A Clash of Gods - Chapter 146
Chapter 146 The Ready-made Panacea
Hurried footsteps came from outside suddenly, and even a sobbing voice was heard. “Doctor, Doctor Song, please save my child…”
All people looked in the direction where the voice was and saw that several people rushed in. The one in the front was a big man in his early thirties, and three or four people followed him. One of them was a woman wearing a dress made of coarse cloth. Her face was covered with tears and she was extremely grieved.
Yang Ning saw that the big man held a child in his arms, who was covered with a rough blanket. They couldn’t tell how old the child was. The big man had tears in his eyes and asked as soon as he entered the room, “Who is Doctor Song?”
Mr. Song stepped forward at once and asked, “I am. What’s wrong?”
The big man begged in a trembling voice, “Doctor Song, please, save my child. He…”
Mr. Song reached out his hand and lifted the blanket. After he glanced at the patient, he shouted in a low voice. Yang Ning was next to him and saw that the child in the big man’s arms was only five or six years old, and half of his face was red and swollen. He had a convulsion in the big man’s arms.
“Was burning oil poured to him?” Doctor Huang also moved close to him and took a glance. He frowned. “There are blisters on the half side from the head to the shoulder, and the skin is burnt. It’s caused by burning oil.”
The big man said, “We didn’t take good care of him. The child pulled the hot oil pot down from the stove, and it was poured down from his head. Doctor, please save him now…” The people behind him were his family members obviously, and all of them cried, “Doctor Song, you have superb medical skills. Please check on him.”
Doctor Song looked serious. “Put him down in the inner room.” He turned around and walked to the back hall. The big man hurriedly followed him with the child in his arms. Doctor Huang and the others didn’t follow them in. This was a rule in this field. When a doctor treated a patient, it was his privacy. Without permission, they couldn’t watch aside.
The family members also wanted to follow them in, while Duan Canghai stopped them. “All of you, don’t be anxious. Mr. Song is treating him now. Wait a moment here. Don’t disturb him.”
Yang Ning came to behind the screen and saw that there was a wooden bed. The child was put on the bed, and Doctor Song reached out his hand to put it on the child’s pulse, while the big man was quite worried.
Tang Nuo stood next to Yang Ning and wanted to see clearly seemingly. Seeing that the boy was twitching and Doctor Song was still checking his pulse, she frowned and shook her head. “It’s not right.”
It was quiet in the room, and Tang Nuo said that directly, so Mr. Song heard it clearly. He suddenly turned his head and asked with a frown, “Miss Tang, what did you say?”
Tang Nuo didn’t care about Mr. Song’s expression. “This child was burnt by burning oil. Now you need to treat the scald and it is easy to be infected again. If you delay one minute, he would be more dangerous. You don’t need to check his pulse now.”
Mr. Song was stunned and then anger was shown in his eyes. He sneered and asked, “Miss Tang, what do you think I should do?”
After all, he was a doctor presiding over the Yong’an Hall. Since the family of the Marquis of Honor hired him to work, he was certainly capable of the art of healing.
From the beginning, he disdained Tang Nuo. If he didn’t consider the feelings of the marquis’ heir, he wouldn’t be polite to Tang Nuo, but this young woman said in public that he wasted time on checking the pulse, so he was certainly furious. If Yang Ning was not present, Doctor Song might explode on the spot.
Tang Nuo didn’t care about Mr. Song’s anger seemingly. “There must be trifolium in the pharmacy. Mix some trifolium with water to clean the burnt part immediately and then apply the vulnerary medicine. He was burnt not long ago, and if he is cured quickly, no scars would be left, but if you deal with it in a wrong way, perhaps it would give rise to the unwanted aftermath and scars would be left.”
Mr. Song frowned and stated in a deep voice, “The child was burnt by burning oil and his condition is unknown. How can we not check the pulse first? The pharmacy is next door, and we can bring the trifolium you mentioned at any time. However, if we use the medicine arbitrarily before confirming the symptom, the consequence can’t be imagined. When we treat patients, it is a matter of life and death, so we can’t be careless. Moreover, the trifolium you mentioned is not the herb to cure the scald.”
Tang Nuo responded, “The trifolium is not to cure the scald but can drive away poison. The people living in the wild like to store some trifolium in the room in order to keep the poisonous insects, mice and ants away. I said you need to not only cure the scald but also prevent it from being infected. If you use the water with trifolium to clean up the burnt parts, it can relieve his pain and also prevent the scald from being infected.”
“Which itinerant doctor told you?” Mr. Song didn’t think so and retorted indifferently, “I have treated patients for many years and seen countless medicinal materials. The trifolium is the commonest herb, and you can find it everywhere in the wild. It is the cheapest. When we make medicine, we seldom use it. I have never heard that it can drive away poison.”
Tang Nuo didn’t argue anymore. She came to the Yong’an Hall this time and brought her own small medical kit. At the moment, she turned around and put the medical kit on the table next to her. Then she opened it and took out two silver needles briskly. Under all people’s watchful eyes, she walked over and stabbed the child’s shoulder with one needle and the part between his eyes and brows with the other.
