A Clash of Gods - Chapter 30
Chapter 30 Double Pupil
The fat man in gray robe obviously thought that his shout would certainly threaten those people outside to stop shooting arrows. But he did not expect that after his shout, the arrows were fired more fiercely.
The flying arrows whizzed through the entrance and the windows, so everyone was forced to sink their heads.
Yang Ning was very puzzled, thinking that those people outside should come to capture the spies from the Northern Han State and their purpose was of course the hostage kidnapped by them.
Normally, those people outside should hesitate to take actions and wouldn’t be so aggressive because the hostage was in the hands of the spies. But now those people didn’t seem to care about the life of the hostage.
The fat man in gray robe was very angry and shouted loudly, “If you don’t stop, I will kill him with my sword.”
When he just finished his words, with the sound of “Bang”, a figure came in from the window. That man was agile and waved his sword at those men hiding under the windows. With several consecutive sounds of “Bang”, many people came in one after another, and without saying any word, they all chopped at the spies once they found them.
The arrows like locusts stopped now. But those people from outside had rushed into the ancestral temple by dint of the flying arrows.
The spies from the Northern Han State in the ancestral temple also waved their swords to fight against their opponents. For a time, the two parties were locked in a bloodthirsty fight.
Yang Ning was surprised, and felt that Xiao Guang pulled his clothes. He turned his head, finding that Xiao Guang raised his hand and pointed to a place ahead. Yang Ning’s eyes followed his direction, and saw a hole not far away on the dilapidated wall in the corner.
Yang Ning immediately took Xiao Guang’s hint.
Although the two parties were now fighting against each other in the ancestral temple, sooner or later they would find that he and Xiao Guang were hiding behind the stone altar. Both of the two gangs were not to be trifled with, so the best choice was to leave this place in chaos before they had found them.
Heart-rending screams could be heard all the time, and the sounds of crying also sounded now and then.
They had no time to lose. Yang Ning was decisive. He made a wink at Xiao Guang and lay prone on the ground, creeping towards the corner. Seeing Yang Ning’s move, Xiao Guang was startled and then frowned. But he also knew that this was the best way to avoid being noticed, so he prone on the ground, imitating Yang Ning to creep over there.
Then they heard the fat man in gray robe said in a deep voice, “Who are you? Don’t you want to save him?”
However, both parties were fighting in high spirits at this time, so nobody took notice of him. There were seven or eight people under the man in gray robe, but now three or four of them had been killed in succession. Two men of the other party also had been killed.
Yang Ning crawled to the corner and reached out his hand to move the debris in front of the hole. Xiao Guang also helped him. When the hole was spacious enough for one person to get through, Yang Ning hinted that Xiao Guang got out first. Xiao Guang didn’t hesitate and crept out of the hole, and Yang Ning followed him.
As soon as they passed through the hole, they found that there was an open field behind the ancestral temple. There was a wood not far away. They didn’t stop to enjoy the excitement of getting out of the ancestral temple, but got up and ran over to the wood quickly.
“Ouch!”
Yang Ning heard Xiao Guang made a yell, and looked back, only to see that Xiao Guang had fallen to the ground and was shot in the leg with an arrow.
Hit by a shock, Yang Ning looked up and saw four or five people suddenly appeared almost behind him .Two of them were holding bows and arrows and the other three were holding broadswords, rushing to chase after them.
“Go… Hurry up!” Xiao Guang looked up at Yang Ning, and his face was pale. “Just go… Leave me here…”
Without saying anything, Yang Ning stepped forward to carry Xiao Guang on his back and scolded, “Xiao Guang, you really are a jinx. Since I saved you, I have been hunted along the way. That’s fucking rotten luck.” He swore, but still carried Xiao Guang on his back and ran over to the wood.
Behind him, several arrows were shot, so Yang Ning didn’t run in a straight line. Maybe he was nimble or maybe the archers’ archery was poor, so these arrows were all avoided by Yang Ning.
“Be careful…” Xiao Guang called out, “There is danger ahead!”
Yang Ning was originally carrying Xiao Guang and running forward with his head down. Hearing Xiao Guang’s shout, he looked up and saw three men holding broadswords ahead. His heart sank. He stopped and looked back, only to see that the people behind him had already caught up. He was really in a fix.
Yang Ning took a deep breath. Xiao Guang was no longer nervous, but his eyes were filled with anger.
“Xiao Guang. Now I know…” Yang Ning smiled bitterly, “They are not coming for the spies of the Northern Han State, but…for killing you.”
“It seems so,” Xiao Guang clenched his teeth and said, “Those spies of the Northern Han State just fell on an evil day. By the way, what’s your name? I don’t want to die before knowing your name.”
Yang Ning said grumpily, “Don’t talk so much nonsense. You have to remember that you owe me five hundred pieces of gold. Even if you are dead, you can’t repudiate this debt.”
At this moment, several people had already run toward them from both front and back sides. A man waved his broadsword and chopped head-on at Yang Ning. His attack was quick and neat.
Yang Ning knew that there was no other way to deal with them except for the Easy Travel.
