A Sorcerer's Journey - Chapter 575
Chapter 575: The Sevenfold Rainbow III
Three days later.
The cave was filled with stone pillars that were neatly lined up within the dim environment. Noises of creatures scurrying about could be heard from the ultrasonic sensors. A subterranean bat species dwelled within the cave.
Most creatures relied upon their sense of sight to see the world. The most conventional aspect of senses for the eyes would be light.
Even in the darkness of the cavern, since the principal law of the world coexisted with light, there was still a possibility that an object could be sensed by a highly-evolved super light-sensitive eye. The darkness of the cave did not mark the end in the evolution of light-sensing eyes.
Naturally, the super light-sensitive eyes would be blinded in a well-lit spot.
However, when the Darkness Pool has melded into darkness, absorbing all surrounding light, even the most light-sensitive eye would lose its function. This was significantly different from painted camouflage.
Grimm blended into the shadows. He stopped at the forest of stone pillars and did not dare to take another step forward.
The Darkness Pool was merely suited to absorbing light and hiding in the shadows. It would lose all its stealth properties if he were to face this creature that could detect sound waves.
Most importantly, Grimm could easily sense that there was an ancient creature beyond the forest of stone pillars that had the Evil Blood in its veins.
For Grimm, who had mastered the destructive spells, charging head-on with a Level-3 creature no longer fazed him. But if he could not secure an assured victory, or if he could not land a hit on his target, the damage of his destructive spell would not matter.
If there were a wiser option, Grimm would not have chosen a foolish strategy.
Furthermore, Grimm did not intend to battle and cast away the Level-3 creature. He was only interested in the Evil Blood within the ancient creature’s veins. For that, Grimm would have to slay it.
Soundwave detection?
As a Sorcerer equipped with the knowledge of the ultrasonic positioning sorcery, Grimm could sense from the sonar ahead that the creature merely had an ordinary level soundwave detection skill, nothing special.
Grimm suddenly tore open the Dimensional Gap and pulled out a piece of silk veil!
The silk veil was taken from a strange creature when Grimm explored the underground caverns of the Burrow World for the first time. The creature’s main body was hidden in a balloon-shaped furball. At the time, Grimm could sense that the creature could conceal itself from his ultrasonic positioning sorcery perfectly. However, it was still visible.
In the subterranean environment of the Burrow World, most creatures tend to evolve to be more sensitive to sound. Only a few creatures had evolved to be sensitive to light.
Normally, creatures within the same world would tend to evolve in the similar direction. A local or relatively isolated group of creatures would also have a propensity to evolve in a similar way, influenced by the laws of the world.
It was how a certain species of creature could thrive in the Burrow World.
The creature once ambushed the Little Myna’s Mud Mephit. In a spit of rage, Little Myna used his mystical power, his bird poop, to mark the creature. After that, Grimm managed to capture it with huge effort, and skinned its hide, which had the most research value.
Grimm named it… the Soundhide.
He had separated the fur from its leather.
The leather of the creature could conceal the presence of a creature, including its thermal signature.
Grimm saw this as a powerful surrogate in self-concealment sorcery. It was a pity that Grimm had limited knowledge about the sorcery. He had intended to study them but his time was taken up by the research into the Destructive Force. He kept the soundhide just in case.
Grimm had weaved a small part of its fur to create the sound-deflecting silk veil.
The sound-deflecting veil was one of the prized materials made by Grimm in preparation for the Robe of Representations. Its only use was to deflect detection by soundwave. This alone would be the nightmare of Soundwave Sorcerers and conventional creatures that relied upon the sense of sound!
For example… Hill Wood, who had passed on, Fake Faceless Nilmar, Big Ben Stigmata Sorcerer, and the stone bats in front!
The width of the silk veil was enough for Grimm to cover himself.
The fur from the soundhide had undergone a clever evolution. Like the outer metallic cover of Grimm’s Starfall Reconnaissance Craft, people from the outside had no way to detect what was inside. But one could clearly see everything outside from the inside. If not, Grimm would be caged in.
Grimm slowly flew into the forest of stone pillars.
As expected, the Bloodprint stone bats’ sonar passed through the outer layer of the Darkness Pool and glided right through the sound-deflecting veil. None of the soundwaves were reflected back. Grimm had created the perfect disguise in the realm of soundwaves!
“Hehehe, I’m really looking forward to the Robe of Representations!”
Like before, Grimm blended in the shadows and moved quietly in the stone pillar forest. He was still chasing the faint smell of Evil Blood ahead.
A little bit over half an hourglass later.
Compared to the newer breed of Bloodprint stone bats that were only centimeters long, this was a two-meter-over large stone bat. Its grey skin was like a rock. It was sleeping upside-down on top of a stone pillar while its two huge wings covered its body. The bat was unaware of Grimm’s approach.
“Twelve meters, it’s within the range of my arc of destruction.”
He showed an expression that was unaffected by desire.
Quietly, Grimm pulled out his Sabbatic Goat Staff and pointed at the ancient stone bat’s head that was nearer to the ground compared to the rest of its body.
Crackle!
The black arc melded into the darkness. The discharge was headed toward the sleeping stone bat.
As the destructive spell was cast, the stone bat instinctively flapped its wing to cover itself while trying to escape from the harrowing and deadly attack.
“The ambush is still not perfect.”
The stone bat’s instinctive awareness was partly due to the light distortion from the arc discharge of the destructive spell. On the other hand, the energy produced quite a ripple in the air as well. Lastly, Grimm could not conceal the deadly presence of danger at all.
But even if the bat was alerted, it was too late.
Boom!
A crisp noise echoed throughout the stone caverns. It sounded heavy at the same time, like a block of stone that had been dropped into the water.
The destructive arc had easily pierced through the defense of the stone bat’s prized wings and blew its right brains off. After an explosion, the stone pillar where the bat was hanging from was also destroyed by the blast.
But due to the nature of the destructive spells, it did not create a wide area of destruction. The Destructive Forces were neatly concentrated at a specific area.
Rumble!
The collapsing stone pillar, as well as the terrifying amount of energy ripples, instantly produced chaos within the cavern. Tens of thousands of stone bats flapped their wings and flew out after being frightened.
Plop!
It was a one-hit-kill. The carcass of the headless Level-3 ancient stone bat fell to the ground. There was a half-meter radius hole on its wing. The edge was smooth and the flesh within had vanished completely.
“Success.”
Grimm teleported to the side of the carcass. He took out a new crystal vial and started to locate and collect the Evil Blood within the stone bat.
Another hundred Sorcerer Essences were now in his hand.
