for Shen Zhongbai, what he told my brother must be fake. It’s what Shen Zhongbai wants my brother to hear on purpose. They are setting him up.”
Gusu Liang sized Gu Qiang up. Although the lady was in great pain, she still thought for other people, stayed rational, and had a clear idea about everything. This was the Gu Qiang she knew.
“My lady, it’s impossible. You know, Master is very concerned about you. If you leave here, my colleagues and I will be punished,” said Gusu Liang.
Now Gu Qiang couldn’t even guarantee her own safety, let alone others.
Gu Qiang’s clothes were soaked in sweat. She put on a coat and shook her head with a bitter smile. “He has no right to make me obey him. Everything I’m doing right now is my own business. I don’t want anyone else to be responsible for it or to interfere in my life.”
Gusu Liang sensed a trace of annoyance in her words. Her tone was calm and rational, but it sounded like she was complaining that Shen Qianshan left her alone here.
She still cared about Shen Qianshan, but she just didn’t show it.
“Even so, I need to be responsible for you. My lady, you can’t go,” Gusu Liang said firmly as if her insistence could change Gu Qiang’s mind. But clearly, it wouldn’t work.