Once he walked the steps of the Easy Travel, his moves would become mysterious and unpredictable. Even if masters like the God of Wood couldn’t find the law of its paces. Yang Ning also knew that if he only faced one or two persons, he might avoid the opponent’s attacks easily with the Easy Travel. However, seven or eight people had gathered around him, so it was really difficult for him to cope with them.
Yang Ning didn’t think too much when that man chopped at him. He just took the first step of the Easy Travel, and successfully avoided his blow. He didn’t care whether that man chopped at him again, and simply took the second step.
At this moment, a man behind him also made a slash towards him with a broadsword, but Yang Ning evaded it lightly.
The five swordsmen besieged Yang Ning and Xiao Guang, and they all launched attacks without hesitation. Their moves were extremely fierce, leaving no room for them to respond at all. Obviously, they wanted to kill them.
Xiao Guang thought that they would definitely die, but he didn’t expect that when their opponents chopped at them in a row, Yang Ning could evade their attacks from all directions like a ghost. When the opponents’ broadswords seemed to cut them, Yang Ning escaped with strange moves and sometimes he even brushed with the killers.
“Be careful…” A glimpse of two blows from both right and left sides made Xiao Guang scream. But Yang Ning retreated backwards, and had a narrow escape. With the sound of “Bang”, two broadswords knocked against each other with sparks flying in all directions.
In the distance, the two archers put the arrows on their bows, and intended to shoot Yang Ning. But Yang Ning was on the left one moment and on the right the next, so the two archers couldn’t aim at him for a while. They tried to aim at him precisely, but never dared to shoot for fear of hurting their companions.
These swordsmen made their waves continuously from different directions, but each time they narrowly missed their target, so they looked quite awkward for a while. They all showed a surprised look, but indeed they were filled with much more anger.
Although Yang Ning had evaded their moves in succession, he had to follow the steps of the Easy Travel from beginning to end and dared not to make any mistake. That’s the reason why these men couldn’t hurt him and why he couldn’t break through their encirclement. These swordsmen were also extremely agile, because when they had failed to cut them, they would change their positions quickly and besieged Yang Ning and Xiao Guang again.
Yang Ning practiced the steps of the Easy Travel only for a short time, so even if he was very familiar with its paces, he only grasped its forms and was yet to fully comprehend its spirits.
Although he was quite proficient in walking the steps of the Easy Travel, his movements were extremely unpleasant to eyes, without elegant bearing. In addition, he even carried Xiao Guang on his back, so he looked quite awkward.
Suddenly he saw that over ten people came over from the ancestral temple with broadswords or bows and arrows in their hands. They didn’t rush forward, but watch this fight in the distance. It turned out that they found it quite interesting to watch these five swordsmen attack Yang Ning.
Xiao Guang knew it and became more grim-faced.
He was very clear that these people were very confident, and it was indeed true. Although Yang Ning could temporarily cope with them with ease by his strange steps, he could only move in a small circle. There were more than twenty people in the other party and they had besieged them, so Yang Ning couldn’t hold out for a long time.
When Yang Ning was exhausted, it would be as easy as cutting up vegetables for the other party to kill them.
And that was what Yang Ning thought now. He had walked for a long time, but he always felt that there were many figures around him with overbearing flash of broadswords. He knew that if this situation continued, he would die from exhaustion before being killed by the other party.
When he had walked a full set of steps, he started again from the beginning. Yang Ning paused for a while and was about to set his foot again, only to see a dazzling glint before his eyes. It turned out to be a head-on chop.
Yang Ning was stunned and took a step back subconsciously. However, this step was completely different from the first step of the Easy Travel. And when he wanted to begin again, there was a blow on his side. Xiao Guang also felt that something was wrong, and his voice was out of tone, “Be careful. On the left…”
Yang Ning was annoyed, thinking that Xiao Guang’s fucking shout only made him more flustered. He had barely ducked the blow when there was a slash from his back again.
Suddenly, he heard the sound of “Bang” and then the sound of “Whiz”, which was followed by two screams. Yang Ning hadn’t figured out what had happened before he heard the sound of exclamation not far away.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw the two swordsmen beside him fell to the ground at the same time.
Yang Ning was surprised first and then overjoyed. He took the opportunity to dodge aside and instantly found his rhythm again. He walked the steps of the Easy Travel. But this time, without the glint and flash of pressing broadswords, he moved to the side and kept a distance from these men.
After he had pulled away, he found that these swordsmen did not dog him. He felt strange, and wondered why the two men fell for no reason. He glanced at them, only to find that both of them were shot by arrows in the neck. The arrows penetrated their back of the head, and took their life instantly.
Yang Ning took a step, stopped, and swept his eyes over the crowd. He saw that the swordsmen and archers all looked in one direction. Yang Ning followed their gaze, only to find that a few steps from him there was a man and a horse, like ghosts. He didn’t notice when they appeared.
The man was riding on the horse, but he looked burly and strong. He was not a ghost. His bushy beard extended from his cheeks to the periphery of his mouth, covering half of his face.
Although he had a bushy beard and half of his face was covered, he made people terrified with a glance. The man was not far from Yang Ning, and Yang Ning had good eyesight. He was surprised to find that the man’s eyes were very strange because each of his eyes seemed to have a double pupil.