Mr. Song saw that she stabbed neatly and skillfully like an expert. Although he had an average skill in the acupuncture treatment, he could see that Tang Nuo was superb in this skill, so he was not so furious anymore and asked with a frown, “Miss Tang, are you…”
“It can relieve the child’s pain and slow down the blood pressing the heart and lung, so there will be no other accidents,” Tang Nuo explained simply.
Seeing that after Tang Nuo treated the patient with needles, she stepped aside and didn’t say anything, Mr. Song hesitated for a while and then withdrew his hand which checked the child’s pulse. Then he asked, “Miss Tang, do you think that we should wash his scald with the trifolium water first?”
Tang Nuo nodded slightly and didn’t speak.
Mr. Song pondered for a moment and then stated, “In this case, I will have a try with your method.” He spoke to the big man. “Go to the next room and tell them to bring a basin of water with trifolium in it as soon as possible.”
The big man quickly went away.
Yang Ning thought that these two people had a conflict on the first day, and how would they get along in the future?
Mr. Song was a doctor sitting in the Yong’an Hall, and anybody would be unhappy when he was commented on in public.
Obviously, facing a disease, Tang Nuo didn’t care about others’ dignity and just thought about how to cure it at first.
In fact, he was clear that Mr. Song had been a doctor for much longer than Tang Nuo, but as for something, they might not be more outstanding because they had worked for longer.
He knew that Tang Nuo had awesome medical skills, while Mr. Song must be much inferior to her.
Generally, the really brilliants doctors with excellent skills who could bring a patient back to life would be employed by the high officials or noblemen. Such doctors would ask for a high price when they treated patients and didn’t worry about money. They were famous and didn’t fear that nobody asked them to treat patients, so they seldom sat in clinics.
How would the one who could be employed with a high payment be so free as to sit in the clinic and wait for the patients to come every day?
If he had time, it was better to study medical books and make some medicine with herbs.
The doctors presiding the clinic could diagnose some common diseases, but a lot of them would be at a loss when they met the real incurable diseases.
Yang Ning knew that Mr. Song was willing to have a try with the method Tang Nuo mentioned must because he found that she was good at acupuncture treatment, but this old doctor wouldn’t be convinced just because she knew the acupuncture. Tang Nuo needed to show her unique skill to make him admire her.
The big man went to the pharmacy next door and soon brought a basin of water, with dozens of purple branches of dry grass floating in it. Yang Ning had never seen it but understood that it must be the trifolium as Tang Nuo said.
Seeing that the big man brought water into the room, Mr. Song didn’t hurry up but raised his hand in front of Tang Nuo. “Miss Tang, how about you have a try? I have never tried your method and don’t know how to do it.”
Yang Ning frowned slightly and knew that Mr. Song was angry and intentionally made things difficult for Tang Nuo.
The patient was next to them, yet Mr. Song still wanted to vent his anger, which made Yang Ning look down upon him, while Tang Nuo didn’t hesitate to walk forward. Under the gaze of all people, she washed the child’s scald and then got up, taking out a porcelain bottle from her medical kit. She opened the bottle and poured some light yellow powder out of it to the child’s scald. She poured it to several parts and then reached out her hand to press his pulse.
Mr. Song furrowed his brows and couldn’t help but ask, “Miss Tang, what’s in this bottle? Are you sure that you can use this medicinal powder?”
Without looking at Mr. Song, Miss Tang reached out her hand and pressed the boy’s precordium, saying, “I made this medicinal powder myself. If there is no accident, at this hour tomorrow, which is within twenty-four hours, the boy’s scald would be healed and no scars would be left.”
“How is it possible?” Mr. Song laughed in an instant. “Miss Tang, is this panacea? Can it be so effective? Not to mention that he was burnt by hot oil, even if the scald was caused by burning water, he can’t be healed within one day even with the best medicinal material.” He raised his hand and stroked his beard. “In this field, anything may happen, so you can’t say it firmly.”
Tang Nuo was neither conceited nor rash. “This is the commonest medicant to cure injuries, and I have used it many times. There is no problem.” Seeing that the big man who brought the boy was looking at her in a daze, she said to him, “Let him have a rest for one hour here. After one hour, the medicant would enter his skin and flesh. Keep his scald away from water within twenty-four hours, and he will be fine then.”
She spoke in a calm tone, and nobody would doubt her.
The big man expressed gratefully, “Thanks, Lady. Thanks. If he recovers tomorrow, I will bring all my family to thank you.”
However, Yang Ning stared at the porcelain bottle in Tang Nuo’s hand and moved close to her. He swallowed and asked, “Miss Tang, this…Is this expensive?”
Tang Nuo responded, “It’s quite common. And it’s not difficult to make it. What’s up? Do you like it?”
“If it is so magical, not only I like it.” Yang Ning’s eyes lit up. “I am sure that all people in the world like it, as it is really a necessary treasure when you are at home or traveling.
