Alpha's Substitute Bride - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Not Here For You
Eloise’s POV:
“What? What’s happening?” Looking at Soren’s expression, I only felt a little scared.
My intuition told me something had happened to Atticus, but I still didn’t want to believe it.
“Don’t worry. You’ll know when you get there. But before that, I want to ask you a few questions.” He looked at me. Although his expression was still gentle, there was something else behind it.
He only looked like that when he was at work. I knew it all too well.
“Have you been meeting up with Atticus to do something recently?”
“I accompanied him to a dinner event, and we have an appointment for dinner today. He paid me for it, but nothing else.” I quickly tried to defend myself.
Were they suspecting me of something? However, I didn’t think Atticus would allow the pack to take such a huge risk and start a conflict with the humans.
“I think I should still tell you about it. Atticus has been attacked. We have yet to inform the Hil Pack about this. But, since you are too closely related to this matter, we have to bring you there.” He turned to look at me.
Did I have the right to refuse? It seemed that there was no such thing. I could only get into the car and follow him to a place I had never been to prove my innocence.
In the car, Soren was still looking at his computer. I could only sit beside him silently, pretending I didn’t exist.
“It looks like it happened during work hours,” he muttered softly.
“It looks like it.”
But he should have come to see me then.
As expected, I shouldn’t have trusted Atticus. How could a man like him tell me the truth? Maybe he never planned to have dinner with me or put me behind his work.
But no matter what, this was not strange at all.
After all, we were already going to be divorced.
“You don’t look too happy.” He looked at me.
How could that be? I couldn’t be happier. I subconsciously touched my cheeks, but they were wet.
“I wanted to say, if it’s possible, we…”
“But that’s impossible, isn’t it?” I interrupted him. I looked out the window and tried to change the topic.
“What hospital are we headed to?”
Soren nodded and opened the car door. I followed him.
A piece of news was being played on loop in the hospital. A werewolf was attacked in the city, and he was seriously injured.
I didn’t know if that was Atticus, but I felt there was a connection between them. Unfortunately, I only felt slightly more at ease when I saw Atticus again.
“I’ll go and handle the procedures first. Then, I’ll come back to find you later. But, before that, you can have a chat with him,” Soren reminded me.
I nodded and quickly entered the ward.
He was lying there, but he looked a little weak. There were wounds wrapped in gauze on his body. When he saw me, he struggled to sit up a little straighter.
“Eloise? I’m sorry I didn’t get to have dinner with you.”
“I thought you just wanted to stand me up.” I looked at him and muttered softly.
“I didn’t expect this to happen.”
“Do I look like that kind of person?” He raised his hand agitatedly. That action seemed to tug at his wound, making him gasp for breath.
No one wished for someone they knew to go through this. It didn’t matter even if I had that kind of relationship with Atticus.
“But why are you here… Did you come to see me?” He still seemed to be filled with some hope. But I was not willing to tell him any lies. It was immoral.
“No, I’m here as a witness.” I looked at him with a complicated expression. Unsurprisingly, his expression worsened.
I was only here because my human family asked me to.
Even if I didn’t understand the relationship between humans and werewolves, I knew this was a grave matter. If a werewolf Alpha suffered such serious injury in the human territory, it would be a serious disaster in the media.
This unexpectedly revealed the possible misunderstanding between Atticus and me. What a
coincidence..
